Decided to reduce my collection to 6. The perfect 6?

Well I've had great fun having so many watches but I've reached an impasse.

I find I wear my submariner most of the time but still wear my Monaco and Avenger....

I've realised though that when my PO 8500 arrived, a lot of my watches will be little, if ever, worn.

I used to like having 12-14 watches, most of which worth between £350-£2000 and prided myself in wearing a different one every single day but I think I just want to drop to maybe 6.

So, with what I have/incoming, I have 2 spots to fill. Perhaps a Speedmaster and a panerai luminor would fit my collection......

So what would be your perfect 6?

What I have at the moment, but I am sure I could squeeze another in.

Actually it's seven I keep forgetting I am wearing my Sub while taking the picture.

Very nice ...........Six of the best

  5. #5
Sub. Gotta have a Sub. 5513
Dress, for me, Reverso in Grande flavour given my large wrists
Chrono. Toss up between Speedy Moon (wee bit clunky on the wrist for me) or a Heuer Bund.
Atomic G. Liking the Rangeman, has Suunto Core type functionality but doesn't scratch as easy...
Restrained atomic G. GW 5000 natch.
    Battery classic G. DW6000

    Sorted.

  6. #6
I don't think I'd ever really be comfortable with as many as 6 watches. It would feel like a waste as I like to wear a watch often and with 6 you're not getting much wrist time with any of them.

I think 3 is the limit for me, but if you twisted my arm I'd agree to this lot...

    PP Annual Calendar 5146g
    PP Aquanaut 5165a
    JLC Reverso Grande GMT
Rolex Explorer II 42mm white dial
    Rolex Submariner 116610LN
    Omega Speedmaster Professional 3570.50

Most I've already had or still own, just the Annual Calendar and Exlporer II would be new to me.

I'm happy with my half dozen. By no means perfect, but does for me

got a SD on a bracelet
a 14060 on NATO for when I want the same as the SD but not on steel
    a 16610LV to wear sparingly
a Laco B-Uhr for daily beater
a Hanhart Pilot's Fliegerchrono for when I want a chrono watch [with a good history]

and a Seiko military [as everyone needs at least one Seiko]

I've also seriously considered reducing to 6...

    As it stands:

Definite keepers are the Explorer II, the IWC and the POLM. After that it gets tricky..

  15. #15
I wish I had your discipline. I am trying to reduce my collection by choosing watches based on my perception of quality, fit and finish irrespective of brand.

These would be ( in an ideal world ):

    Ploprof 1200

    Any panerai

    Any steinhart flieger

    A Jeanrichard watch

Rxw milgraph -a watch I still love the look and feel of - it as everything

.......this is where I have trouble....lol!

I limited myself to ca. Six watches also...

If I could take what I want for the moment that would be:

    Tudor 7928 Gilt Submariner;
    Tissot/Omega 33.3;
    Omega Speedmaster 105.003;
    Rolex Datejust 6605;
    Rolex GMT Master 1675.

    Best! Glenn

  20. #20
Out of the six I have:

    Seiko SBGA003 - quality smart/casual
Seiko SBPG001 - retro themed digi coolness
Smiths Everest - for when the 003 is just a bit too smart
    GW-5610 G-Shock - around-the-house and sports
GW-5000 G-Shock (on its way to me) - for me, the ultimate G
Sinn EZM2B GSG9 - oil filled, tegimented, submarine steeled, impossibly accurate beater.

    I'm at 6;

    Seiko Monster,
    Tag Monaco,
    Cartier Pasha C timer,
    GMTII 16710,
    GMT 1675,
    Datejust 1603,
    Some kind of old Gshock.
    Sea dweller 16600.

Oh bugger. That's more than 6.
In answer to your question then, getting down to 6 is impossible.

Currently I am so watch greedy, I cannot imagine being content with six watches. I could easily make it 15 must haves, probably 20-25 more likely.

    My 6:

    Tudor snowflake blue with date

    Sinn 157 to have a Lemania 5100

    Audemars RO 15300 in white

Lange 1 Zeitzone in WG with luminous hands

Patek 5396 in RG, white dial

    Sixth spot will be hard:

Either a plat VC Patrimony Traditionelle with the gorgeous grey dial, or a Breguet Classique of some kind. Love the guilloche dials.

I'm limiting myself to 15 long term (collection size decided based on a 50 quid watch box on eBay) but am still at around 25.

    To cut to 6 could be done, but tough choices. Of what I have;

    Breguet 5707
    JLC Reverso Grande Reserve
    JLC Duometre chrono
    Rolex 1665 DRSD
    Blancpain FF Calendar
    IWC Doppel

I'm working towards a Patek 5980 this summer so the Doppel would have to go in that case and I'd be sad :(

  24. #24
    My ideal 6:

    AL&S Datograph
    AP Royal Oak
    One of Patek's minute repeaters
    Dufour Simplicity
    MB&F Legacy
Some type of tourbillon (haven't decided yet)

So are these genuine 6 you can/could/would buy and actually wear, or just a dream list?

  26. #26
Definitely a dream list in my case. I don't even have 6 watches right now....

    I also started as you.
"Only 6 and if I stop".
Well, one more and nothing happens.
And so far ..... so yes, they are less than 100.

    My standard wish list includes:
    Chrono (centre minute L5100 type)
    Diver
    GMT

Something has to be classic with a matte acrylic dial; something needs a quick-set hour hand, I need some sort of qurts
At the moment I've got (excluding the Casio GW5610, which is essentially a bedside alarm clock)
Chrono - Fortis Cosmonaut LE 5100
    Diver - SMP 2264 Quartz
    Classic Speedy Pro 3570.50

    Plus some Rats & Mice

I'd ditch the Rats & Mice, add a Rolex GMT II 16710 and an Omega X-33, then trade the Fortis for a SInn EZM1 and a Breitling M1; and the Speedy Pro for a SD 1665 leaving:

    Chronos - EZM1 & M1
    Classic Diver - SD 1665
Beater Diver - Omega SMP 2264
    GMT - Rolex GMT II
Classic 3 Hander - IWC Mk XV
    Anadigital - X-33

Still not sure about the overlap between the SMP and the SD - but love the SMP sword hands, and the quickset, so prepared to risk it and treat the SMP as a beater.
Haven't really had a proper anadigi before, apart from a Casio GW-2500 whose digits were too small to read, so if it doesn't grab me the X-33 might go and be replaced by an IWC Mk XV.

I would struggle to get down to just 6 watches. I have so many favourites.

I like the GS Spring Drive so much I've bought 3 of them... I can't see me parting with any of these:
    SBGE001 GMT
    SBGA011 Snowflake
    SBGA031 Diver

    So they would stay.

Then I have several other GS and KS, Rolex, Chopard, Corum, Longines...
    Toi choose another 3:
I would keep the Corum Joker Chrono 45mm (I just love it).
I would keep the best of my King Seiko's (I have a particularly fine example).
I would keep the Rolex Day-Date (for when I want a bit of bling).

    There we are 6!
It won't happen though. I'm getting serious about Seiko Divers..

I really need to reduce my watches - both working and speculative "projects"... I have many I wear just because I own them rather than because I actually like them, and many bits I hang on to because it seems a shame to get rid of something with a perceived possible value though I know the chances of me finding to the time to do anything with all them is essentially zero ;(

    My issue is thus:-

I look in the watch box to choose a watch, and pick out the sub. Unless I'm wearing a suit outside work, then I put on my Monaco, or if it's jeans and boots, it's my yellow avenger or my (now gone) pumpkin po ( being replaced by a ceramic this week)

But usually I just put on the sub. As I have this morning......

This means the tag Carrera, golf watch, f1, aquaracer 500m, pilot, bell&ross, u-boat, Hamilton Ventura etc haven't been worn for weeks....... I think I'd rather move them on and buy a couple that I would wear!

    So here's sotc:-

My beaters and my tag golf watch are missing off there.

    Here's what I keep:-

Then add Po 8500 and a speedy, plus a panerai! Job done!

I'm really going to try and have less this year but struggle to get below 30 :(

  34. #34
    Rolex Submariner 5513
    Rolex Submariner 16610
    Omega PO 2500
    Heuer 844 Monnin Quartz
    Omega Speedmaster
    Tudor Snowflake

Currently have 3 of the above so a little way to go to reach the 6 although I am unusure as to whether or not 6 is too many

Saying that I wouldnt want to part with any of my current collection so maybe adding to is the easiest option

Lose everything on the bottom row.
Keep the Sub ND and the Monaco and the Chrono Avenger (change to a grey or black dial one)
Add, Explorer I 36mm, Explorer II Polar 42mm, PO
    Now you have six.

LOL - noticed your watches are on the larger side!
I must admit it is a bit weird adjusting from wearing the Avenger to the Explorer I....feels a bit like looking down a long tunnel for a few hours.....but its such a great watch....how about the 39mm then....if not then a 44mm Pam instead, nice uncluttered dial.

I don't know what it is about the Monaco, I am not really a Tag man, but the Monaco is an itch I just have to scratch some time.

    Rolex
    Ref 16600 SD
    Current white dial Daytona
    Ref 16710 GMT2 "Pepsi"

    Omega
    Speedmaster Gemini LE
Planet Ocean 2500 LM on mesh

    IWC
    Inge 3228

That's a somewhat constricted version of my ideal collection. If you added:
    IWC
    AT 3536
    Mark XV

    Sinn
    EZM1
    EZM2

    Seiko
    MM300
    SBBN015 Tuna

I think I would be set for a while.

Difficult to choose, but at first pass I'd say...

    Diver - Hulk
    Chrono - Zenith El Primero
Pilot - IWC Spitfire Mk XV
    GMT - Explorer II
    Dress - Zenith Captain
    Beater - G Shock 5600 Solar Atomic

I'm not a fan of choosing a specific number of watches.

If I have not worn something for a while, and I don't get a "kick" out of it when I do wear it,
then it's time to move it out.

Only six watches. What a nutty concept. I suppose I could try, but ultimately I know I'd not last long before I'd want to push that to eight. Or ten. Actually, a nice even dozen makes a lot more sense.

But six, okay. What would they be? Let's see.

A Submariner of some sort, I'm not a purist or a Rolex fanboy, so the 14060m I already have would suffice. A Seiko MM300 has to be in there, and I already have that too. Now, the other four? How about an Eterna Kontiki IDF, an Omega SM300 (the Watchco version would be fine), a Tutima 5100 chrono (the version with the diver bezel), and a vintage Breguet or Vixa type 20 fly back chrono? Yeah, I've got a mil watch addiction, but those six should scratch most itches for me.

    .
Nutty to me is having £????? Worth of watches sat in a box never being worn!

I could probably go to 2 watches really, if I got a ceramic sub or gmt, and a beater, but I'd like a variety if I'm honest....

I've already reduced my collection by 4 before I even posted this thread.....

Never worn, is different than worn infrequently. I would like to get to the point that I have enough watches (that I love) to wear each one once a month.
