Thread: Scammer trying to scam me :)

  1. #1

Scammer trying to scam me :)

Placed a WTB for an Enzo Mechana on this forum & the other big worldwide watch forum.
Received a mail from someone called (Roy Shelley ) look out for the name in any dealings !
After a quick look on google it seems that this ( Roy ) is quite a well known scammer.
So I've decided to have a little play with him , all email correspondence will be posted below :
If anyone has any idea's how I can string this clown along any further let me know.
At least I can say I've sent the money so he has a wasted trip to the postie.

Alright Sean, can you email me a scanned copy of the receipt?

    Hi Roy,

Why do you need a scanned copy are the details not correct ?
    I really hope there's not a problem ?

    Kind regards,

    Sean

    From: Roy Shelley

so i can show it to them at the money gram office.

    Hi Roy,

Ok no problem I’ll send over a pic as soon as my camera is charged :)

We seem to have the same taste in watches ! I’m also looking out for a chunky diver for my brothers birthday , do you have any other watches for sale.

Money gram’s easier to use than I thought I may start using it instead of paypal.

    Kind regards,

    Sean

Is it too late to ask for tons of photos and insist on a face-to-face meeting? The former will eat up tons of his time as he searches the web for images.

yeah he will have downloaded the pictures as a set from somewhere - ask for an angle he hasn't provided (and he likely hasn't got the photo).

There must be a complete lack of introspection and/or a warped sense of entitlement. In other words, "I've been dealt a bad hand, so it's OK to steal a little from those who were dealt a better hand."

Imagine, on one's deathbed, looking back on one's "career" as a scammer.

In life always remember that members of the Human Race are capable of anything as history proves.
The lack of understanding of the meaning of the English language compounds the problem.
How often is unworn really well worn, unmarked badly marked, almost invisible clearly seen.
Thank G.. for the decent people out there!!

You could at some point "admit" that you have now changed your mind and no longer want it ..... but you do have a friend who is very interested - someone else can then start the process again - could keep it going for weeks and months!!

Is there no way to time his appearance at post office? Might be able to arrange reception committee!

Can't wait to see his reply to my last mail :)

He could at least have used an extant address. Poor effort.

So how does the scam work, once he gets a picture of the receipt? Does he claim to be the sender and ask for his money back? In which case, could he be based anywhere in the world?

You may want to change your postal name so that it begins with a K, at least on here, in this public viewable section of the forum.

Never heard of midleton in Dublin either. I'm guessing money gram need proof of address as part of anti money laundering regs? Maybe you should notify the authorities?

That's because it's in Co Cork, but it would be a known name due to the whiskey it produces.

Have I missed something here but I thought this forum was fairly "safe" based on the posting and time requirements before anyone can access the sales/wtb section. Does this mean that someone has gone to the trouble of posting the required numbers posts and waiting 2 months just to get an opportunity to scam forum members or has he accessed the wtb ad via another source.
If it's via this forum it is a worrying thought.

Waiting a couple of months and posting 50 times isn't much effort for the potential of getting £500. Also this could have been on WUS where there is no such requirements.

What a total scumbag though. Such a horrible nasty way to live.

not sure which forum it was but this forum is pretty safe.

If you were to put up a want to buy on this forum and got a reply from a member that had just signed up, with no feed back in heroes and villains, I think you would be on your guard, be it this forum or elsewhere.

yes it's safer here than other places but you still have to keep your wits about you.

I thought that would be the case. I'm after an SD at the moment and have been contacted by a couple of forum members, a few searches on their previous activity on here seems to give a good level of reassurance but I guess it's still a bit of a bottle tester if it comes to sending a substantial sum off to a complete stranger

Not good mate and lucky escape.

Someone recently tried to scam me here in Australia on Gumtree for a Rolex GMT. I was ready to drive 4 hours to meet the guy, spoke with his "wife" and hand over the cash when I decided to have another look on Google images. I found all of his "photos" on line which he had stolen from a U.S. sale on WUS. I sent him the link and asked him about it and he pulled the sale and vanished. I am not sure what he was planning on doing when I arrived but it was a warning for me, that even after 10 years of buying and selling, it's still easy to get scammed.

I was looking at buying a watch on eBay, got a bad feeling about the transaction having exchanged emails, in the end I asked him to email me photos of the watch on top of either a recent utility bill or current newspaper to establish he owns the watch,,, never heard from him again and watch withdrawn

    same guy :)

Answering on my WTB at WUS from roydshelley591@gmail.com

    Hi crnispot,

I have a PR516 for sale in near mint shape and condition as seen in
the attached photos. I'm asking $350 shipped for it. I will be
shipping from Indiana, and will ship via UPS or FedEx whichever you
prefer and shall accept payment via Money gram as my PayPal is
currently dormant. What's your shipping address?

    thanks,
    Roy.

    ...

asked for a dial photo with 9:53 on the dial and my name on a piece of paper.... no answer. :)

As soon I saw Moneygram, I knew it was a scam.

The same answered a WTB ad that I had for an obscure Omega part. He claimed to be in the US though. The bit that amazed me was that he managed to find a photo of what I was looking for although I couldn't find the same in a search of the web.
I have never used WU but I thought that once funds were paid to "Shelley" he can collect anywhere in the world. Is that correct?
