17C 'Mission Timer'?

Still in search of the ultimate work beater, I miss my EZM-1 but prices are too high to wear one as a beater.
Eddie any chance of something like this? Perhaps a limited run like the Goldbirds?
I'm no photoshop wizard so if anyone can refine these please do!

Those are outstanding! I would certainly consider one if they were available.

Very clever!

:)

The top one is a very clean design and would make a really unusual watch.

[At the moment I "need" 8) a watch that can time short intervals clearly. All I need is to be able to time 90s, 2 min or 3, 6, 9 min in a fuss free fashion and then reset and start again. I use a stopwatch now, but a wrist-borne solution would be good!]

I didn't have a firm opinion at first, and thought about it for a day ... the idea is ingenious. Subdued date needed, of course, and a stronger differentiation of the indices (emphasized 3, 6, 9 and 12), and a bi-directional bezel, and you may have quite a winner at hand.

Great imagination, Gunscrossed! :D
Cheers,

I agree with you, it's a wonderful idea! I wouldn't buy one, as I'm fortunate to own a EZM-1, but I'm sure there'd be a market for that watch!

Wonder if you can "loose" the unwanted secondary hand mountings on that movement? Tried to get to the tech drawings but can't remember how I got around the ETA tech support login PITA before ?

Hmmm, like the idea. But with a bidirectional aviation bezel (possibly GMT, but *bidirectional*, which is THE distinction between a diver and an aviation watch) and date in the classic position at 3 o'clock. In aviation, true on-board stopwatches tend to be just one hour, so this would be a true aviation timer. I'm reflecting on the crown position; having it this way to the left might just be a tad more efficient when you have your left arm low, as when you sit in a fighter cockpit. It would be less of an advantage once you lift your arm somewhat (at the time of launch in a balloon, I have my hands on the burners, thus above my head). I'm not sure which I would prefer.
A great option for such a timer would be a flyback function, of course. 'Fly 90 seconds at heading 240 at speed 300, then turn sharp right to heading 330 for 60 seconds...' The extra second you'd need to zero the watch and start it again would cover a distance of 150 metres, just about. Enough to fly into a hill or miss the centreline of a landing strip in the dark (and in competition ballooning, I can think of a few task combinations where a flyback function would be handy as well...).
I know, I know, most of these mission timers wold only be used to time the trips from desk to coffee machine. :P But for the rare pilot who is also a WIS, doing this watch right would be a real help.

Don't forget "LIMITED EDITION" and "200 M"
And if you give me one, you can put "Military Issue" on the back, but hurry, I am a civilian again in less than 3 months! :)
I think that the mock up looks great.

Can someone post a pic of the "Mission timer" ?

I would love to see some sort of GMT function (bezel) for traveling if this was ever created. I know the DN-GMT is in the works, but I'd rather travel with a beater.

This is so much fun! :D

Thanks for the feedback guys, the idea was really to make it as simple as possible using the existing 17c, the top version (which was what I prefer) would I guess only require a new dial and the chrono sub dial functions removing.

I like it - as a left hander, wearing it on my right wrist, this would suit me very well.

I'm an early adopter and have a 17C, but for a new buyer, it would be a tough call between 17C and 17MT.

21. #21
Now that idea is ingenious - I would buy one :D

IMO it should have the Precista as is and a discreet "Gunscrossed" above 6. - A tribute to the genious who came up with the idea and it would suit the mill-incluenced watch to boot if you ask me. Sort of a tribute to the fact many here influence the designs from the get go.

GeoffD,

Out of curiosity, can you add a black date wheel with yellow #'s?

I wonder how that would look?

Impossible. Once you have seen how much time is required for the chronograph hands to return to zero on a quartz movement, the issue becomes moot. :)

Don't know anything about pilots needs i.e. Flyback, but the movement does have one very nice feature that hasn't got talked about much; you can set the "0" point of the chrono hands to wherever you want and therefore operate on a "countdown" basis as well as the normal count-up 8)

Geoff - how does this work? I'm away from home so no instructions to hand[ or watch, but I'll try this when I get home]

It's on the instruction sheet. Basically, by pressing the relevant pushers with the crown at p1 or p2 you can set any of the chrono hands to wherever you want. 8)

I don't like the yellow date ... the black date is acceptable. I removed the marks on the bezel for the first fours and also removed the circled L ... to my eye, the cleaner the better ... remember EZM1.

... also, I feel the Precista logo needs to be a tad lower.

I agree John.

Maybe red instead of yellow could be a option as well.

This would distinguish the watch from the chrono version.

Yes, you're right about the position of "Precista" John.
I could live without the date (definitely not a red date!). I felt the circle L helped to orientate your eye to the dial but again this is probably not necessary.

The mission timer would be the PRS-17-C chronograph without the sub-dials. I can't see any other way of retaining the seconds counter and 60 minute accumulator unless of course I came across a stash of 5100s 8) . That being the case, the mission timer would cost the same as the chrono. I suppose everybody expected it to be cheaper?

There's a couple of designs I like. The date wouldn't be a problem in a "lefty" but being as the movement is rotated 120 degrees, the "start" & "reset" buttons would be reversed and a constant seconds (if required) would be at the 12 position (novel).

Any deviation from ?the standard? tends to cost more.

A running seconds at 12 will spoil the whole effect.

I expected it to cost around the same or a more depending on further mods - using the same movement with subdials hidden / relevant parts removed. I must admit I hadn't thought of the reversed pusher actions but I don't think it matters.

Definitely wouldn't be so keen if it had subseconds, even at 6, and it just wouldn't look right at 12.

46. #46
To keep it simple, could you just fit the dial from the 17 A/Q?

Good work Geoff, that's exactly the sort of thing I had in mind, can you do a version with red in all the places that are yellow and with red Precista and circle L ?

The big attraction to this one is to increase its chances of creation.
By using the existing PRS-17 dial, Eddie wouldn't have to create a minimum order qty dictated by having a new dial made. It would then be "just" ( ) a question of modifying the movements.
.......... Would it Eddie?...........

 :D
