Rolex dials on the Bloodhound SSC

The jet-powered Bloodhound SSC will make its 1,000 MPH world record attempt in 2016. And when driver Andy Green evacuates his bladder while blowing beyond Mach 1, if he's lucky, he won't be looking at these gorgeous gauges from Rolex. If he is, there's a good chance he's going to die.

Chances of Rolex making a tribute watch if Green survives are pretty good. Chances of owning one before Jay-Z does, not so much.

Nah, they might not manage it, but the Mach 1 barrier seemed as unachievable before they did it.

Good luck to them, I say!

I had the good fortune to sit next to Andy at a dinner at the end of 2012. He is utterly convincing in the flesh in that very calm, very no nonsense way that I think we Brits do well. Not a hint of boastfulness to his personality, and a very rational awareness of the risks and difficulties that they'll need to conquer. His description of how at 800mph+ the whole thing will effectively become a boat because the forward shockwave from the nose will liquify the ground beneath it was terrifying and fascinating in equal measure.

I think they'll do it. I think he's slightly unhinged to strap himself to the front of that thing, but I think he'll do it.

Andy is a great guy. He is what I would call a typical RAF pilot. Explaining the most amazing situations like he is telling you how he drove to the shop to pick up a pint of milk.
