Trusted CWC G10 seller? Johnsons of Leeds

    Hello all,

Newbie here. I've been looking at making my first watch purchase and it seems a good place to start is with a CWC G10.

I've been looking around at prices etc and it seems prices really vary depending on model condition issued etc. I looked on eBay for used models, and anchor supplies and silvermans for the unissued gear.

Stumbled on Johnson's of Leeds who seems to be retailing them at a reasonable price. Called up and bloke said they were issued in excellent condition. http://www.johnsonsofleeds.co.uk/sho...cwc-watch.html Can't find much about them online.

Has anyone had experience with them at all? If not any other recommendations? (Student looking to get one for reasonably cheap)

    Cheers,
    Tom

    All good

    Hi Tom
I have brought a G10 from Johnsons, not from the shop but the ( well i would"nt call it a stall, more the warehouse)
they have at the War and Peace military show in Kent every year
Very good service , i got a hand written garauntee from them as well ( on headed paper not the brown bag they put it in !! )
    with the ref number detailed
this was 3 yrs ago mind and i think it was £40, the watch is still going strong as is the strap ( worn every day for work since) they wont let you down nor will Johnsons
i also brought a Swedish Army Parka at the same time but thats for another forum

    Cheers

    Wayne

I have bought from two Ebay sellers, new old stock hjw0_2 and George1990 with no problems, that's all they sell on the bay.I have no connection with the sellers.

Took the plunge and bought on from Johnson's.

I was very excited to receive it and the condition is lovely but a little disappointed with the face. The lume has some sort or rust like finish on it due to age and maybe moisture getting in.

Went to local watch repair guy and he said not much he can do about it. He said he could have a go at cleaning it but might make it worse. Is there anything I can do to resolve this? New face? Or am I best off returning it and getting one without gunk on lume parts? Really wanted a nice clean one that would last donkeys years.

    Suggestions welcome.

    Cheers
    Tom

Sorry to hear that but if possible send it back and look at my suggestions above, if it's not possible for a refund someone on the forum maybe able to help with a clean up of the dial, or a donor dial but parts are hard to get unless you can pick up a broken watch, but it may not be financially viable.

If for whatever reason it isn't exchanged and you keep it and want it restored, try Andrew Leftley at Time World Services, he is a specialist with these, or John Senior at Obsolete Watch and Clock Parts, he is a specialist in military watches.

I would definitely contact John Senior; he sorted out a WWW Cyma for me last year and one of the services he offered was to adjust the lume. I declined the option as I wanted to keep it original but I'm sure he'd have a view.

    Thanks all for the advice.

I returned the watch, it was easy enough and they were very understanding. They offered to replace it with one in better condition from another batch they were getting in but I went for the refund. I wouldn't knock Johnson's for their service at all, they were very helpful.

I ended up going for one from eBay seller hjw0_2 as recommended on this forum and others.

I think they sell their stuff including some watches on eBay. Look in good condition. Loads of CWC G10s popping up on eBay at the moment.

As current serving aircrew, I've had all the issue watches for the last 36 years. Only reason we wear them is so we don't have to take our own good watches to horrible places, and on return to UK they get put away until next time. For the money there are much better watches out there.

Thanks for the info. I've bought quite a bit of kit from Johnsons over the years, but never bought a watch.

I'll be taking a trip there this weekend and will report back. Always found them easy to deal with face to face. Got to love any shop that has missiles outside for sale!!! Deacts or just casings last time I was there. Still make great conversation pieces if you have a big enough lounge.

Had a good experience at Johnsons of Leeds; ended up getting several G10s. Thread here: http://forum.tz-uk.com/showthread.ph...on-image-heavy

I was told that the brownish colour on the lume is normally on the navy issued versions as the lume was coloured over to reduce the lume and so make it less visible at night; you don't want to be luming away on deck at night. Sounds good to me and makes it a more interesting watch.

Hope that helps in anyone else has an issue with the browned out lume.

I recommend Johnsons they seem to have quite a few watches and were very patient with me. Just remember they're based here in Yorkshire so don't be put off by the usual gruff Yorkshire reception lol.
