I have over 15 pairs of shoe trees from - leo33eppendorf on eBay and they are exceptional - I also have a few pairs from Trickers and Churchs and the ebay ones are the best of the bunch IMO

If you need any in large pm me as I have surplus and will be listing a few pairs following the cull as per my recent SC adverts

Slight off topic question but does anyone have any tips to quieten down the noise from my brogue boots? Each step is partnered with a soft pffft sound... getting some very odd looks at work!

I’m guessing you must have got them for a good price in a sale.

I've a pair of Trickers Green Bourtons.

Bought when Trickers used to auction their shoes on ebay, cost me £83....

I wear them a lot, so much so that they're just about to be sent back to Trickers for a refurb.

I’m not sure I’d have paid full retail of £380 but then I never buy any English shoes at full retail. I was happy to pay £200 though, plus another £3 for the burgundy laces!

They do. They are a wide fitting as standard, so I’d come down by half a size minimum.

  19. #1219
Did need any more brogues, but at least these are dark suede blue, unlike my many pairs of brown. Loake Hoskins from the design range, so made in India rather than England, but they are fully leather lined, and I've had a pair of design Loake before and I've been pleased with the quality.

At less than £50 I couldn't pass them up.

Big fan of these. I have them in tan, black and maroon. Waiting for the chestnut to come up on sale before adding them.

What Brogues are you wearing then? These anyone?

I do love a brogue so was well pleased to find this thread a little while ago... some lovely looking footwear here.

I was inspired to have a good root around the house and gather mine together... I know that I have at least 4 pairs on the missing list and with a 20 year old son living between here and his mothers I think I know where they will be! 1 pair of Barkers, 1 pair of Jeffrey West/M&S more his style than mine anyway), 1 pair of black Loake Royals and a surprisingly nice pair of next commando sole... but without pics it didn’t happen.

This is what I could muster up for now

Left to right - Back to front:
Loake Burford, Loake Heston, Loake Beale
    Oliver Sweeney Aldeburgh, Loake Chester
    Loake Pangbourne, Loake Royal Oxblood

I have also discovered that I have at least 6 pairs of non brogue similar footwear... I should stop looking.

What are peoples' view on Cheaneys?

I need (want) a brown pair of oxfords for work. I have Church, Barker and Loake shoes. The Church shoes I have are streets ahead of the other two in terms of quality, however there's nothing in their current line up that takes my fancy. There are several several Cheaney oxfords that I like the look of - do people here rate them?

I rate Cheaney's above my Loakes and also Barker.

Cheaney are excellent, highly recommended (if a bit pricey).

  27. #1227
Trickers, Crockett and Jones and Cheaney are much better quality than barkers/Loake/Grenson/sanders.
AFAIK they don’t outsource any part of manufacturing to India either.

  28. #1228
I always find Cheaney’s really good, if on a budget Loakes are good value for money.

Indeed. I think Cheaney have a slight edge over Trickers too.

Cheaney are awesome shoes, much better quality than Loake and Barkers IMHO. Never had Churches to compare.

My last two pairs of shoes are Cheaney's both excellent.

  32. #1232
Ok, firstly apologies, these are not brogues.

I was in John Lewis Kingston yesterday and was looking at a nice pair of Derby's in the sale. When the second shoe was brought out for me to try it was obvious that one shoe had been sitting on the rack for months (possibly a year plus) and had sun bleached.

I thought I'd take a punt, and after a bit of negotiation I picked them up for the princely sum of £25. These are Made in England and fully leather construction and retailed north of £200. Way better quality than my Loakes, Oliver Sweeney's and Grension G1s. I'd say nudging towards quality of Grenson G0 range.

A bit of TLC and a lot of dark tan polish, they are never going to be perfect, but you have to look close to spot the difference now. Very pleased.

As if we didnt know :

    (from The Times)

Men outpace women by spending £4.4 billion on shoes

Imelda Marcos was known to own more than 2,700 pairs of shoes, but if buying trends continue it may be male political figures who are known for their huge footwear collections.

A survey of 2,000 people by the research company Mintel found that shoe shopping is becoming increasingly popular among men. Ninety-five per cent of British men aged between 16 and 24 bought a pair of shoes last year, compared with 90 per cent of women.

The market for men’s shoes was worth £4.38 billion last year, with sales having increased by 31 per cent since 2015, according to data from the company. While this is still well behind the value of women’s shoes, at £5.48 billion, the gap is closing: growth in the women’s market was 10 per cent over the same period.

Chana Baram, a retail analyst at Mintel, said: “Men’s footwear, particularly among younger age groups, is really fuelling growth in the footwear sector. Our research shows that men aged 16 to 24 are more likely to be swayed by big brand names than women of the same age.”

Women are increasingly ditching high heels in favour of more comfortable flat shoes, the company said. Only 22 per cent of respondents had bought heels in the past year, compared with 29 per cent the previous year. “A more relaxed atmosphere has helped boost the popularity of casual footwear, including trainers. But the casualisation trend does not stop at trainers,” Ms Baram said.

Cheaney's are great. Every six months they have a decent sale that's well worth waiting for.

Designs are a mix of contemporary and classic, so you'll definitely find something you like.

Not sure if anywhere else on the forum, but some cheap Trickers on TK Maxx website.

I usually buy Cheaney but just bought some Trickers Brogues for £150. Hopefully their quality is on a par with cheaney????

Are the tkmaxx ones good or some budget version made overseas? I’m tempted with a pair and haven’t tried Trickers before, I’ve got Loake 1880 and Cheaney.

The tkmaxx Trickers are inferior quality to the standard Trickers.

Mixed experience here. I have one pair of shoes from there that are cracking, and one pair of boots that I had to send back as they were just cracked!

Out of 3 pairs from there only one pair was so obviously seconds that I had to return them - some colour issues. Given that it is an outlet for seconds, that isn’t bad at all IMHO.

On the contrary, Cheaney sent me the most awful quality pair of boots from their sale a few years back. They were not marked as seconds and went straight back.

The ones I bought weren’t the same build quality plus were undersized. As I was overseas when they arrived and too much time had passed when I returned I ended up getting them stretched by the cobbler but frankly I never wear them. I have probably 8 or 10 other pairs of Trickers and these were the only disappointment.
