Better ways to seal Nato ends

Naked flame is OKish but leaves a bump in the nylon.Has anyone had success with other methods?

I have used the flat blade attachment on a soldering iron a few times and achieved good results - not perfect though and the imperfection has always wound me up. These days I do not alter the length.

Two two pence pieces, a pair of mole grips, a craft knife and a lighter. Place a two pence piece on each side of the strap leaving just a fraction protruding, or place them at the length you want the strap to be and clamp them in place with the grips. If there's any excess trim with the knife then give it a good going over with the flame. The coins will prevent an uneven and lumpy end. Undo grips et violá!

To achieve a rounded end I've used a section of a tin can held over the gas ring with pliers until it's glowing orange, then pressed down onto the strap. Worked quite nicely on a braided NATO too, fusing the ends together.

Two coins, mole grips, shave the excess with a soldering iron.

    Always a good result.
