    Incoming GO PC

I was waiting for the arrival, scheduled on Fedex tracking for Monday. I noticed however that this morning it had arrived at their depot only 5 miles away. So why wait. I called them and went to collect it.

I have struggled with Perpetual calendars. It is a complication I definitely want in my collection. However I do have a problem with fixed mesh perpetual calenders and it is one linked with the basic mortality fears (probably age associated) of wearing a machine with an innate capacity to know time well beyond my own potential to know it. I know this is terribly childish and stupid but it bothers me.

My first PC was an outstandingly beautiful JLC in RG. I loved it, though at 37mm it was a little small for my large wrist. I lived with the size issue but the mortality issue bothered me. So I sold it and bought my second PC. This was the G O perpetual Calendar in SS. I loved the watch. It solved the mortality thing by not being a fixed mesh PC. By this I mean it is possible to individually set all of the registers. At 40mm it also solved the size issue. I didn't keep it long. Although it was a magnificent watch, because it was made in SS I felt that a non precious metal, casing a complication as magnificent as a perpetual Calendar was irreverent. Such magnificent work of horology IMO should be revered such that we case it in precious metal. So the GO PC almost perfect as it was got sold. Then the JLC came back for another try. This time though the JLC was not getting worn at all. I think I was starting to overcome the Mortality thing, but meanwhile I had bought some big watches and now it felt even smaller.
I considered and almost bought a Moser Perpetual Calendar ( I have a Moser Monard and love it) but I couldn't get past the idea the a perpetual calendar without a moonphase is only doing three quarters of the job. ( You must all be thinking For Christ sake get a life and I am not saying you are wrong)
Then This came up. Possibly the best IMO and most readable PC, with Moonphase in Platinum ( so we have the reverence sorted ).
In almost every way it is the same watch as the one I had in SS. However until recently it was GO's policy to finish the movements in their precious metal watches a little differently from the SS models. To this end the beveling , which was already magnificent , is even better and on the lower plate the movement benefits from four screwed gold chatons not normally present on the stunning 100 series movement. Oh and the little dyed Chalcedony (Onyx) cabochon on the winder.
It leaves me only to tell you that the deal was struck with Joshua Ganjei of European Watch Co in Boston MA. They handled the deal like gentlemen and made every effort to make it as easy as possible. Thus I recommend them very highly.

Here is the watch (Black dial watches are an absolute bu$$er to photograph)

A beauty, Tim - I do love GO's take on the PC and this version has to be the ultimate. Congratulations.

Thank you for the strap Tony

Sensational Tim you must be more than happy with what can only be described one of the most beautiful GOs I have seen, enjoy.

  13. #13
    Very very nice, Tim!

I've said it before, but the GO PC has to be one of the cleanest and most legible around.

That must have some reassuring heft to it. I tried on a RG one, and it felt incredibly solid, Pt must be fantastic.

Platinum is around 60% heavier than gold add to that the 95% concentration rather than 75% I am not a mathemutation but I am guessing at least 70% heavier.

    Nice catch, enjoy!

I can also recommend the European Watch Company on Newbury Street in Boston, well worth a visit and they are indeed a pleasure to deal with.

    Absolutely beautiful, Tim.

With all the complications it's understandable that it would never be an ultra thin, but looking at the side on pic, what sort of thickness does it come in at?

It is 13mm thick. As a comparison the JLC Ultra thin PC is 9.2mm

    Great pickup.

It really is a magnificent looking watch.

Certainly no heffalump then, and at 40mm I imagine it's quite balanced.

    The more platinum the better

Lovely watch. It really is amazing. I have to say IMHO it's a nicer option than the Moser PC. Great choice, well done. I'm sure you'll enjoy it but, if not, there are many queuing at SC willing to take it off your hands...

I'll do the maths for you. You are a very, very long way out with your metal specific gravities :)

Platiumum at 21.6sg and 95% concentration with iridium at 22.4sg and 5% concentratioin gives us an alloy of 21.64sg.

Gold at 19.3sg at 75% concentration plus 25% copper (I like rose gold and yes I know there should be 4% silver) at 8.9sg gives us an alloy of 16.7sg

The gold alloy density is therefore 77% of the platinum alloy.

Platinum alloy is therefore 28% heavier than gold alloy, not 70%.

OP, lovely watch, GO's moonphase is lovely!

As a general point about the feel of different materials, it often surprises me how we seem to have a sense of density. Even without looking at an object, by simply holding it, we soon seem to be able to guage its density e.g. rings and other jewelry feel very different in gold, and especially platinum (I guess this is one of the appeals). There's definitely something to be said for a watch with a precious metal case, as even if it looks a lot like steel (Pt or WG), it feels so much better.

I think you're right Rob, and it's something I really didn't appreciate until I got my white gold Daytona. Aside from the feel, the way it reacts to light is also quite different.

Simply beautiful partly due to it's simplicity ( which seems a stupid thing to say about such a complication!). Can I ask where you saw and tried on a GO? Were you in the UK or did you just 'happen' to be passing Germany!
