£600 - what would you buy?

OK, so I'm hoping to be in a position soon to spend £600 (max) on a new addition to the collection. I've kind of got an Orient Star Retrograde in mind but, before I take the plunge I thought it might be fun to see what else was out there. So, here's what I want and don't want - suggestions welcome!

    - No divers. I already have my Sea-Dweller and my Vostok Amphibia. Between them they're pretty much all the diver I need.
    - It wants to be mechanical.
    - I do like a display back, but this isn't essential
    - Controversially I don't think one of our host's watches is for me. I know they're good, but they just don't move me I'm afraid
    - I quite like the Junghans Max Bill but it's out of budget and I'm not sure I want plexiglass when the Orient has sapphire
    - No Fliegers
    - it doesn't have to be new, but if second hand it has to be something that comes up reasonably often.

    Any ideas?

I like your original idea. One thing - if the OS is a keeper you will need to think about servicing/repairs. Paul of this parish had a hell of a job servicing one for me recently. Great value that retrograde though....

They are nice watches, I agree, and very well made. Just not for me sadly.

I face a similar dilemma to you. I had been thinking that the Speedbird GMT is a no brainer but funnily enough, now the Orient Star retrograde does look like a possibility. Fantastic value for the complications and the dial looks great. I think it looks better in black than white though because of the contrast of the silver hands.

    This review is particularly persuasive!

I like the inta matic, but I can never decide if it's quite "me". The Antea is nice, but I already have a Nomos Tangente!

£600 - what would you buy?

How about this and brand new, under your budget too

You could pick up a used Damasko DA36/37 for that kind of money. Of course it would still probably look like new too.

That is lovely Andy - I saw that in another thread recently. Is that your last one? Do you mind me asking what the movement is?

Slightly over budget at £630 but my wife bought the ladies version of this over the weekend and I'm really impressed with it.

This, I have one, and a great watch, which you can occasionally pick up at a sale price.

I'd recommend you take a look at something from Ball, perhaps the Fireman which should be within budget second hand. I think its a good bet because a lot of their designs look nice, and at the same time their approach to lume is utterly unique, so at the very least it'll reflect something different in your collection.

That's smart I tried the silver dial version on last week but it just didn't do it for me the black however certainly looks the part. 80 hour reserve which is impressive they do a certified one too if I'm not mistaken .

+1 on the Visodate is a steal and whilst I walked away without one think I'll be back soon. Just love the silver dial version great modern take on a classic design.

The Longines Hydroconquest can be had for around that money too which is also great vfm.

Seeing as you already seem to be a bit of a Russian fan, here's a couple of more expensive options:

Denissov Barracuda (other styles of dial available) When I eventually find a second-hand one on ebay I will buy it. Bit too much new for me:

My all time favourite - Poljot Okean:

I have to say the Okean has never really done it for me, but I might do some research on Denissov for another time. This being a resurrected thread the actual £600 is long gone.......

I didn't buy that model in the end...however my wife has the ladies and it's great value.
It was available from the UK Tissot online store....search under their auto COSC section.

I went for this one in the end which was similarly priced.

    Tissot Couturier auto.

Here is a link for the other one though..

And why not an Archimede outdoor.
Not too big , not a diver watch ,but a WR correct for swimming.
    Well done watch...

    Hamilton, Junghans MB, Longines, ...

I personally like the MB line from Junghans for around that budget.

Junghans would be a good choice.

You can also consider Mido, as mentioned above. They have a lot of interesting models, with relatively high quality and fair prices.

I have this one, it is really great piece.
It is 42mm but there is also 38mm version.

They are relatively old company, you can find plenty of their vintage models.

Now they are part of the Swatch group (so they use ETA), I would say they are between Tissot and Omega. Close to Longines but with more limited range of models. Build quality is really good, also value for money.

In this model mechanism is ETA2836 'elabore'.
