Goldfinger.
Best Bond, best car, best storyline, best henchman. Win.
Chatting with a buddy earlier, we somehow got on to the subject of Bond films, which we preferred, and why. Needless to say, we couldn't agree.
I went for The Spy Who Loved Me, mainly due to the Sub-Aqua Esprit (Wet Nellie) - forgive me, I was only 10 years old when it came out, and it seemed the epitome of cool... Barbara Bach with her Russian accent didn't hurt either.
He opted for Goldfinger, citing the DB5, Oddjob and "No Mr Bond, I expect you to die"..
So, in one sentence if possible, what's your favourite Bond film, and why? It could be the gadget, the car, the girl, the one-liner, the theme song - something else?
Mike
Goldfinger.
Best Bond, best car, best storyline, best henchman. Win.
With you on TSWLM.
70s cool, Rog at his smirking finest, and breasty Agent XXX
Has to be 'Live and let die' for two main reasons.
1) it's Roger Moore at his utter hammiest as bond.
2)Voodoo magic.
i prefer the Daniel Craig movies but for me Bond movies are a different beast to what they used to be. They're serious movies now but previous iterations were always a bit more tongue in cheek (up to Craig).
When i was a kid i would say A View To A Kill, first time i really thought it became modern plotting to wipe out Silicon Valley.
But now it has to be Skyfall, very gritty...
Thunderball is my fav., i suppose basically because it was my favourite Bond book and translated well to the screen.
From Russia with Love. Gypsy belly dancer, Rosa Klebb and proper acting and great train fight scene with the brilliant Robert Shaw.
Gold finger. DB5. Ejector seat (and other gadgets)
Daniel Craig's Casino Royale, or maybe Skyfall.
My parents didn't let me watch Bond movies when I was a kid, so I had to experience my Bonds as books. Thus my impression of what Bond should be is based on Ian Fleming's writing, not the movies. Daniel Craig is easily closest to my personal image of Bond.
Goldfinger
DB5 with gadgets, narrowly avoided laser beam groin injury, Tania Mallet
From Russia With Love. Connery as Bond and Kerim Bay - a great supporting character played by Pedro Armendariz. Also very little in the way of gadgets and if I remember correctly follows the book quite closely.

Best:- goldfinger. Connery, Db5, gert frobe, pussy galore, Oddjob, Shirley bassey.
My favourite:- the man with the golden gun. Roger moore, Christopher lee, Britt Ekland, tee-hee, lulu theme song.....
I thoroughly recommend Roger Moores book "my word is my bond" as he is so conscious of the fact that he wasn't a very good actor, and how lucky he was to have been so successful. He comes across (always) as being extremely grateful for his career and popularity. His humility is quite refreshing when there are literally people famous for being famous!

I think Roger Moore was very good as the Saint, but too far from my idea of Bond.
Goldfinger.
Simply a great story. Moving around the world between Miami, England, Switzerland, Kentucky.
Shirley Eaton painted gold.
The golf game.
Brilliant villain in Goldfinger with his henchman Oddjob.
DB5
Fort Knox.
Pussy Galore.
Cheers,
Neil.
Thunderball.
The intro sequence with the jet pack
One of Connery's best performances with some great lines
Good story, ridiculous ending ;)
Casino Royale or Quantum of Solace. The oil can in the desert was a quaint touch.
From Russia With Love
1) My favourite Bond villain - Donald 'Red' Grant. Cold, brutal, psychotic killer played by Robert Shaw, the only person (in my opinion) with stage presence to rival Sean Connery
2) Swaine Adeney Brigg suitcase with proper, believable gadgets for the period
3) Great supporting cast - Karim Bey and Rosa Klebb characters in particular
4) Aston Martin makes an appearance :)
5) The final fight sequence on the train (read the Fleming novel - it's miles more bloody)
6) Bond shooting the helicopter down - no weird gadgets to do this but a proper rifle
Skyfall.
Great track from Adele, a return to the witty quips, half way decent storyline, and some epic scenery. I have it on bluray and stick it on from time to time when I don't want anything too challenging to watch.
In no order of preference
Casino Royal DC
From Russia with Love SC
Goldfinger SC
Skyfall DC
OHMSC GL
Having read the Ian Fleming novels many times the films I've enjoyed the most appear to have followed the books formula quite closely, the gadgets when they appear aren't over the top and don't dominate the scene, the fight scenes are often gritty and ruthless, in other words they are as believable as is possible without the over use of CGI or gimmicks.

It would have to be 'The Spy Who Loved Me'. It's got everything you want from a Bond film (beautiful girls, that Lotus scene, sharks) plus it's the only one where Moore comes close to engaging in convincing acting. Also, he is young enough to pull the role off, unlike the later ones. I grew up in Moore Bond era so it has masive nostalgic value but having revisited the Moore years, 'TSWLM' is the only one that doesn't disappoint.
Honourable nod to 'Casino Royale' redux - takes Bond into a whole other league IMO but ultimately, nostalgia wins out for me.
On Her Majesty's secret service, the only time I can remember where Bond genuinely looked in danger and vulnerable, also showed us a different previously unseen side to the character.
The Spy who loved me, as a child I loved this film and still have a soft spot for it now, Barbara Bach who I had a massive crush on, Jaws who was terrifying and Roger More at his suave best, and the parachute / ski chase scene was spectacular as was the Esprit.
Casino Royale, one of my favourite films, let alone Bond movies.
I felt rather let down by Octopussy however, which it transpired wasn't about a woman with 8 vaginas at all. Sorry....shamelessly stolen, I really can't remember from where though.
"Thunderball" - I loved all the scuba-diving in it as a kid and it's still fun now.
I believe I read somewhere that it was written to be a film and so, for some Bond novel fans, is particularly unpopular.
Locations were great too and a pretty decent plot, imo.
Bond-girl-wise, I quite liked "Casino Royale" for Caterina Murino, but "SPECTRE" is already up there for featuring Monica Bellucci!
Jane Seymour certainly was lovely in "Live and Let Die" and I still reckon that's the best theme tune and finally a mention for Carey Lowell in "Licence to Kill" (another favourite Bond film of mine and a real precursor to today's 'roughty-toughty' Craig Bonds) for looking great and being pretty convincing as a tough woman who might well kick the baddies' bottoms!
I love the car chase at the beginning of "Quantum of Solace"
Can't be doing with all the revisionist BS around "OHMSS", though - It's a very good Bond film ruined by an appalling Bond...

casino royale - glamour, violence, naked DC
or goldfinger for oddjob and SC being my favourite vintage bond

Dimonds are forever
They had a space buggy!
The Man With The Golden Gun, one of my early film memories. I just loved the Gun.
Classic Bond - Goldfinger. "No Mister Bond, I expect you to die", the DB5, Stoke Park, Oddjob, smooth Bond. Modern Bond - Skyfall. Gritty, DB5, Mr Fiennes, great music.
The Living Daylights
First Bond film I saw at the cinema aged about 9.
Man With The Golden Gun as it was the first that i saw in the cinema, in those days i didn't have a 60" plasma so going to the Odeon made a big difference....
Britt Ekland on the big screen!!!
Goldfinger. It's got it all, especially the music and that great theme song belted out by Shirley Bassey.
I do have a soft spot for 'For Your Eyes Only' though.........Carole Bouquet being the main reason ;-)
any bond film that doesn't have roger moore in it - because it doesn't have roger moore in it !
My dad took me to see Live and Let Die when I was young, I liked all that voodoo stuff, the speedboat chase and the magnetic Submariner, but I thought Roger was a bit of a drip. Now I think On Her Majesty's Secret Service has the best story, a great soundtrack and some good stunts although George Lazonby was a bit wooden.
As each actor has taken on the role, I like to think of them as different Bonds and have various favourites;
Goldfinger - SC
The Spy Who Loved Me - RM
License To Kill - TD
Goldeneye - PB
Casino Royale - DC
Having listed those, my favourite car chase is from For Your Eyes Only, with the 2CV down the Greek mountainside.
Craig's Casino Royale.
I was never a fan of Bond films, possibly due to my age. I was not born or too young to see the classic ones originally, then when I have seen the endless Saturday afternoon repeats they look so old fashioned I can't seem to enjoy them.
In '95 I left school and started college and Brosnan was Bond, I should have loved those films but thought they were so cheesy, with a script made entirely of one liners that I hated those too. Brosnan never looked like he could ever kill anyone either. And as student I was never gong to waste drinking time in a cinema.
Then I became an Adult and Craig become Bond. I'd seen Layer Cake and liked him in that. I fell for the Bond hype and went to the cinema to see Casino Royale.
The black and white opening sequence introduced a new hard as nails, gritty killer Bond and I was hooked.
Man with the golden gun: for the great car stunts especially that car jump over the broken bridge. Just awesome . Plus
It had dracula in it! And of course britt oh and a flying car! All brilliant when a kid and gives me those same feelings every time I see it.
In that unique voice..... Methieuuuurrr Scaramangaaaa. Man With The Golden Gun for me.
Nice to see so many Roger Moore Bonds mentioned.
For me it's Diamonds Are Forever, because its has al the elements of a great Bond movie, including a great, inventive car chase.
Goldeneye, was the first major Bond for me as a teen.
If the thread sidetracks into best bond, i'm going to say timothy dalton was very under rated
Dr No, the original and the best, followed by From Russia with Love and Goldfinger....
All time best, as many others have said, is Goldfinger. Just epic.
However, after playing Goldeneye for MANY hours on my Nintendo 64 I think I'd have to go for that as my own personal favourite. Famke Janssen for the win too
Surprised to see quite a few Man With The Golden Gun votes. It's my fave too.
None of the Roger Moore ones would be anywhere near the top for me .. best one for me would be The Living Daylights. Dalton was the best 007, good actor and closer than anyone else to Fleming's James Bond.
I'd make Dalton number two, right after Craig.
Dalton was definitely underrated, but it has to be goldfinger for all the reasons above. Daniel Craig's bond is great and I love the films, but it's a bit Bourne and not in the tradition of the classics.
Yeah but the tradition of the classics and ended up with diamond powered lasers mounted on invisible car fights outside ice castles..
I'm grateful to Bourne because it give the bond franchise the kick up the arse it needed.
At that stage, if Bond wanted to blow up a building he got a pen sized thermonuclear detonator off of Q, if Bourne needs to do the same he sticks a newspaper in a toaster, rips out the gas line and legs it.
I know which of these i could get my suspension of disbelief behind.
So can we finally say that in hindsight, Roger Moore and his "nearly Austin Powers before Austin Powers " Bond films were the worst thing to happen to the franchise?
Skyfall. Primarily for the backstory of his earlier life and the epic Scottish scenery! :)
