Looks nice and no, the watch is not too small it's just right. Well done on getting it restored and keeping it in the family.
May it bring you many happy years until you pass it on to your son.
I've mentioned before that my dad gave me his Rolex 1600 Datejust when he moved into assisted living. At some point before my mom bought it for him 20 years or so ago, it had been converted from its original all-steel to two-tone steel and gold. Dad was more than happy for me to return it to all steel.
The work was done by ABC Watchwerks in Los Angeles. They polished the case, overhauled the movement and replaced the balance staff and crystal and pressure tested it. They swapped out the linen dial, gold hands, crown and bezel for steel, as well as the two-tone Jubilee for a steel Oyster. It arrived yesterday and I couldn't be happier. It really is like having a brand new watch.
While I can certainly understand that some people prefer something larger than 36mm, it's still hard to imagine that this is "too small":
So far it's running +10 seconds after 24 hours, but I'll give it time to settle in.
Now I just have to get used to the tinkle of a vintage Oyster.

36mm is the 'right' size for a Rolex IMO. This watch is superb; regardless of the restoration cost I`m sure it was worthwhile.

Thanks, Paul. They took the gold parts in part exchange, and gave me a fair price for the refinish and overhaul, plus a reasonable price for the Oyster with the exchange of the Jubilee taken into account. Total out-of-pocket for me was less than the cost of a full service and Oyster, so it felt more than fair.
Plus the man I dealt with, Advi, was extremely pleasant and communicative. He made a special trip to the shop on Saturday to make sure it got shipped out as soon as it was ready. At one point when we were talking he said, "We're enthusiasts, so we want to see everything done right."
Lovely watch restored very nicely - well done.
It's great when you get such good customer service especially for a watch as important as this.
As for your son, I am sure you can remind him of his preference for chocolate over a nice vintage Rolex when he turns 21!
That looks great! You know you're in good hands with Dalton. Shame he's US based for us Brits.
Why hasn't my old man got any Rolex!! :( my mum has so my sisters score!! but my old mans only watch is a birth year 1947 Omega I bought him!! :)
Beautiful watch by the way and your right I always thought 36mm was too small as I am a pretty big fella but its not!! 36mm looks just about right on all but the largest gorilla!!

Looks fantastic! Would love to own a watch that my father had owned and used for two decades...
Looks great, so much nicer than TT.
"I looked with pity not untinged with scorn upon these trivial-minded passers-by"
That's a great looking watch. a classic brought back to life...lovely
Lovely indeed. I sometimes tire of seeing other models, but a nice steel DJ is always eye candy for me.
Wow. Nice.
These restoration topics are always nice to read. I did similar excercise with my dad's Speedmaster a while ago.
All the best to your dad as well. :)

Looks fantastic, really nice restoration work.
Well done getting your Dad's old watch refurbished.
A lovely heirloom.
Cheers,
Neil.
Hi, Tony. I've checked it against the serial number list before but ever since having a child, I can no longer remember numbers. That space of my brain is now filled with information about Ninjago. IIRC, it's from around 1970. I checked to see if by chance it was a birth year watch for me (1965), but it's not.
A very nice piece. Wear it with pride.
Very nice.
One of the reasons why I like vintages.
