    New NATO watch?

I was approached by an Italian designer who had an idea for a watch. He's tried to get it made but the 300 minimum quantity makes it impossible to do so he asked if I was interested. I like his design very much, although some minor changes will need to be made and it will not be branded with his name. I think it would make a good replacement for the PRS-10, using the Ronda 715Li.

or possibly a version with a simple turning bezel for timing?

I like that design... but can the 715li be sourced with a date wheel orientated suitably for inclusion?

Actually, isn't the 715li difficult to source at all at the moment?

I like that Eddie, a simple design yet highly original, I also like the crown at 12. Will this have NATO on the dial and if so as a brand or a model?

Interesting design. I agree that a rotating bezel would fit nicely. A date wouldn't be a bad idea either IMO.

I'd guess the idea of having a brand logo that looks the same if you flip it upside down is so that that becomes a matter of personal choice .. would make more sense at the bottom for me and I love the design. Personally prefer it as is rather than with a bezel.

EDIT! OK I can see that doesn't quite make sense given the difference in the relative position within the hour of the hour hand, between the 6 and 12 positions. I guess it's still a choice for a manufacturer though.

Love it , don't know why there aren't more watches with a crown at 12. Big yes to the rotating bezel, and a plea for titanium!
Good luck everybody. Have a good one.

    YES!!

Question How do you turn the crown ?

Excuse my ignorance in matters crown-related but how do you turn the crown with it at 12 ? Is there sufficient room to grab both sides, or do you have to take of the nato to adjust it ? or is the crown sort of "rolled" across the top with one finger.

I do like the look of that but preferably as it is without any bezel versions etc. Keep it clean and plain, I would probably get one.

    -edit-

    And please, no date!

Thats a good point, looks like a flaw in the design to me. Unlike a normal bullhead style watch, where the strap folds out of the way, it looks here like it will not be possible to grip the crown on both sides because of the fixed lugs and the strap, if its a screw down crown, which would befit a name like the NATO watch, wouldn't it put undue pressure on the crown stem if you are only able to push it and turn it by added pressure from one angle/direction?

It also looks a lot like the crown would get snagged in the nylon weave of the NATO strap, especially if you used a strap that was too thick.

Good looking watch though, lets hope these things are not a problem, and can easily be resolved.

+1. No date though as it would mar the symmetry created by having the crown at twelve o'clock. I like the idea of a titanium case and I'm neutral on a turning bezel.

Just out of interest, would having a turning bezel introduce any more manufacturing issues on a titanium case than a steel one?

It's nice but the question remains - what brand name is this watch coming under? The Precista name doesn't seem right for a 12 o clock crown watch.

Not if the date was anywhere on the 12-6 axis ;-)

Yes, I did think of that - after posting, of course. Trouble is I automatically think of the date being at 3 o'clock. My preference for no date still stands though.

I think it look really good - probably works better without the bezel. I think a small date window at 6 o'clock would be ideal

Reminds me of the contra for some reason . Would look great on a GGB type strap with a dedicated OEM buckle in the same as the case material ( did I mention titanium yet ?) , a bit like the old Badgerbones buckle in metal. That would be special . Keep the dial simple. maybe just a discreet / stealth type logo like the 'Everest' on the Everest . SMiths Field Watch anyone?
Good luck everybody. Have a good one.

I like the design as is, no need for the bezel. But, I am curious about the crown issue. How will it work with a NATO strap?

The pictures posted at the top of the thread are of a real watch, a prototype has already been produced. The strap doesn't appear to interfere with the crown in this picture.

That's a cleverly designed and smart looking thing. I like the simplicity of the design. If it's going to be a practical field watch, would you include a date as you did on the PRS-10?

If it did have a date, it would be at 3. I know the movement is rotated 90 degrees but the standard date wheel will work at 3. My only doubts about the dial design is that there's minimal lume and for a mil-style watch, there needs to be more.

Lack of lume would be a problem, I assume it's not a big problem to add more?

I like it a lot, Eddie. Even better, would be a "Black Ops" version in black PVD with red or orange dial highlights, like the name and the second hand perhaps.

Good to hear about the lume. I'd prefer the plain version without a rotating bezel, though probably not an issue for me either way.

What about the crystal? If I'm seeing correctly, the pics show a flat crystal? Is domed acrylic out of the question?

If the crown was at '6' with a timing bezel and a date at '3', it would almost be a ZRC Grands Fonds homage.

With bezel and "interesting hands". Bigger plots for the lune too. No date thank you. Titanium would be an interesting choice too. Bring it on.

    Precista?

Would be interesting to see it in profile, as it's not clear how a true "NATO-style" strap would sit on a watch with lugs like that. Actually, I think I've made similar comments to about the recent copy of the Z.R.C. Etanche Grands Fonds.
