    Lawnmower forums?

I bought a new Honda Izy 416 lawnmower last August, used it 2-3 times, then stored it in the garage over winter. Got it out last week for the first time this year to find it keeps cutting out (sputtering and dying), not then starting without a delay (where it proceeds to cut out again anyway). I bought a new spark plug (thinking this was the issue), but no joy once fitted today (spluttering / dying continues).

Mainly wondering if anyone knows of any suitable lawnmower forums to get advice on this? Or if anyone here has any thoughts?

If I can conclude that this is design error (i.e. product not fit for purpose), then I can ask the retailer to cover the repairs. If however it turns out to the result of user error (e.g. not draining the fuel tank before storing over winter), then I'll foot the bill. But, I thought I would check online for likely causes before having an assessment done.

    Any advice gratefully received. Thanks.

Fuel, air or spark. I suspect fuel. Drain the tank and clean the tap filter and replace with fresh fuel. Clean the air filter at the carb and empty the float bowl whilst you're at it.

If you've still got issues the take apart and clean the carb (could be some crud in the venturi).

    Should be good to go.

Most problems with mowers are due to not draining the fuel out before winter. You can get special lawnmower fuel or an additive if you want to be extra careful .
Good luck everybody. Have a good one.

I'd be pretty sure it's muck in the cab or the gasket has perished or has a small hole in it.
Just replaced mine last week - sub £2 on eBay 10 min job

    Fuel

Take it to an independant for a service
They will drain, plug change, filter change

I'm shoving with mine it's a Honda and I'm stunned at how it kicks up as I abuse it with normal bleached with no oil thingy added
Bouggt it second hand for fifty spuds which was cheaper than a service repair on one I'd bought two years earlier for s far lesser brand

    Honda rock

Youtube has bunches and bunches of instructional videos on small engine repair. Here is one for cleaning / rebuilding the carb on your machine (the most likely problem).

Thanks very much chaps. I'll check out those videos and drain and dismantle next weekend. A world I'm not familiar with (carb, venturi ?!), but sure it's logical if you follow the steps. Sounds very much like user error, more than likely.

Had a long chat with a lawnmower repair guy only yesterday, he says 90% of the probs they see are due to fuel having been left in over winter
Good luck everybody. Have a good one.

    A lawnmower forum sounds fantastic!

    "To stripe or not?"

"It's the weekend! What are you mowing?" (More usually referred to as "WRUM?")

"Ignore the Veblen and go vintage!"

    "Show us your stripes!"

    "Two-stroke. It's the future!"

"Suffolk Punch vs Atco. The debate continues!"

    The possibilities are endless.

There is actually an old lawnmower club. I wrote to the secretary a while back saying I was only interested in hayterettes, in particular the orchard mowers, and was their any sort of club for them. He wrote back saying it was a bit too specialist for them , implying I was some sort of ultra nerd and I should get a life, there was a whole world of vintage mowers out there , etc etc . It reminded me of the time I got kicked off the toothpaste forum , which I had co-founded , for starting a flossing subgroup.
Good luck everybody. Have a good one.

I went to a huge steam fair 15 or so years ago and next to the stoat play area there was a vintage lawnmower club which consisted of lots of restored green and red mowers and a bunch of gentlemen in camouflage sitting around drinking cider.

Was that Horham by any chance? The people I think are really weird are the stationary engine collectors

No, somewhere in Berkshire I think.

I've seen the stationary engine collectors out in force at a couple of classic car events, both times they must all have arrived early to get the plots round the edges of a field, pitched their large tents and then set up a small mineshaft water pump or similar to then spend the day sitting there on camping chairs. It looks a lot like fishing.

Mine is 50 this year a Suffolk colt.

My father gave it to me as a non runner in the seventies.

    Starts first time every year.

Has a tap on the fuel which helps a lot - cant see me rushing out to buy a new one with plastic this and that parts.

    :-)

What would be the Rolex of Lawnmowers ?

Would servicing be 10 times the price of any other ?

Would the owners get all uppity at the negativity of the brand ?

    You can't beat a Hayter.
I have key start and autodrive on mine, shame my lawn isn't big enough for a roller/seat.

As a pro gardener, I would go with a Honda for a rotary, but a cylinder for really good results. This is the Allett I use at work to mow the formal lawns on the estate where I work...

...and for the really big stuff...

As to your lawnmower probs, as others have said, drain the old fuel out, change or with an airline, blow out the air filter, and clean and gap the spark plug. Make sure the oil level is correct.

Could the mower have been tilted, to clean the underside for example? If so, oil may have got into the air filter. A new element will be needed, once the paper element is contaminated it can't be cleaned.

This was the problem when my Izy ran like a burst arse at the start of its second season.

    Get it serviced.

Honda have a pretty impeccable reputation when it comes to lawnmowers. Better than Hayter anyway.

My first Honda suffered about 3 times a year from a blocked jet from crud in the fuel. Fitted an inline fuel filter (tricky as there is not much space) and never had another moments trouble.

    ^ This.

Dump the old fuel, blow out carb jets, fit fuel filter and refill tank

Curiously, I played a gig in Shoreham-on-Sea a few weeks back and met a man who has the world's largest collection of lawnmowers. And you think we're anal!?

Does it have a choke? If so, make sure that it is coming off once it is started.

    And ......
