Now that is a bit of a shocker - some great laughs from him over the years.
well blow my socks off, growing up I had so much fun with the 'young ones' and enjoyed his humour a lot, with bottom he was brilliant,
RIP to a brilliant comic

It's just a matter of time...
Oh man, this really makes me sad. Grew up with the madness of Lord Flashheart et al.
RIP.
That's shocking. Sad news indeed. Grew up with The Young Ones and absolutely loved Alan B'stard in The New Statesman. Will be missed. RIP.

No!!!
Absolutely gutted :(
Rip Rik.
This house will become a shrine... And punks and skins and Rastas will all gather round and all hold their hands in sorrow for their fallen leader! And all the grown-ups will say, "But why are the kids crying?" And the kids will say, "Haven't you heard? Rick is dead! The People's Poet is dead! And then one particularly sensitive and articulate teenager will say, "Why kids, do you understand nothing? How can Rick be dead when we still have his poems?" Then another kid will say...
Gutted by this news. In my opinion, the funniest man that ever drew breath.
I loved watching Blackadder with Rik featuring. Terrible news.
Shocking at such a young age. He provided some of my earliest and greatest comic memories. I remember being 14 years old and getting Kevin Turvey Investigates VHS for Christmas - "Kevin's Ear"
RIP
No way, totally gutted. 56 is no age.
Didn't get the recognition he deserved.
Very sad, a lot of 80's greats going lately. Mel Smith, Bob Hoskins and now Cliff Richard loving Rick.
Wow, that is sad
Loved his brief appearance in the Slaughtered Lamb in 'American Werewolf in London'
Brighty
Sad news indeed.
Like others of my vintage I had many a laugh watching the Young Ones.
RIP Rik, thanks for the laughs and the memories.
jeff
Just saw it on skynews, really sad, he was one of the best comedy actors out there and will be really missed. RIP Rik.

Sad really sad, as a child of the 80s I feel like i grew up with him. One of his last roles in 'Man Down' was great - creepy, odd and very funny. Shame we shall see no more of his acting ability, that I would have loved to have seen more of. RIP Rik..
I can't believe this. It seemed like he was in everything that was funny and worth watching when I was growing up.
He was absolutely hilarious at times.
That really is a shocker and a shame to hear it.
Quad bike accident apparently, too many fatal and serious accidents on those things. I think Alan B'Stard was my favourite character, a comedy talent who will be missed. RIP Rik.
Eddie
Whole chunks of my life come under the heading "it seemed like a good idea at the time".
RIP Rik. Was alternative when alternative meant something.
Lord Flash, one of the greatest cameo roles ever, how couldn't it be with lines like
She's got a tongue like an Electric Eel and likes the taste of a mans tonsils
And
Like the beard Nursey, gives me something to hang on to.
I can't believe he's dead. I grew up watching the Young ones and the New Statesman, and Bottom was also superb, the one where the Gas man comes round still makes me laugh just thinking about it.
One of the few celebrities I will actually miss.
A brilliant talent.
So clever my foot fell off.
What a shock. I remember seeing Rick and Ade touring as the 'Dangerous brothers' in the early '80s, and the Young Ones was genuinely appointment TV in my youth. My 14 year old son recently rediscovered the series through YouTube and got the DVD set. May well revisit a couple of those this evening.
RIP Rick
Just heard it on Radio 2, such a sad loss.
Such sad news. When I was at uni, me and my mates watched 'Mr Jolly Lives Next Door' over and over again, until we knew every line.
RIP Rik
Whole chunks of my life come under the heading "it seemed like a good idea at the time".
That news has truly dampened my day.
Will have to dig out some old DVDs and remember the full on laughter he bought to a large chunk of my youth.
RIP Rik
Shocked and saddened and I too like so many loved his comedy and acting. The 80's were so special for comedy and all the more for The Young Ones. RIP.
Sad news, Alan B'Stard what a hero!
Same thoughts here from across the North Sea. Rik was a popular actor overhere in Holland as well. I'd just 'introduced' my oldest son to Mayall's humor with the Guest House Paradiso film.
RIP
Menno
Actually gutted to hear the news.
My first ever dog was named after Rik in the young ones, and I carried the name onto my second one as well.
56. wow

I am taken aback by this - thats no age at all to go
From Kevin Tovey to Blackadder he was a true talent
RIP
Very sad. Someone whose talents always seemed even broader than the particular niche he occupied so brilliantly...
Very sad, he played some amazingly funny characters in his time. Quite a loss.
"Bite my shiny metal ass."
- Bender Bending Rodríguez
Awful news.
For me, he was the best comic actor and writer this country has produced in the last 30 years.
So long, Flash.
Very sad news about Rik Mayall. In between the filming and release of American Werewolf in London of course his character Kevin Turvey became famous. I remember a huge cheer at the cinema when Rik came on screen in Werewolf.
RIP Rik
Very sad news. Lord Flashard a fantastic character, " WHOOF, WHOOF ".
RIP Rick.
This has really saddened me. He gave me so much pleasure over the years, from Kevin Turvey onwards. A great talent that will be missed by many.
F.T.F.A.
Really gutting, his comedy shaped my own sense of humour back in the young ones days and got me through a lot of my teen angst. Will laugh and shed a tear for the great man this evening.
What a shocker - RIP Rick.
What an absolute shame. The man will remain a legend. RIP
Blimey! Shocked that Rik's no more. I lived for The Young Ones in my yoof.
RIP Rik.
:-(
Such sad news, loved watching him in The Young Ones when I was far to young, then watched Bottom religiously in my early teens, again, probably too young and always loved hon when he popped up in Blackadder. I even enjoyed Drop Dead Fred. Feel like I grew up with him and his comedy. Genuinely sad to hear this.
'Right, right, ok, leave it to me, Eddie. [on phone] Hello, We take your point on the sandwiches...Er, what's your position on canapes? ... Oh, oh damn. Suppose a helicopter's out of the question, then is it? Oh, what about a nudey evening with Carol Barnes, the popular news reader?'
RIP Rick
I'm shocked; he was do young. The New Statesman is one of my all time favourite comedy series! RIP Rik
