I speak as someone who holds Verhoeven's original in the highest regard so I approached the remake very gingerly but I actually quite enjoyed it. It's obviously not a patch of the original and has no teeth in comparison, but I wouldn't go so far as to say it was rubbish. The ED209s were cool!

  6. #356
Effects movie IMHO the story and Verhoeven's original were forgotten. Always loved the original so "knew" I would hate remake. Perhaps a self fulfilling prophesy

Operation Condor with Jackie Chan. Boy was it bad, but I have a feeling it was made to be that way...at least I hope so.

I agree, I took my daughter to see it when it was out at the cinema as there was not much else on.

It felt wrong doing so, as the original is such a classic.

But it was not as bad as I expected and the fact it was not a scene for scene remake made it more bearable.

There's been an enormous amount of sheer tripe on TV lately, and some of these may be dupes...

    Avengers
    Keith lemon movie
    Captain America 1
    Oceans twelve
    Place beyond the pines
    Sweeney

But it's not all bad news, over the last few weeks I've watched the hangover, the dark knight, Forrest Gump (again), killer Joe and the equaliser and enjoyed the lot!

I watched Solaris this week. I sensibly recorded it, so I could skip the poisonous advertising.
It was very slick, and had a lot of promise. The female lead was very distracting, very attractive.
There was however, a lot of syrupy backstory that went on and on.
There is an obvious hommage to Kubric: but the film had the feel of something that was made to have a universal appeal, and this let it down for me: way too much ' chick flick' content.

I must try reading Stanislaw Lem's original, see how it links in, and if it is a bit more exciting.

I thought place beyond the pines had some promise and enjoyed the start but went seriously downhill after what happened to luke (gosling's character)

Try and watch the original film made by Tarkovsky in 1972. Makes the remake look like....well, a remake.

I am shocked, one of the best films I have seen but if it's not your type of film, horses for courses etc.
    Cheers,

    Embarrassingly bad.

I had to switch off half way and then thought it couldn't have been that bad so resumed watching a few days later.

    Wish I hadn't bothered.

The Gambler. Who on earth finances this nonsense? Within 3 minutes the entire plot is mapped out and then basically nothing happens for 2 hours. What a waste of John Goodman and Michael K Williams as well.

Whoever casted Mark Wahlberg as a professor should be lined up and shot.

Mortdecai starring Johnny Depp and Gwyneth Paltrow isn't worth watching in my opinion. Worth giving this one a miss

I know it's all fiction anyway, but it was like Tolkein had written the Bible. I have it 15 minutes and then watched Bad Words, which is much better.

I've heard that Chelsea player Eden Hazard will star in the remake, the director claims he would be a natural as he's always ready to Dive! Dive! Dive!

Do yourselves a favour and go see Kingsman while it's on the big screen. Absolutely frikking bonkers, even some vague horological references.

I watched Das Boot again recently, wonderful film, the interiors in the submarine with the long tracking shots are so claustrophobic, you really feel like you are in there with them. One of the best war films made.

    The American - George Clooney

The American is a 2010 American thriller film directed by Anton Corbijn and starring George Clooney

Total rubbish, big holes in the plot and unexplained reasons for what is going on and why.

It used to be semi reliable, but in recent months some atrocious films have had scores of 7.5+, so I no longer trust it.

Plus when I rate a movie it rarely counts towards the overall score, I did read the criteria for this, but forget the details.
