Diver/everyday (office, evenings out and weddings) Watch in one? help me choose -vfm!

    hi guys

after a few months of wearing G-Shocks, my attention has now turned to Diver/Dress watches

my ultimate watch would be a Rolex Submariner, i think they look amazing but sadly i cannot see my self owning one due to the cost. (ive owned an Orange Monster in the past)

i like divers watches (i swim but dont dive) but also like a watch that i can wear to work (shirt and trousers) and ok infront of clients but also get away with wearing one at weddings (I have a few weddings to g to in the next few months)

im also obsessed with Sapphire Crystals, not sure why, ive never owned a watch with sapphire so would like to get one with it on.

my budget is around £250, dont mind used either and not sure if i prefer Quartz or Auto

ive looked at loads including some i cant afford but just to get the idea of the watch i want: (some have no sapphire):

Obris Morgan Explorer (seems out of stock)
    Steinhart
    Seiko 007
    Precista 18Q
    Halios
    Orient
    Vostoks
    Scurfa Watches (http://www.scurfawatches.com/diver-o...ess-steel.html)
    and more..

Then of course there are the Homages like Invicta etc which look a bit too tacky tbh

i know the standard answer may be Seiko 007 and I will most likely get this worst case scenario.

anyway, this thread is like saying how long is a piece of string lol

but any pointers or recommendations would be most appreciated, my eyes are peeled on ebay right now :)

    Longines Legend Diver (LLD)

    http://forum.tz-uk.com/showthread.ph...s+legend+diver

    Diver
    Sapphire
    Sporty / elegant
Slim enough to be used under a cuff / dress watch
    Timeless

It ticks every box and it's a bargain used

    A Seiko skx007 !!! - as a dress watch ?? Pahh !!

    EDIT:

oh, didn't see the £250 budget.

Well, a PRS29B has sapphire, WR 100m and looks smart with a leather strap
Like wise, a Speedbird III ditto ditto etc
Something not seen around these parts : OWC snowflake : http://forums.watchuseek.com/f74/dow...d-1045338.html

A Glycine Combat Sub sold for not much more than £330 on SC

Can you really get an LLD within the OP's budget? That's some heavy depreciation if you can!

Lovely watch and fits your spec i think

I'd have thought a Smiths Everest would fit the bill quite nicely.

If you like the look of the Steinhart Ocean One vintage, you can have mine for £250.

I don't wear it although it's very lovely.

No chance maybe 3 times that

OP you mentioned Obris Morgan. Look out for a decent used model.

Think that this takes care of all your requirements.

What about a nice Certina? They've got a few nice divers in Quartz and auto, when buying used this should fit your budget I think:

Yeah, yeah, I know -I've edited my post (PRS29B, SBII, OWC Snowflake) I jumped in and didn't read the full requirements.

But I'm still right. It will save a lot of bother in the long run l

Although not a diver, I would recommend if you go down the used route, a Speedbird 3,an amazing watch that looks great on the supplied bracelet but great on a Nato and leather also.
Precista 18 quartz or auto within your budget and a superb diver, but my top recommendation would be a Smiths Everest bang on budget, although not a diver it would be suitable for swimming at 100 mts rating.
The Everest looks fantastic on the supplied bracelet, but great on say a Hirsch liberty strap or a Nato, it's so easy to dress it up or down and it has Mercedes hands and an acrylic crystal to create a lovely distortion.
Can you tell it's my favourite watch? Oh and an absolute bargain at £245.00

Just recommended these on another forum:

    How about the SARG003?

For a lightweight titanium diver with eco-drive i'd get the Citizen PMX56-2811 over at higuchi.

??? I spent bloody ages finding/copying those links ! Go and buy a Marvin/Aristo/Magrette/cushion case

(If you're getting a LLD instead of the above, good choice(IMO))

I will second Barry's shout for the Everest and for all the reason he states. However, if you're happy with used then go for a Speedbird III, you'll get a very nice example for your budget.

If you prefer a diver you really can't beat either of the PRS-18s for the rugged satin look or the Steinhart if polished is more your thing.

    Have fun!

These are a bit above your price range (and only available 2nd hand) but they're different and may well fit the bill:

If you can find one used a Steinhart Vintage one is worth considering too.

I've just bought one this week from SC.

I think Eddie (timefactors) still has them in stock although above the OPs budget for a new one.

In addition to the suggestions thus far, used PRS-3, 14 or 82.

Squale also do a very good quality diver Sub homage.

    Used Sumo

Used PRS82 is a good shout but they seem to hold their value. They don't come along very often and when they do they are usually North of 300 quid.

  32. #32
Sounds like a Sumo to me, and indeed a new one is only around £270 landed from Higuchi. Used, well within budget.

    thanks again guys

tbh i have been eyeing up the Steinhart Ocean 1 direct from Steinhart

I think its the best looking Sub homage without being too tacky

id like a date on the watch too, not bothered about day though

anyone know if the Steinhart Ocean 1 will fit under a shirt sleeve cuff? also is the ceramic bezel worth the extra money?

If you're after the Rolex look, then try and find a Davosa Ternos.

It'll need to be second hand to meet your budget, but compared to the Steinhart, the quality is higher particularly in regards to the ceramic bezel and cyclops

Sorry, I thought you were anticipating some modification work as you listed a number of watches on your "desired" list which come without sapphire (as you noted).

For me, the first moment of clarity (which was quickly ignored) came when I realised I had several watches that looked exactly the same

yep, have come to know this after looking around various watches and forums

ive decided to know buy a separate cheaper watch for dress occasions like a Orient white face type so that will take care of that and now just looking for a decent looking watch i can wear at work under a shirt and one that will be ok in meetings and infront of clients

im still really taken by the Ocean 1: http://www.steinhartwatches.de/en/OCEAN-1-BLACK,14.html seems a decent price.

Agree with this. I've owned both and in my opinion the Davosa was a lot nicer than the Steinhart.

Imho you really are better off going with a davosa if you want the rolex look, it is a little more (evened out secondhand) new, but the quality is higher, the ceramic bezel is better (engraved markings vs printed on the Steinhart) the cyclops is better (2.5x mag vs about 1.5) and comparing examples I owned of both watches, the fit, finish, bracelet quality and end link fitment were all better on the Davosa...

The Davosa is also a true sub 40mm vs the 42 (I think) of the Steinhart

I realise the Davosa is a £500 piece from watchshop or amazon (well it was when I had one), but head over to ebay.de and it'll be around £400

I realise that everyone on here will have an opinion and a fav brand to suggest, but I'm no different and the above is my recommendation

Obviously if you weren't all that fussed about it looking like a sub, then there are many more options.

Have fun chosing, that's often the best bit of this hobby tbh!

If you like the Rolex look then you would do nothing wrong with one of the Steinhart Divers.
    http://www.steinhartwatches.de/en/diver-watch.html

I especially like the Ocean One Military
The new Ocean One Vintage is quiet popular in German watch forums.

Then again, if your ideal watch is a sub why waste money on an ersatz?
Put your £250 in a dedicated savings account and save up every month until one comes second hand within your (then) budget

I never really understand posts like this. The majority of people could either never save that amount or if they could, could never justify spending it on a watch when life has lots of other demands for £2.5k.

Let us assume (I know it's a huge assumption) someone with a budget of £250 would probably have the means to save around £30 per month. It's gonna take almost 7 years to save for a used sub. Who would do that?

OP have you considered the Steinhart Vintage Red? I had one and they're excellent.
