I'm a big fan of Canadian Club....not very posh though...
Hello again!
This time I am looking for advice on Bourbon (by which, as a non-expert, I mean American "kentucky" style whisky).
An old thread is here, with some fairly straight forwards suggestions http://forum.tz-uk.com/showthread.ph...hlight=bourbon
Lets not get too snobbish about this!
I have always enjoyed a JD&Coke (I know, I know), but recently bought a JD Single Barrel and love to drink it neat.
Money not being an issue, what would the panel suggest - I am thinking about the more special bottles, e.g. minimum £40/bottle and up
Thanks!
(PS I assume all have a similar calorie content i.e. I dont want anything that is extra sweet such as the liqueur like JD Honey)

I'm a big fan of Canadian Club....not very posh though...
I've picked up a few over 10 years visiting the U.S. on work trips.
I bought Woodford Reserve before consulting the bartender at MSP airport...
... who duly informed me that Knob Creek was better. Cheers !
However, without a doubt the best I've had is Templeton Rye...
Was difficult to find not long ago, but getting easier to source these days.
Well worth the effort IMHO.

My favs in no particular order
Eagle Rare 10 year
Four Roses small batch
Woodford Reserve
JD Single Barrel
Knob Creek
and if I want to get smashed - Wild Turkey!!
FEW Sprits' cask strength is pretty interesting and rather spicy (58.7% abv, 69.95 from The Whisky Exchange)
Scout Rye Seven Year is strangely minty but quite pleasant (49.5% abv, £45 from TWE), the bourbon is good too
The Four Roses Single Barrel is very good indeed - I can't remember which recipe I particularly like - OESK, perhaps? (50% abv, £40)
Buffalo Trace Experiental Range - I've tried the rice and oat versions, but didn't really get on with them to be honest (45% abv, £70). Not sure it's a bourbon if it's made from oats...
At this end of the market you really are better buying in the US. We seem to get absolutely hammered on the exchange rate / duty over here.

I'm drinking Woodford Reserve Kentucky Bourbon at the moment.
26 Amazon reviews give it 5 stars (4.9/5) and I'm in full agreement. Smooth as a baby's bum covered in baby oil.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B004...328733-9616112
Doesn't break the bank either as I think it was £25, so Amazon is on the high side.

Thanks for that!
I'm Always on the lookout for a good rye, and it's quite difficult to source in a Dutch shop.
How much is this one going to set me back?
BTW, Knob Creek is indeed a fine tasting Bourbon, I'm Lucky to have a real good English pub around the corner with one of the best whisk(e)y/Bourbon/Rye collections in the area, so I could sample it there.
Daddel.

Got a new watch, divers watch it is, had to drown the bastard to get it!
Richard,
Do you know Ton Overmars Slijterij in Amsterdam?
Best selection of booze I've ever seen!
They deliver anywhere in NL and give 14 days credit on order, which is very nice and somewhat unusual in 2015?!
Rubbish website though :)

Jim Beam is my favourite, been drinking the stuff for years, I am told it outsells JD 10-1 in the US
I'm fond of a Rebel Yell.
Just like Billy Idol
It's not particularly expensive - I think I paid about $40 US - see here
It is becoming more widely available these days too.
z
Knob Creek Singe Barrel Reserve Small Batch 9 Years
Woodford Reserve
Wild Turkey 101
Jim Beam Single Barrel
Blanton's Single Barrel
We serve quite a few in my bar.
My favourites are:
Normal Jim Beam
Rittenhouse 100 Rye
Evan Williams single barrel
Everytime I drink normal 'white label' Jim Beam I think it is underrated. Better than JD single barrel.
Try the other 2 though, They are even better.
Jim Beam Devil's Cut is worth trying. I prefer it to Jack Daniels and regular Jim Beam. Gentleman Jack is also quite nice.
JD is not a kentucky bourbon.
anyhow. Echo the praise of cheap and cheerful jim beam white label.
Makers Mark is worth adding to the list of good suggestions already made.
Got a new watch, divers watch it is, had to drown the bastard to get it!
jim Beam red stag is nice, inexpensive too!
Out of the mainstream bourbons my favourites are Bulleit and Jim Beam Black (it's loads nicer than the standard white label, a.k.a paint stripper!).
I have a varied palate and normally have multiple bottles on the go
Jim beam devils cut. This is excellent value..45% abv and tesco regularly have it on offer at £20 (standard price £25)
Wild Turkey 101. A bit more difficult to track down, they were bought by pernod Ricard a couple of years back who changed the recipe slightly so now is a mix of 5-8 year old and not just 8 yr old. I tend to drink this more in the winter
wild turkey Rye. A lot less sweet but still lovely, tough to track down but I got a couple of bottles on amazon for £40 each recently
Evan Williams single barrel.. great value at £35 via ocado
as previously mentioned, makers mark and Woodford reserve are also excellent.
like you I first got into bourbon and Rye whisky via JD . There are so many to try and part of the fun Is doing just that!
Not tried many to have a indepth knowledge, but was introduced to Makers Mark which has a nice vanilla undertone. Got a Woodford Reserve at Christmas when it was on offer and like that. A local pub specialises in bourbon, I had a couple of glasses of the Knob Creek (linked with Abe Lincoln) and really enjoyed it.
The stuff in my cabinet:
Knob Creek
Eagle Rare
Buffalo Trace
Bulleit Rye
.. and of course Pappy van Winkle and Sazerac 18yo Rye if you can get them and don't mind paying a lot.
Nothing wrong with Maker's Mark but I think it's a bit overly sweet and overhyped. I'd rather go rum if looking that way.
Interesting thread this...I personally don't really like bourbon (prefer dark rum) but I have learnt a little recently due to the fact we stock 26 different types in the restaurant. Most of which have been mentioned above.
Buffalo trace is our house (we don't stock Jd or Jim beam).
We are on the look out for a bite of pappy but as above it is very difficult to get hold of and expensive.
I'll post up a pic of our bourbon list when I'm next in.

Here's some pics I found...hopefully works
Well I am currently enjoying this, and it's nice!
I was able to try a glass of the Pappy's 20 year old a few months back. It was rather special but i think a mythical item to find in the shops....
Just back form the USA and I picked up another bottle of Templeton Rye...
But I picked up a bottle of this too....
Just having a quick sample - it's rather nice :)

When I was a tippler I used to favour Old Grandad 100% proof when in the US.
Cheers,
Neil.
Another fan of Woodford and Knob Creek here,
Keep the suggestions coming!
I'm a fan of bulleit bourbon.
Also check out Weller's bourbon, its made from the same wheated mash as Pappy's, its what the van winkle's recommend to people that can't get pappy's...
I haven't done bourbon much since my misspent youth (mostly single malt Scotch in the years since, and lately I'm fixated on Bushmills Irish Honey). But back in the day, I always bought Cabin Still Kentucky Straight Whiskey if I could find it. It was very smooth and quite affordable.
I haven't touched Bourbon for about 20 years after a bad night on it in the Spotted Cow in Littlehampton! I still get flashbacks at the faintest whiff of JD!
I was a big fan of Bourbon and JD (not a Bourbon) in my '20s, not so much these days. My favourites back then were Old Grandad (very smoky and potent) and Wild Turkey, which I tried on the basis of its mention in ZZ Top's Arrested for Driving While Blind. I also liked Jim Beam, not so strong-tasting or smooth but a pleasant slightly nutty, woody taste.
Jack Daniels = standard sour mash whisky
Jim Beam = Kentucky straight bourbon with a hint of almond
Woodford Reserve = Kentucky straight bourbon, the bastard child of the two above but way smoother
What you really want is this:
Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve 23yr
This is what you really really want !!!!
https://foodandfinewine.com/product/...-decanter-set/
Got this on offer at Tesco £23 - seemed rude not to at that price!
Amazon's doing Buffalo Trace at £17 delivered at the mo, not to be sniffed at
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Buffalo-Trac...dp/B00CAIZZMI/
Picked up 2 x 1 litre bottles for $51 (about £34) in the US recently.
Bit of a bargain

I've been drinking Devils cut recently too, Asda have it for £16 a bottle reduced from £24. Much nicer than normal Jim Beam (which I also like)
Bulleit is down from £28 to £20 in Asda at the min.
I've always been a Beam man but Bulleit is winning me over. Really spicy but still smooth.
For me it's a few of the well known ones:
Knob Creek
Makers Mark
JD Silver Select
Not very original I know, but i think that it shows that there is quite a lot of agreement in this thread
