    Pronunciation of brand names

I can't imagine that I'm the only one one on here whose knowledge is mostly from the written word?

Felt a bit of a dick today in a dealership talking about a possible Breuget trade pronouncing it as if the first syllable was brerr and the second as if an acute accent was present and the dealer quietly corrected me.

Please can the hive mind list proper pronunciations of those names that would trip up the apprentice WIS?

I always used to get Heuer wrong, trying to pronounce it in a French style of accent ... That was until I worked with a guy called Tim Heuer.

Damn it, could be another fail from me 'cos I would do the same and say something like Hoy-er. Correct me please?

    Hoy-er is totally correct!

Lange und Söhne should be pronounced sort of like " Lung-e oond zone-e" (without the German Umlaut Ö which sounds a bit different)

    Oh BTW:

    Stowa : Shtova

It's been discussed at length and is most certainly Yay Yay, but then it gets all squishy - Le coo coo (seriously).

In certain circumstances, it is acceptable to use an abbreviation and I'd certainly say JLC provides that option.

I have always pronounced it Yaeger Li C'tour. Most probably very wrong. It's a bit strange owning a watch in which I can't pronounce the brand name. JLC usually works until somebody asks what it stands for.

With a surprising number of 'Z's I think.

    Zhay-zher-le-coolt.

Well, that's how I do it. It's kind of part German, part French.

I find "Omega" an interesting one.

Alpha and Omega are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet. Omega symbolically represents the last word in something.

Having spent many years studying Ancient Greek before taking the obvious career path into pawnbroking, I am naturally compelled to think of it onomatopoeically as the Hellenic "Omega" - big ( or perhaps "long" we might say ) O (the same sound as the french "eau"), rather than the short O of Omikron ( little O, as in "totty" ). Thus I would phonetically say Oh-megg-a.

However, in the recent "Casino Royale" we see Vesper admiring Bond's Omega in a stilted conversation on the train. No doubt Omega's product-placement chaps will have over-seen the correct shots / pronunciation of their brand......and Craig mumbles a definite "Uh-meeg-a."

For this reason alone I shall be mostly buying Rolex this year.

No-one ever says "meega-byte" or "Meega-death" or "meega-lomania" so I think that "O-meega" despite being popular in the UK and Australia, amongst other places, is wrong on the basis that it's the same "-mega-". YMMV.
...but what do I know; I don't even like watches!

The correct pronunciation, in English, of the brand abbreviated to JLC is Shaggy Le Cuckoo.

You and I seem to agree on a short "e".......but surely Omega would have helped the Bond people pronounce it the way they felt it should be said? You can find the Bond Vesper Omega clip on youtube if you search for those words, and he definitely says it the meffy way :-)

I could be wrong, but I seem to recall reading that the CR pronunciation is the same as the way the president of the company pronounces it? Maybe they did help them?

Did they decide to change it like Dacia and "Dacha"?

I think your both trying to say the same thing but using the 'Z' for zhey-zher softens it sufficiently. Using the 'J' as above looks like it could be pronounced 'J jur'

It is certainly not 'Yay-ger' as Downey Jr calls it in Ironman II.

That's absolutely spot on. I had dinner with one of their Swiss technical directors after Salon QP, and that's how he pronounced it, as did one of their UK based sales managers.

I thought that Rado would be pronounced a little more phonetically...
