I've got a beard. A four monther. I quite liked it, it's a bit like having a pet strapped to the underside of your chin. But now it's got bushy and 'things' get trapped in it. Nothing unusual - Food, sparrows, small children. That sort of thing. Also the moustache hairs tend to interfere with one's eating. Blancmange, eggs especially a problem. Shall I shave the whacker off or take defensive measures - trimmage, etc. what would a gentleman do?

never use clippers to trim your beard, always use scissors to shape and trim, and one should use an oil to moisturise the hair to stop it ending up like a 1970' muff.

Chaps, this is a watch forum. Just comb it, go for the whole "operator" look and get a Navy Seals watch. If you're loaded, you can get the JLC, but a Luminox will suffice too.

Davide, you need to get yourself to a barber for the first trim and get his advice on the best way to keep it in check. He should also be able to suggest the best trimmer to use and which number adapter-thingie to use where.

Use plenty of conditioner to soften it up then use any old hair wax to shape it. If your looking for a specific beard oil I recommend

I get mine shaped once a month and use beard oil most days to keep it looking good, otherwise you look like a hobo!
A trim with scissors around the lips should stop you eating your beard!
The reference was to all male RN personnel not being allowed solely a moustache or a beard, but having to grow a full set. I don't think that the regulations distinguish between officers and ratings, but I accept that officers may be subject to slightly different standards of enforcement and that the untrimmed extravagance shown in the picture would meet not be allowed nowadays. Specifically, this is what the regs now say:

I alternate between little more than designer stubble and full on tramp (closer to the latter at the moment) as I have for the last 30 years. Aside from my mother everyone agrees I look better with one and it saves me 5 minutes each morning.

No, I didn't...but I'm used to children having this sort of reaction:
I sported a beard a few years back. I had a moustache comb and would trim the bottom of the 'tash to avoid collecting snacks.
But since then I have discovered the joy of straight razors. If it's good enough for James Bond...
Quick tip for the oiling (which is a daily essential) - Moroccan Oil for the lovely ladies' shiny locks is far better than any of the gentleman's beard preparations.
It's available from the kind of ladies salons where they have One Direction videos playing on the walls...
Also, I have yet to find any clippers which will leave you with any decent length.
Scissors and a comb as a guide are the only way imo.
As above been around 45 yrs in my case and when I shower (daily) or wash my face it gets washed I use a trimmer and also shave my throat (sometimes) and what is with this oil etc ? we are MEN

Beard oil? Why is this required? Surely my own oil, and not over-shampoo-ing (say, every other day??)
And why not clippers - surely they are two bits of metal than cut a hair, same as scissors?
I am about 10 weeks in, but have pretty luxurious growth and am mostly avoiding the "just woke up under a hedge" look.
I've found I do brush it, daily, whereas I haven't brushed my hair for years. Not sure if that is helping me stay kempt?
One thing - I have jet black hair and a good Celtic Red beard. Seems to start at a clear line where sidey becomes beard - makes me look like I dye my hair! Reverts back to black from the neck down....! What's happening here?

Yes - they are trendy now, but only looks like you're trying to hard if you dress like you work in a skate shop or an independent Cinema. This will pass, the beard will remain and we will no longer seem like try-to-hard boho hipster eegits.
And poo in your beard? What, you'd rather have it sat on your beardless skin around your mouth? The poo in the beard gets there from the inside heading out - from the pseudo-sciencists talking sh*t!
