50/50 | half of my watches are quartz!

    Hi all!

Just noticed that half of my watches are quartz watches now! Never thought it would come to this, but as I'm both picky and unfirm -- can't decide which to wear and sometimes it takes ages to align the hands day after day -- quartz watches turned out to be an appropriate choice for me. Love my mechanicals nonetheless...

One Seiko Kinetic is missing, but this is the status quo (sorry, crappy pics)...

    What's your ratio?

    Cheers,

    Andreas

I'm fairly new to collecting and although I do love a good mechanical movement I'm fairly hard going on watches and have destroyed a few from bumps etc so have limited it to only 1 auto, gifted by my wife to me on our wedding day and 4 quartz/digital

    Hmm.

    2 quartz
    3 manual wind
    4 auto

I like having the quartz ones if only for reference when winding the manuals!

It's the mechanism that makes watches so attractive to me. The intricate, delicate movement, a tiny engine. Quartz steals all that magic, so I don't have any.

I think quartz is just as magical as mechanical and I like them for their accuracy and toughness.

I have 5 quartz, 3 autos and 1 hand wind.

    Btw - nice collection OP.

    I'm currently at

    7 autos

4 quartz (but maybe 5 later today)

Of the four, three are analogue and one digital.

40% of my watches are quartz. Can't see why people get all uppity about quartz watches.

  15. #15
    1 quartz - Casio F91
2 automatic - Rolex SubC, Omega vintage
    1 manual - Speedy

Quartz doesn't really interest me but it does the job in my Casio gym watch.

Lots of auto's and only 3 x quartz. - soon to be two when I sell my GS 9f.
The GS is a great watch in terms of super quality and timekeeping, but that's all. I never wear it, so it will have to go soon.

There is a world of great mechanical watches out there, both old and modern. It has to be a particularly special quartz for me to get interested in it.

    Currently
    6 x autos
    1 x handwind
    3 x quartz (kinetic)
    5 x quartz

although after the cull I have in mind this will become
    4 x auto
    1 x handwind
    1 x quartz (kinetic)
    4 x quartz

I don't have a problem at all with quartz (just so long as the seconds hand hits the markers).

I'm currently at 2 quartz, 3 automatic and 1 manual winding watch.
It's definitely good to have a nice watch (or more :)) you can just pick up in the morning without worrying about the need to get it going. On the other hand the autos are not THAT much more complicated to get going and set to the correct time of course.

That's a lot of watches, - and a lot of quartz.
'Can't argue about the Tuna though..

OK, I see, I am not alone!

Indeed, as nice as a decent mechanical is -- and some movements are insane in a positive way -- quartz are perfect grab and go watches.

Wow! A Tuna has recently been added to my list, too ;-)

If you are are passionate about watches, you have to have autos; are not as accurate as quartz, but are purer.

Probably 2 to 1 in flavour of autos but the quartz get at least half the wear. After all, the Oysterquartz is just so much purer than an auto and the GS 9F just works so much better - if you are passionate about watches, you care about such things ;-)

    1 hand wind
3 digital quartz; all radio controlled
2 analogue quartz; 1 radio controlled and the other thermo compensated
7 auto, including a Spring Drive

I have no issue at all with quartz though my preference would be for an added tech like RC or TC as per my collection, ironic really seeing as a bog standard quartz is supposed to be accurate anyway! To be honest I don't fully understand the science and mathematics behind either type of movement so the geek/nerd factor between the two is nonexistent. I appreciate the timekeeping accuracy of a quartz and the craft and beauty of an auto, particularly those with multiple complications.

ETA that I've just read my selection in the "perfect 6" thread, two auto and four quartz from those that I own.

Surely that's 5 quartz and one auto. Spring drive is quartz controlled.

  28. #28
Quartz controlled, mechanically driven. I see what you mean, but I'd categorise it as an auto rather than quartz if I had to choose between one or the other, maybe a hybrid is the more accurate way of describing a SD. I'm guessing this has been done to death!

There is a big discussion about it.
The Spring drive system is only used to adjust the speed of seconds hand, not for the caliber.

12 Quartz, 8 autos and 5 manuals but this matches my preferences these days. Soon i hope to get it down to 11 quartz, 6 autos and 4 manuals, very close to just 20 watches then

Probably about a half of my watches are quartz, but the vast majority that get worn are mechanical.

I have an old quartz Seiko that comes to the gym with me, a couple of Sekondas (that I almost never wear any more), my 'proper' diver which is a Citizen eco-drive and cheap enough for me not to worry about when I dive, a Tissot PRC200, a Citizen AT Skyhawk (which I plan to move on soon) and a new-to-me Breitling B-1 which I wore all last week on a trip to the States (except when I went diving and wore the Citizen).

I'll wear the Breitling a lot I'm sure as I really like it and the Citizen and the old Seiko get regular, but less frequent, use. The others are mostly sitting in boxes, although I always think I should wear the Tissot more as it's a nice watch.

That said, most days I wear my Longines, Omega, Sinn, Smiths or Breitling mechanical watches.

So, near 50:50 of owned watches, more like 90:10 (mech:quartz) of worn watches.

8 Auto's 0 quartz. Though i'd not be averse to owning a quartz if I liked the look of it, I have previously had a Tag quartz which was fine.
