    Your favourite local curry house

It seems to me we have many curry connoisseurs on this forum and it would make an interesting resource to mention our favourite curry houses and their locations. I'll start, the Gurkha in Winchester isn't even 200 metres from the railway station but serves a fantastic curry:

    Akbars - Rotherham,
Not terribly local - about 10 miles away but quality wise worth the journey.
Over 4 years never a disappointing meal.

Monty’s, They are a local institution. (There used to be one in Kingston as well, not sure if it is still there)

Papyaya for Sri Lanken, I am in there at least once if not twice a month. Handy as it is a short stroll from my local pub.

Monty's is still there in Kingston, personally I'm not a fan and it is usually empty and could be there are better branches around.

    Papaya is excellent though.

The Agrah in Cleethorpes. 6 or 7 miles away but a great meal every time.
Definitely still exists in the 1970s though!

My fathers favourite place. They live off from Chilbolton Avenue, so not far at all.

    https://the-tamarind-tree.co.uk

My favourite in the area. This one is in Wokingham, Koush the owner is a brilliant host & the food is amazing.

We are there fortnightly (or weekly if being bad!), and he brings us samples of the staff curry for the evening to try. Hes so passionate about the accompaniments for the popadoms as they make their own tamarind sauce & coriander coconut powder alongside the usual mint sauce, onions and chutney.

Damn, wish I was going there tonight.

Edit - online menu is shocking as its line by line by curry type by meat vs the way it is done in the restaurant itself.

Not local to me, but I was in there a few weeks ago, I`ve got friends who moved up there:

Bengal Spice in Redcar, best curry I`ve had in a long while!

Lots of investment going into the Redcar area. Good to see people moving in, when many years ago the traffic was more likely in the opposite direction.

Off topic'ish, but a few Indian restaurants I've been to in the last decade have gone all 'racy', swanky table settings, minimalist art on the wall with seemingly no relevance to India/ Pakistan, so, quite sterile ambience. But, in my youth, Indians had flock wallpaper, burgundy usually, and those booths with curtains. Menu was 'typed' and slid in to the plastic menu wallet thingy.
Every curry I ever had was delicious.
    Reminisce over.

    I did Akbars Middlesborough recently.

The high was the best tandoori lamb chops I have ever had.

The low was the worst chicken jalfrezi I have ever had. There was egg in the jalfrezi sauce. Who the feck puts egg in a jalfrezi?

BYO turns me right off. Nothing beats a proper pint of kingfisher with a curry.

Our previous local, that was much more local moved to BYO beer but still sold wine - so had a licence. Their barrels were so low the brewery increased the price and management decided to no longer purchase from them.

So many people got caught out by this, used to take a few extra cans to give out when I realised the table nearby hadnt brought any.

Their next sin was prioritising take away over restaurant as we were a captive audience. Naans too late, and the final straw was a mainly raw one that was already 10mins too late. That was our last trip there!

The other village one is like sitting in a morgue, its just awful. Weirdly the Wokingham one can be empty apart from us, and is still full of life.

We like a 6pm curry so we still have the evening for some down time at home, a good film and a relax after the week.

Never been disappointed with the Odiham Spice in Odiham, Hampshire.

I noticed today that Cove Tandoori in Farnborough has gone, which was a favourite of ours years ago l.

That menu reads great, so different to the usual curry house. Not too far away, so might have to give it a go.

Have been a few times with TD friends, although good and I like the BYO, if it's just me and the Mrs I'll always take the Anarkali, but with some good suggestions popping up, I'll be sure to be giving them a try in the near future

Completely forgot about this one, have been a few times and is very good, interesting spot for a restaurant right on the Ace of Spades roundabout, but don't let that put you off!

As there seem to be a few of us very local to me, I'll suggest Kayal in West Byfleet. It's Keralan, so the curries, breads etc. are different from the regular curry house menus. Not had a dud dish in several visits.

I've been told Dastaan in West Ewell is fantastic too but not made it there yet.

This is a very traditional "British" Indian restaurant local to us and has always been 5star worthy in the 20 years or so we've been going - great food, service and value.

We have been to Montys a few times.
Our favourite used to be Clay Oven, just a few doors away. But they shut a few years ago.
Another decent one is Laguna - just along the road. Never quite clicked with Montys - but may give it another try soon!
