No, Judi Dench as M was the worst thing--glad she was killed off in Skyfall. M is there to send Bond off on missions and give him a kick up the backside halfway through the film to get the story moving along again. He/she shouldn't be central to the story and saving him/her shouldn't be the reason Bond ends up in jeopardy. Stopping a villian that wants to take over the world via diabolical means is a good reason for Bond to go off on a mission, protecting Judi Dench is not.
That's my own personal little bugbear about Skyfall and The World is Not Enough, which otherwise were (and still are, really) cracking Bond films. Judi Dench is a great actress and I understand the temptation for wanting to her use more in the films, but I'd rather they cast credible, decent actresses as the Bond girls, seeing as they usually take up more screen time and are meaninful to the plot (sometimes). Halle Berry was the last decent actress in that role, I'd say.

Form the "classic" bonds, i.e ones I watched on TV when I was a kid it would be you only live twice or goldfinger. To me Sean Connery was Bond, never liked Roger Moore, particularly his later ones when he just seemed like a sleezy old man.
As an opening sequence and credits I'd have to go for "die another day" - I think it's fantastic and it's a great film, Brosnan is known as "mama Mia Bond" in our house as my daughters saw that film first.
Casino Royal is the best bond film though, made me read the books (if you haven't read them you should)
OHMSS although I like most of them.
The ending always gives me a lump in my throat.

Certainly some of Moore's films took the gadgets too far- e.g. Moonraker was woeful. The Bourne influence is not all bad, but Bond should still feel British and not a knock off of Hollywood blockbusters.

I heard that for Skyfall, there were discussions about getting Sean Connery out of retirement to play Kincade the gamekeeper (ultimately played by Albert Finney). Apparently they gave up on the idea because it would be "too confusing" (although I suspect Sean Connery's advancing years would be an issue too). Personally, I think I could have handled the confusion...
Anyway, favourite Bond films: It's a controversial one, but I'm a big fan of OHMSS - it's generally written off, what with Lazenby, but everything else about it is fantastic. That said, you really can't beat the Connery ones. Ever notice that in Doctor No, most of what happens actually involves Bond screwing up?
Like Sean I have a problem with Skyfall... I can't actually pin it down but there's something I just don't like ... and I love Bond films I just didn't like it....
All Bond films have plot holes of course so it's not just that..,but it did seem to end up as home alone... And wasn't just that they destroyed the DB5 which was sacrilege and unnecessary .....
I read a summary of plot problems which was interesting I'll see if I can find it again.....
For me though...
Dr No.... Honey rider...in that bikini coming out of water... Underneath the mango tree ....

I think the older bond films (prior to Daniel Craig) had just become comedies and had drifted so far too from the books Bond.
Craig has brought back a much more accurate interpretation of Flemming's Bond which, for me, is a good thing.
Casino Royale.
Because how can you not like a movie with David Niven and Peter Sellers.

skyfall is an excellent bond film ,the best in last 15 years imo
but classic bond film would be goldfinger,the whole thing encapsulates all the good cheesey things about bond films

For Your Eyes Only - mainly because I had a massive crush on Carole Bouquet ;-)
Thunderball - Nassau really was paradise back then, DB5, Connery at his peak and a great feast of Bond Girls (the best assortment in one movie)
Casino Royale - like somebody else said, the intro is pretty vicious action wise for Bond and really did make me sit up in the cinema and think Bond is back and kicking arse!
OHMSS - Great film, follows the book very close, and Lazenby is underrated in my opinion
Interesting comment and not the only one of this thought on here too; I also agree partly....although it is against my very soul to say ANYTHING less than great about Bond. For me, it is the unravelling of his past that doesn't sit right. My Bond lives in the here and now and doesn't dwell on these things-there are no loose ends to tie up. Sadly, it appears there are more allusions to this type of thing in the new trailer for Spectre............ I'm sure we'll all love it regardless!

For me it's Casino Royale:
1) Chris Cornell's fever pitched theme song
2) Eva Green (she just does it for me)
3) "Shaken or stirred?" "Do I look like I give a damn?"
4) The fight scene in the restroom. One of the most realistic fight/kill sequences I've ever seen in the cinema.
Runner up, You Only Live Twice:
1) Beautiful melody in the theme song. I sometimes find myself whistling it at odd times. Very memorable.
2) Kissy Suzuki.
3) That one-of-a-kind Toyota 2000GT. One of the neatest believable cars that has ever graced a Bond film.
All of them to be honest, each in their own way. Even the Roger Moore ones.
Some were camp, some were over-gadgetted, all have good points and bad. But they were all enjoyable to some extent for me.
Daniel Craig's 'Casino Royale' was a pleasing reboot for me. I agree with TakesALickin's likes list for it.
'Quantum of Solace' was one of the most disappointing Bond films for me. I felt it lost a lot of the reboot flavour and the photography (should that be cinematography?) felt too cramped for me in action scenes: It seemed to focus on close ups too much, thus making it difficult to follow the action. I'd say I still enjoyed it but not as much as I might have hoped.
'Skyfall' was fantastic though... better cinematography in my opinion, a better fit with the reboot world, satisfying. But...
But: 'Skyfall' had some stupid plot holes. Ok, all movies like this are going to have plot holes but the whole idea of kidnapping M to protect her and then still letting her get killed and this being all ok is crazy. Bond's career would have been dead right then and there, MI6 would have been absurdly discredited, and the entire point of kidnapping M would have been destroyed. Furthermore, kidnapping M to protect her and then going to a remote manor house where it was certain they would be outnumbered by their enemy was also foolish. Going to a remote location might have been sensible but only so that the Army could be brought in to provide protection, putting superior forces on the side of MI6. The fact that the baddie was also finally killed would not have saved Bond or MI6 in such a scenario. Nevertheless, ignoring the glaring plot holes, the hand over of Dench M to Voldemort M was pleasing and hopefully this reboot of a reboot will be followed by more in the same vein.

I still have my original model Lotus Esprit though from TSWLM...
The rewrite was part of that critique .... the DB5 won in the card game then sprouted goldfinger gadgets as one example....but I don't know the writing grated on me...somehow.... and markR is absolutely right with the home alone scenario .. Yes it's Bond but there are many other plotholes too...

I liked the Bond films when they were more silly. Roger Moores eyebrows, sharks with frikkin laser beams on their heads, exploding rocket launching tie pins and the sort.
I'll go with Licence to Kill. Was the first 15 rated Bond. I had a cinematic theme song, a 'proper' Aston Martin V8 vantage, two smoking foxes with actual roles, a truly deranged baddie, and most importantly throughout the whole thing Timothy Dalton is taking names!!!!
With the new gritty style stuff I genuinely think nobody does it better than Bourne (see what I did there).
Ah yes, that was weird. On the one hand I liked it: The nod to the past in a reboot (of a reboot) was fun. But it made no sense no matter how you looked at it.
Should we take it that today's Bond knows where the gadgets of a previous incarnation of Bond are stashed? An in-movie nod that it's all not real (gasp!)?
Was J. J. Abrams actually directing and so this Bond is in an alternative reboot reboot timeline? Sean Connery making a Spock-style cameo would almost have made sense in that case[1]. ;-)
Oh well... despite the holes I still found it greatly enjoyable. But yes, the plot holes did annoy at some level.
Shall we list other Skyfall plot holes? There have got to be more.

Haha, excellent! I'm glad they agreed with me about going off to the middle of nowhere without extra protection. Lots of other stuff too. And yes, I thought that Bond's survival was absurd but, then again, that's part of the charm of 007: No matter, he always survives somehow.
