CLOGGS SALE may have something to suit gentlemen with tiny or large feet. It includes some decent Cheaney reductions.

What Brogues are you wearing then? These anyone?

Got a pair of tan loake chesters the other day, very nice, also some brown 'john whites' from their church lane range (Blake soles). had a pair of the cheaper black L1s for a few years, recently resolved for the second time.

On that topic, how can you tell if they have resoled properly ( for Goodyear welted) from your normal high street shoe cobblers (or is the answer they rarely do?)

Where do loakes for jasper conran and "loakes shoemaker" branded stuff fall on the quality scale? 'Designed by loake' were pretty naff.

On the naff scale I'd guess. To be honest I think all Loakes aren't great, even the top of the range aren't as good as Cheaney - it's worth spending a bit more.

I never spend more than £60-£70 per pair of loakes so I'm happy with what i get at that price.

I think they are at a different price point, I do agree that the 1880 range is the only range considering from Loake especially at the discount prices they can be found at during sale time.

Would I have paid the £145 M&S claimed for these shoes? No. Was I happy at the £14 I actually paid for them? yes.

You do realise that what you've saved will sadly and inevitably be spent on brylcream?

Yes, I realised the title of the thread and realised that as well as not knowing my arse from my elbow, I clearly do not know a Brogue from a Chelsea boot.....
    Yes, they are nice.

    Strictly tasselled loafers for me!

  24. #724
I had a pair of RM Williams just like that - managed to gouge the toe on a nail sticking out from under a step on a tube station on their very first wear! - never wore them much after that and always thought they looked a bit odd on my feet tbh. Kind of like an orthopaedic shoe if that makes sense? - I know people swear by them but I had a pair of square toed Loake Chelsea boots that lasted for years and had a slimmer shape.

Nice price - the Hasketons are only a few quid more expensive than a re-sole.

Grenson can sort you whatever your budget (OK they start at about £200)

Half the range are made in India and don't last anywhere near as long as a pair of trickers. Overpriced IMHO (I have 3 pairs and they are not a patch on a proper Northampton made shoe)

  29. #729
Partial to the odd pair of Loakes myself, but I'm biased.

And I thought I had a lot of Loakes, I've only got 5 pairs but I think I've got most bases covered with tan brogues, brown suede brogues, sand suede chukka, dark brown Oxford boot and tan brogue boots! Maybe I need a Chelsea or something in black?!

I just dug these out of my workshop. Walter & Son, made in England. I bought these about 30 years ago. I wonder if the shop is still going? I was on holiday around the Folkstone/Dover area and I remember it being an old fashioned shop where you sit down and they fit the shoes for you. I going to try and bring them back to life. Strange what you keep after all those years.................

Deal, sounds about right. Wonder if they still sell shoes made in England.
2 coats of Neatsfoot oil later and they are coming back to life. Going to give it 24 hours and try some polish.

As a heads up, just been into Jones' and they currently are offering a 20% off full price voucher on every purchase. The sales assistant was very keen to point out I could spend £3.99 on shoe protection cream, obtain said voucher and then rinse them for 20% off a pair of Barkers that had caught my eye...

I was in Oxford at the weekend and learned that Ducker and Son (6 The Turl) is planning to close.

They've started a 20 percent sale and will be selling off their existing wares over the next few months, at which point they'll shut the doors that first opened in 1898.

If anyone's passing through the area, it's well worth a visit - I've had a few pairs from them over the years and the quality is superb.

I have a new pair of Agnes and Norman Boots on today... leather is nice and stiff, but not sore to wear so far and they will break in nicely I'm sure!

    Colour is an antiqued brown.

If anyone knows where to get the at 30% off over here then let me know!! I occasionally find them reduced a bit but never in the H fit I need. Last pair I got in Oz and was about £150 IIRC. Now over here they seem to want £350!!

Shame about Ducker and Son, I used to live round the corner and always thought I should go there when I wanted some proper brogues.
