My son's gigantic Death's head moth...

My youngest has been growing butterflies recently. He released some lovely Painted ladies into the wild a few weeks back and thought he'd turn his hand to moths.

I well remember as a kid collecting the large privet hawk and tiger moth caterpillars, there were loads of them around on virtually every privet in those days.

When he got some tiny, barely visible caterpillars I was interested to see them grow into what I remembered as a kid if very slightly different.

He bought this Death's head moth down today, it's gigantic!

He'll be releasing them into the wild soon.
    Cheers,
    Neil.

    Good grief. Scary!

Where I live we get the occasional stag beetle rumbling past. The first thing that goes through my head is "that thing has no business to be flying".

But on a whatthehellisthat scale I reckon anything with a skull painted on it wins hands down.

Good grief. I have a moth phobia, and would probably faint if I was in the same room as that beast.

Silence of the Lambs? Buffalo Bill putting a moth pupa in his victim's throats??

Anyway, that is a monster. Whilst I don't have a moth phobia, you certainly wouldn't see me handling one.

A big bugger of a moth flew into our house the other night, flew right into me between the eyes bloody hurt for a second, managed to get it safely back outside

My kids have the butterfly kit every year they love it, 5 caterpillars arrive, 5 butterflies leave they love releasing them.

That's brilliant. I've never seen a deaths head moth before.

I was doing a little camping in Wales a few weeks ago and found this one. I thought it was a bit of a monster at the time but it's nowhere near the size of yours.

They are beautiful creatures and I love the idea of your son catching them as caterpillars and then releasing the adults into the wild. If you ever get a chance then please take him to the butterfly farm in Stratford-upon-Avon. They have a fantastic hot house where they fly around freely and it's a fabulous place for adults and kids alike.

I worked for the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford a few years ago and lived very close to the butterfly farm and was a frequent visitor. It's excellent.

    Wow that is awesome.

I have never heard of anyone raising butterflies or moths at home before!

My brother has the same problem - he screams like a schoolgirl when there's a moth in the room.

He would have had a complete meltdown the night we had bats flying around our living room

Thanks all for the interesting comments, I was pretty amazed when I saw it too.

A very good way for kids to learn about nature and not be afraid of stuff.

It's often been a bit of a zoo around here.

My eldest son is now the biggest and most knowledgeable Reticulated python breeder in Europe http://www.imperialretics.co.uk/ and my middle son (now in the US) kept a pair of ferrets for years.

The youngest, "Mothman" also keeps tarantulas and scorpions.

When my daughter in law comes around and gets a bit silly when she sees a spider we are all a bit, "What?"
    Cheers,
    Neil.

I'm not at the phobia level, but I ain't far off. Moths freak me out, just don't like them.

    That thing is huge!

Nice one Rob, that's a good size.

I showed my son and it is definitely a type of hawk moth

Those are some scary looking beasts. This luna moth visited our campsite one night (the wingspan was about 5 inches):

I'm not usually a fan of insects, especially big ones, but this moth was really quite beautiful.

Brilliant! I spent some time in the Ukraine and these were everywhere and would often flit down near the campfire. They're massive but very beautiful.

As Moths go, that's lovely. I've never seen anything like that one before. I doubt you get them over here.

Cheers Neil, I had wondered what it was. I took to calling it Mothula!

My girlfriend loves this thread. She thinks they are really cute which is interesting because if you show her a spider she will run a mile.

I like moths and cab catch and had them with no problem. However spiders reduce me to a quivering wreck.

Pictured this one whilst on holiday in south of France last week. Was flying round during the daytime and not shy, quite happy to land on my leg! It was pretty big, you could hear it's wings vibrating as it flew past your head!

That's a Leopard Moth. Geoffrey de Havilland used its name for a 1930s cabin monoplane. I took this photo of one at RAF Halton a couple of years ago:

In my mind I will deliberately read this as

'they live in lime trees. Which are miles from your house so you will never ever see one again, and can now stop acting like a jumpy sissy every time you open the front door lest a moth fly at you'.

I used to have the same phobia (moth & butterfly). I've trained myself to beat it. Nearly caught a hawk moth recently. Couple of years ago I would have literally shat meself even seeing one.

Love the DH moth. Why is the marking there? I understand the markings that look like eyes on wings but don't know this one.

I really can't see the fear in these creatures and must admit I have never met anyone who felt like this until this forum post but well done on beating your phobia Tony.
