You don't get a lot new for £500 these days .
Apologies if this has been posted here before, but I just came across it and was so astounded I had to share.
The 10 best watches under £500 - Top Watches & Brands - GQ.COM (UK)
I think there are 2 watches out of the 10 that I would consider wearing, the Swatch chrono and the Mondaine. No Seiko, no Citizen, no Christopher Ward, no Steinhart, no vintage.... It's almost like it was written by a lazy journo who knows nothing about watches.

Some not very nice watches on there
Should be Top 10 Best Fashion Watches, as that's primarily what they are.
That 'South Lane Urbaner Forever Rebel' looks like a £10 Ebay 'special'..If they used the right sized hands it might improve things to say er £12 worth..
I suppose if you're just looking at new and RRP, then the choice is a bit limited - we're used to the idea of buying second hand and waiting for a sale.
The first 2 are nice, as are the Mondaine and Braun and the Swatch is OK. So the other 5 are yucky.
Oh, none I would wear though.
Fashion watches in a fashion magazine, not really surprising! The Dieter Rams design is nice but looks better as a clock, as does the Mondaine.
My mum knows more about watches than that GQ 'journalist'.
The Mondaine is ok, but the rest are nasty.
Any number of Steinharts or Eddie's own available well under that price. All with proper Swiss auto movements.
Bunch of 4r5e.
What a cra?p website. It took me about a minute to figure out how to change the page on my mobile browser. Must be paid product placement although the swatch and braun are OK for that price.
Bloody hell. I liked 3 out of the 10, the Braun, swatch and mondaine. The rest were awful, real cheap looking too
That Jack Spade watch is horrific.
Are we being serious? Where are Eddies, where is Steinhart. These people are uninformed clowns!!
I think some are ok - but no Precista or Smiths - it doesn't seem they were that clued up on watches ;-)
Christ Alive! They should be ashamed to publish that.
That is terrible
I'll admit I hadn't heard about the Mondaine Stop2Go movement. It seems kind of cool, but utterly pointless in a watch. Quite clever on a railway clock but nothing more than a gimmick on the wrist
Rose gold was the other big story at Baselworld 2013, and this season Californian watch brand Nixon are doing some admirable work at making the metal more affordable.
That lot is just tat, do you really need to be a member of a forum like this to see the blindingly obvious!? that all of those watches are garbage! (except the Mondaine, thats average and I would have one - in the sale).
You seem to think this is journalism; articles like this are to reward advertisers. It is the same with 'the top ten shaving creams', 'the 5 best new deoderants', 'the best briefcases', etc. There is no testing and there is no integrity - if LVMH, Swatch Group, Clinique, etc., spend money with the magazine then their products will be in the article.
Simply awful..... Even my wife who shows no interest in my watches could do better than that!
What a load of old tut
Would you expect anything to the contrary in a fashion magazine? The only surprise for me was the lack of Michael Kors.
I did like this comment on their selection "Are you f***ing kidding? Where are Seiko, Citizen, Steinhart, Timex, Christopher Ward, Casio... "
Ooo Dear me, having a giraffee. Geeza. I don't mind the Mondaine but would not pay near 500 pounds
I thought that most of the watches were predictable fashion tat, and the images were slow to load.
So I clicked on the "Girls" tab. Which was much better.
Although no trees were harmed during the creation of this post, a large number of electrons were greatly inconvenienced.
I would not put it necessarily "lazy", rather "arrogant" or "illiterate"...
Worst Braum they could have picked. Not that they are actually Braun mind, just th name being used under licence by Zeon.
I'm unfamiliar with at least half of the brands listed there; I never knew my watch brand knowledge was so limited. What happened to stuff like Tissot and Hamilton (or did they all increase their prices over £500)?
i like mondaine so no prb there.
perhaps the braun and swatch (i'd need to hear the click though) if you put a gun to my head.
you'd only get the rest on my cold dead wrist...
Apart from the Mondaine, which was just luck, the 'journo' should stick to reviewing earrings and lipstick.
Not one worth saving from the bin when the battery runs out.
"Preppy American Nato Straps"
Oh dear.
Dave
At least the Braun and Mondaine have some design integrity. The rest I would not give my 10 year old to beat in the playground.
Most of those shown are no where near £500, so why even bother with the title of "best 10 under £500"?
Proof that the author may know about fashion but sweet Fanny Adams about watches.
There's something about the simplicity of the Uniform Wares (No. 2 of the 10) that appeals to me, though at £280 I'd probably spend my money on an old Omega or something similar.
The big "4" and "8" unbalance the Swatch for me, and the Braun is much too cluttered and the hands are too short (though I normally like Dieter Rams' designs).
Different strokes for different folks and all that but an interesting definition of the word "best". Pretty much all of them look horrendous and most are cheap throw-away fashion tat. For the money I'd expect Seiko, Tissot and Hamilton to be on that list.
Nothing that i would put my money on from that list
Every once in a while a list like this appears that really rather defies comprehension.
I had only heard of three of those brands - Braun, Swatch and Mondaine (and I really don't like the idea of the "second hand running fast for 58 seconds" of the minute.
Pretty much the entire list was nothing more than branded junk I wouldn't pay a fiver for from Argos. I doubt the writer has actually had his hands on any of them, and had probably just created the list from his first Google search. He clearly knows nothing about watches at all.
So clever my foot fell off.
Terrible.
As someone who only spends 500 or less on watches (I did once push the boat out to 700) I can say with absolute certainty that there is so much more to be had in this price range.
OP, you called it In the first post. A lazy journalist who knows nothing about watches. I would see Archimede as a gaping omission in a list of watches at this price and quite a few smaller German brands would surely be better than the barbie and ken shite offered up in the article
