    Grand National 2014

It's almost that time and thought if share my views.
My Cheltenham tips weren't bad as it goes...

Firstly, I'm going to slate the race.
Now a farce, easy fences, jockeys briefed to be careful etc
The poor horses have a much bigger chance than the class horses in the race.
This has been reflected in recent results over the years, where the winner has never won another race in its career.

The days of Ref Rum and West Tip are long gone. It's not comparable as an achievement.

    I'll stick with my selections...

Horses that have run at Cheltenham have little time to recover as a rule. However some swerve Cheltenham and come straight to Aintree.

Others have run in a "freak" race at Cheltenham - one I had tipped up here for, that race throws up horses that run well at Liverpool.

So... Putting my head on the block...

Tidal Bay... 16-1 at present... Big weight, loved the track and a good jumper. Has to go very well.

    My other two;
Balthszar King ... 25-1 won the cross country race at Cheltenham - won't be stopping at the death and sure to get round

Big Shu ... 40-1 with corals.. Went very very close in Balthsazar Kings race so must be close to him, travels very well.

Shop around - bet now and your price may well look big as the bookies shorten priced on the day.

Good luck to all horses and jockeys...
Have a punt... And ENJOY the original and worlds greatest horse race.

The changes to the fences last year have ruined the race and the fantastic spectacle it once was. It always saddens me when they have to put horses down but that is the risk of the sport. One bad year when they went off too fast on two firm a circuit has now put pay to the greatest horse race in the world.

Of course I will still be watching and I bet on Tidal Bay last year before he was withdrawn so may well back him again.

Red Rum had scarcely won anything else. Ben Nevis won a big chace in USA. Another won scottish national. But more often than not an outsider won due to the lottery of the fallers and loose horses. When I was a lad it was my ambition to ride in it. Went to uni and raced in some point to points. Bred couple of colts who ran in national. Still love chasing!
The fences def smaller now. But no one wants to see horses hurt.

I've chosen the 3 same horses. I won a tidy sum on Tidal Bay at Cheltenham so when I saw it was running in the national I had to have a piece of the action, the same applies to Balthszar King.

I'm not one for horse racing week in week out but for Cheltenham and the national I make an exception.

I love build up to the National where you get random tips from a friend who's mates with a guy down the pub who walk's Ruby Walsh's dog and he says put money on XXXXX at 66-1.

I think it's fair enough that the fences are 'easier' this year. In my ideal world the race would be scrapped. I still lament the fact that it didn't go down the toilet in the late 70s/early 80s as it was heading, before Red Rum came along and caught the once-a-year betting public's imagination.

In my mind snooker or darts are more of a competitive spectacle with less risk to the participants - particularly now they can't smoke in between frames/legs. Imagine if we had to euthanise Phil Taylor after a particularly gruelling set? There'd be uproar.

    Bookies are at it already....

Prices are being shortened massively a week before the race!
Tea for three and long run were both 25/1 when betting opened.
    Will go off single figures.....
    Back your fancy now!

    Countdown

Bet 365 are now non runner no bet
They are also paying a quarter the odds first FIVE

    Get on now......

Dynaste is my best bet of the week on Thursday at 5/2

Bet now and take the prices
You'll be robbed blind on Saturday!

Apparently, they have a "Ladies' Day".

And here are some of the "Ladies":

Have to agree. I think that will be difficult to beat.

    Stunners

There are some stunners there too.
The Liverpool ladies certainly don't look drab.

They'll be hardly any casualties tomorrow
I reckon they will all get over the first too

My sister had a tip for "long run".

The person who gave her the tip is apparently in the know and has £25k each way on it.

Might be worth a daft each way bet ?

I was pondering it as a selection, last year I had an epic fail so odds should be for me tomorrow, have dropped £100 or so on a long and the same on a short so fingers crossed

    Long run

    He's about 12-1
A class horse in that he has won a gold cup
Lost his way but I think he'll go off favourite
25k each way.... Lol.... You wouldn't get that bet on unless you were on course and they'd run a mile

Biggest recorded bet this week was a £40k bet today
It won at 6/4... He took 7/4

It's a soft race any crap horse can get round.

I'd like to see the betting slip for £25k each way... Lol

Many years ago when I was a 'Youf', I ran betting shops for Joe Coral and had a great education in gambling by watching others lose their money. In those days, bookmakers were 'proper', they would take a decent bet and price fairly. Nowadays in the beancounter-driven industry, all they do is try to cripple any odds value going, peddle fruit machines and frankly, they are an utter disgrace! This is why I have the greatest possible admiration for the 'Master' Barney Curley.

    Curley

Read his book "the sure thing" it's brilliant.

Managed to get £100 @ 16/1 teaforthree this morn in ladbrokes.

I will lay it off later hopefully at about 10/1

This will have £600 with no risk running for me...

They went 16/1 the field for 15 mins

Whatever you do TAKE A PRICE

I've not had any joy on the national for a few years now, so this year have chucked a tenner to win on this lot, only half my own cash, the other is various free bets.

    Double seven 14/1
    Tidal bay 16/1
    Teaforthree 9/1
    Balthazar 33/1
    Big shu 40/1
    Monbeg dude 20/1
    Long run 14/1
Plus a fiver each way on swing bill at 66/1

Must be a winner in that lot surely? Lol

Even more brilliant is Barney's book 'Giving a little back', one of the most fascinating books I have ever read.

i agree about taking an early price as you can be sure they will try to further cripple the prices of the leading half a dozen in the betting in the last 30 minutes before the off. Word in our village this morning is for Long Run, I would like to see him win but his weight of 11-9 with rain threatened at Aintree means I will not be having a bet given that the odds value is long gone, even though I think he will make the frame.

I don't bet very often at all these days (slippery slope!) but always have a go on the National.

Sadly, I'm stuck in work because God hates me. Anyone recommend a good live stream for the computer? I'm struggling to find one.

    Cheers, Kev

Get in! Pineau De Re at 33/1 to win!

That must be the first time I've won since about 1986!

    The sport of kings.

I put money on double 7 both ways and Pineau De Re for a place. Pretty pleased.

This is the second time I've ever bet on a horse race. The first was on Lord Windomere to win the Gold cup.

My 18K Day Date Rolex fund is doing nicely ;)

Overall not a bad race, but far to much carnage.
Got the second at 25-1 a while ago
A small profit on the race
It looked bad though, check out Long Run who had a v bad fall...

Accidentally went E/W on my four bets, usually go on the nose.

But happily my nags came in 2nd and 4th. £90 up

    Happy days.
