IIRC Rolex cancelled the "debts" (i.e. the bills) of the British PoW officers after the war as a gesture of goodwill.
Which makes it even nicer.

I can't help finding it remarkable that during WWII POWs could buy goods and have them shipped to the camps. I guess it was another time. I also find it strange to (but not illogical) to think that Swiss manufacturers were selling time pieces and movements to both Allied and Axis countries and personnel. I suppose its easy to think that in a time of war there is a very definite split between the combatants and their countries, but the more I read about warfare it appears there is always contact between people at all levels even if the conflict is particularly bitter. It seems to me that it makes it all the more tragic that people choose to fight in the first place.
Harry, I think there's always people profiting from war - and often from both sides at the same time.
Switzerland must have been an interesting place in 1939-45: spies, merchants, dealers, diplomats, refugees - and a lot of money / contacts / documents / deals. Like Rick's bar in Casablanca -- "only more so."
Keeping it neutral suited both sides.

As a military man myself, I know the pain of marching 40 or 50km. 95km is a killer under any circumstance. They must have been mentally really strong to have survived the march.
