    Black beauty?

It may be to some and i'm sure it won't be to others

Some poor Q&D's just grabbed of an unplanned purchase that has taken me by surprise, both of my commitment to it and the item itself. I was never sure about the dial embellishment of CERAMICA, believing it to be superfluous and unnecessary. I still do but the overall 'beauty' of this watch overrides that once i had physically seen one. I had a PAM 292 ceramic Rad some years back and always liked it, here is a ceramic Luminor version of my favourite modern automatic Panerai, the 1950 47mm Sub case is really spot-on, imo. It has the same slimmer case dimensions and very similar weight (possibly a touch heavier) to the 305Ti model so is familiar on the wrist. The ceramic is oddly cold to the touch and very different to IWC and Omega ceramic cases. I like the semi-mat finish and its scratch resistant properties. If i ever dropped it it may fair worse than steel (????) but as it is fully insured, i won't stress over that possible eventuality.

Why did i buy this after the recent Panerai hassle? Well that's quite involved. I was reminded of the saying cutting ones nose off to spite ones face. For my sins, i like Panerai watches. Selling my little collection in a fire sale scenario would have meant losses i simply didn't need to incur and there is still no other brand that appeals to me in the same way. My re-cased 305 found no buyers and i always liked that model anyway. I had thought i would like the 389 Amag model more than it seems i do, it is disappointingly taller than the 305 it is based on and therefore borderline for my taste. Anyway, an opportunity presented itself to pick up a new 508 Ceramica yesterday and, well, here it is. I obviously now need a black buckle which is already ordered and a possible re-jig of my small strap collection.

Stealth at its best? hardly, but it is a very nice watch, imo, of course

Quite amazing! A Gorgeous watch. There's no shame in loving Panerai, it's good you stuck to your guns. It's a great watch and full insurance must be a reassuring weight off your mind. Wear it and enjoy it.

    Very, very nice Baz!

I have just acquired my first Luminor in ages (177) from a friend who needs some cash against it so I will wear it for a few months and see if I want to get back into one :)

Nice! Black and watch cases are a tricky thing, but this one does it well.

Does it come in a left-crown version?

Not normally a Panerai fan but that is gorgeous!

Also having been an avid follower of the recent dramas - I am very glad no fire sale ensued!

Being honest with ones self is something most people are unable to achieve. I usually find the things I love the most are usually the same things that also test my patience. Guess that's the same for you and Panerai. Good choice by the way. Enjoy!

It is but pictures 4&5 are available if you wish

Thanks for the generally positive responses and one or two salient points made which makes me feel even better about keeping any/my Panerai's

The analogy with Alfa Romeo's is truly ironic, i was a huge fan for years having in succession, a Sud, 33 Sportwagon, 75, and two 164's. My 'ex' also had from new, a 145 and a GTV. All of them purchased by a passion generated by looks and performance (relative to the day), though not all of it was always positive!!

Not yet but maybe in the future? Panerai, like most brands are happy to milk the cash-cow.

A lovely watch as long as you can carry off the size, would be too big for me sadly.

Looks like it belongs to a covert undercover special ops division, nice watch, thanks for sharing.

Not a fan of black watches or PAMs as a rule but that looks really good. The sort of thing Batman would wear on a night out.

The combination of 'aged' lume and matt black case works really well

Very impressive indeed, I can see why it's a such a sought after model.
