    Incoming IWC Grail

Got my hands on this today (and will never let it go!)

The first IWC Portuguese model (ref 325, cal.98)
    43mm diameter
Bought from the son of the original owner.
The watch is all original! And the case keeps the original finish.

This one will be a keeper!

    Nice one.

A few days back i was in one of the open markets in lisbon ( the biggest one, I forget the name) and there was a guy with a nice collection who had one of these.

If you dont mind, where did you get it from

I got this from a non watch collector that inherited the watch. Not from Lisbon but from Oporto.

That oozes class, really lovely piece!! 43mm, what a whopper for a vintage watch.

I have a 40mm Ulysse Nardin from the 40s which I thought was huge!

    Spectacular.

Lovely size for an older piece too.

A ref. 325, the mythical grail of all IWC collectors! Huge congrats, a truly lovely piece. I had the pleasure of handling one once; it just oozes class, one of the best vintage watches there is.

    Wow, Fantastic!

Congratulations! To an IWC collector this is as good as it gets. The ref 325 is basically impossible to find and if you find it anyway impossible to pay for :-)
Your sample looks absolutely fantastic. Enjoy!

Probably the nicest vintage watch I've seen, 43mm a huge bonus as I know how frustrating it can be setting your sights in a great vintage piece only to find out its 31mm! Enjoy

The IWC Portuguese 5441 Jubilee from 1993 (below) has almost the same dial of mine (!)

    Nice!!!

Proper big knob on it too.

And a fully eaten 6 (rather than the half-eaten 6 and 12 on the chrono - pet hate of mine).

Amazingly beautiful. As has been mentioned the size is really interesting, given that most vintage out there (that you can get your hands on) are rather small.
On another note, I'm very much looking forward to get myself my first IWC..

Looses about 2 min per day, but I am taking it to IWC for authentication and a service.
Here are some photos with a new croc bracelet, 18k solid gold IWC buckle and a new crystal (my watchmaker have a collection of NOS acrylic crystals with more than 50 years!).

That's great. Very interesting to see the clear link to the current models, they really are very faithful to the original style.

All you need to do now is get a Dremel on that case, chuck that pimply dial & those rusty hands away and ask your local repairer to fit a decent dial & some new hands. (You could try your nearest Timson's.) I reckon diver's style would look great.

Spend a few quid and you'll have a decent watch there, mate.

This one will go to Schauffhausen for authentication and only a movement service.

Just received my Portuguese 325 from a Service at IWC!
The certificate confirms that is a real ref 325! :)

    Congratulations, Joao!!!

Fantastic watch and great to hear that everything is original - even the crown seems to be still the first one and now with the movement service it will be a great watch to wear in its natural Portuguese habitat ;-)

    Cheers,
    Christian

    Simply wonderful, a true classic.

Was the service expensive? Some close ups of the dial before and after would be educational.

    Thanks for sharing....viva!

Well it was! I paid 750€ for movement service only and 200€ for the certificate. IWC suggested to to an "intervention" on the dial for 550€ and replacement of the hands for 30€ that I declined.

I only wanted the movement service and certificate. I also asked not to polish it! Basically the wah came the same cosmetically!

The resemblance between the calibre 83 on the left and the calibre 98 on the right is remarkable, isn't it?

Almost as if IWC put a pantograph on the 83 drawings and just enlarged them.

    Sorry, KavKav. You're right to be horrified. There's a 'p' in Timpson's.

... that would have been a bit of a pointless exercise - as the Cal. 9x pocket movements pre-date the Cal. 83 ;-). The latter came into production in 1930, when the Cal. 9x were already around for some time (offical production started in 1927).

However, the layouts of all IWC full bridge movements from this time are similar as the firm had a very clear approach for the basic design that was modified for each of the specific pocket / wristwatch movements.

    Cheers,
    Christian
