Something from Oris Artelier range?
OK, so I'm hoping to be in a position soon to spend £600 (max) on a new addition to the collection. I've kind of got an Orient Star Retrograde in mind but, before I take the plunge I thought it might be fun to see what else was out there. So, here's what I want and don't want - suggestions welcome!
- No divers. I already have my Sea-Dweller and my Vostok Amphibia. Between them they're pretty much all the diver I need.
- It wants to be mechanical.
- I do like a display back, but this isn't essential
- Controversially I don't think one of our host's watches is for me. I know they're good, but they just don't move me I'm afraid
- I quite like the Junghans Max Bill but it's out of budget and I'm not sure I want plexiglass when the Orient has sapphire
- No Fliegers
- it doesn't have to be new, but if second hand it has to be something that comes up reasonably often.
Any ideas?
Something from Oris Artelier range?
Seen a lovely Hamilton Jazzmaster on SC the other day for £777, maybe he will drop soon if not sold, sorry can't see it at moment.
Sewills Carmania, if I only could, but sold out.
Then Speedbird III gmt.
Sorry mate, but I really like Eddie's watches.

I thought something like this?

Hamilton intra matic, Stowa antea KS both under £600
What about a sinn 556?
I like your original idea. One thing - if the OS is a keeper you will need to think about servicing/repairs. Paul of this parish had a hell of a job servicing one for me recently. Great value that retrograde though....
For myself, I think I would get a vintage Cartier or Tag Heuer.
Couple of decent Stowa choices in that price range if u can stand the wait
Certina DS Powermatic - 2824 base with 80 hour power reserve

Mido Commander:
RRP ~ 600 , may be had for a bit less but not much as there are hardly any suppliers in the UK at the mo. Try House of Hanover off Regent Street, London. They have a brand new concession.
I tried this watch on and it's really nice - stylish and retro. They have it in a silver dial version too, below is slate grey.
That's the one. I don't have anything with a retrograde hand or a power reserve so it ticks two "novelty" boxes. I'd take it off the bracelet and put it on a leather strap - tone it down a bit. Service wise I would get it from Serious Watches in the Netherlands, who are an AD. So for servicing it could go back to them.
Downsides? Not 100% convinced that the face isn't over-textured and a bit too busy. Maybe something like the Hamilton Intamatic looks a bit more grown up. On the other hand, quite by accident I seem to have built a collection without a single ETA movement in it. Nothing against ETA at all - but is now the time to add an ETA, or should I look for yet another niche watch with something else inside?
Thank you all for the great ideas. Lots to think about, and I'm hoping you'll give me more yet!
How about this and brand new, under your budget too
You could pick up a used Damasko DA36/37 for that kind of money. Of course it would still probably look like new too.
F.T.F.A.
Slightly over budget at £630 but my wife bought the ladies version of this over the weekend and I'm really impressed with it.
Tissot luxury automatic COSC.
This, I have one, and a great watch, which you can occasionally pick up at a sale price.

I'd recommend you take a look at something from Ball, perhaps the Fireman which should be within budget second hand. I think its a good bet because a lot of their designs look nice, and at the same time their approach to lume is utterly unique, so at the very least it'll reflect something different in your collection.

I have to agree with that too, if an auto is called for you are not going to get better than one of Eddies
That's smart I tried the silver dial version on last week but it just didn't do it for me the black however certainly looks the part. 80 hour reserve which is impressive they do a certified one too if I'm not mistaken .
+1 on the Visodate is a steal and whilst I walked away without one think I'll be back soon. Just love the silver dial version great modern take on a classic design.
The Longines Hydroconquest can be had for around that money too which is also great vfm.
And why not an Archimede outdoor.
Not too big , not a diver watch ,but a WR correct for swimming.
Well done watch...

No, it's a diver isn't it - the oil filling helps with the water resistance? I know I said no divers, but the oil filling makes it interesting and they are apparently very different to look at. Anyway, rare as hens teeth and beyond my budget so I'm not going to worry about them for this purchase.
Thanks everyone - some very interesting suggestions which I'll follow up. I do like the look of the Schuhren - I had toyed with the idea of a Stowa Marine original at one point, and even got a Catalogue from Dirk Dornbluth last year (the budget for that one went on the Sea-Dweller). I'll also look at Ball, Archimede, Hamilton. I'm not sure about the Tissot - I'm not sure I like the pattern on the side of the case. And I promise I'll take another look at Eddies!
One thing's for sure, the Orient Star is no longer the shoe-in I thought it was going to be!
Hamilton, Junghans MB, Longines, ...
I personally like the MB line from Junghans for around that budget.
Best! Glenn
Junghans would be a good choice.
You can also consider Mido, as mentioned above. They have a lot of interesting models, with relatively high quality and fair prices.

I have this one, it is really great piece.
It is 42mm but there is also 38mm version.
Another nod for the Hamilton intra matic.
Or a longines heritage conquest.
What's the story behind Mido? What movements do they use?
Left field, how about an NB Yaeger?

Used Seamaster quartz???? Mid size at that kinda budget I reckon?
Mido looks terrific. Has anyone got a Mido? What are they like?
Vintage gold Omega......might have to find a few £££ more for a good 'un, though.
Paul
Just adding to the chorus of approval for that Mido, a very pretty thing indeed, I'd be very interested to hear more about it.
They are relatively old company, you can find plenty of their vintage models.
Now they are part of the Swatch group (so they use ETA), I would say they are between Tissot and Omega. Close to Longines but with more limited range of models. Build quality is really good, also value for money.
In this model mechanism is ETA2836 'elabore'.
The Certina DS-1 posted by CaptainHowdy gets my vote but I do also like the Mido.
