    Thumbs up

Are there any other non dog owners who regularly look in on this thread? I grew up with cats in the family though many, in fact most, of my closest friends have dogs, and with that my appreciation of them has grown more and more.

There are some magnificent furry family members here. It's a fantastic and, dare I say, grounding thread to pop in to now and again.

    Thank you.

Still my favourite thread on the forum. 
This week my daughter and her partner collected this little fella.
His name is Harley and he has melted the hearts of the whole family in 48 hours!
    He is a show/working cocker cross. ❤️

    Jim

After not having a dog for 20 years, our new friend is now with us.
We have re-homed Jim,a Ttoodle, 11 months old and he has a wonderful personality, but he is slightly timid. However he is gaining confidence daily!
When we picked him up he looked like this, the cruelest thing was his hair, he’s got so much he couldn’t see, we obviously trimmed him so he could.

We soon realised that he was in quite a state, we tried grooming him, but it was impossible, he was so badly matted, so sadly he had to trimmed right back to the wood! it was like taking a straight jacket off him, wow he can certainly move now! Here he is ready to grow his new coat!

Picked him up at lunchtime, 3 years old. My third greyhound. Came with the name Fred so I have re-christened him Zahri.

She’s beautiful. And a service dog. Wow. I showed her to my Rottweiler and asked him why he cannot be like her! He turned around and started chasing squirrels he’s been chasing for the last two years…

Reminded me of an old friend I still miss terribly.

Started out with nothing. Still have most of it left.

My sons dog was bitten by an Adder. After a week and about £5k the swelling is starting to go down. Be careful out there.

    £5k???
I am glad the dog is recovering but I am surprised at the cost. Adders scare me for the dog but I haven’t seen one in Kent yet.

Emergency vet after hours, blood tests, sedated and kept on a drip for 5 days. It soon adds up. They're notorious locally for being expensive but it was an Emergency and the dog comes first. I'm sure the insurance will cover it but when a dog is running around having fun there's little you can do to avoid it.

I'm not a dog owner and one of the reasons is the big vet bills people seem to incur.
What happens in this scenario when the person can't afford to fork out a few thousand.
Is the dog left to see if it's own immune system overcomes it?

  25. #4375
That what insurance is there for if you have a good (not cheap) policy. I guess it's like driving a car. It doesn't matter if you drive an old banger. If your old banger scrapes a porsche, it's going to be expensive to fix and hopefully your insurance will cover it.

Wow. Mine is also insured and have no complaints on the way they dealt with my rare claims. But it’s frightening to see how fast it gets to very significant sums.

A girl that works for me spent about 6K on her dog and the insurance only covered 2K of it.
The dog died unfortunately so the loss accompanied by a big bill.

    So my question stands.
If the insurance doesn't cover or there is no insurance policy what happens?

Time marches on... I have bred working Bedlington x Whippets for nearly 40 years, but with this one God broke the mould. No pups from him so it is the end of the line. We have had to buy one in, but I won't be starting again, Jet will probably be our last dog.

Tigs, (short for Tigger, because of his stripes) he has been a true gentleman all his life.

With his mum, Fly. Tigs is on the left, I can't find the colour version.

This is our new arrival, he has been with us a year now, meet Jet.

If you have no insurance or it doesn't cover the problem you need to talk to the vet and find out how far costs could potentially escalate. If its definitely going to be out of your reach then the awful decision has to be made of putting the dog to sleep. But that's better than letting the animal suffer.

I've been avoiding this thread since posting about our loss, thank you so much for the members that got in touch, this forum is a wondrous place full of lovely people!

Now on to the reason for revisiting...

Touch my human and you'r toast!

I took the pic of my wife working in the garden with Elvis under her chair through the kitchen window. Elvis' look of warning is the 'friendly version'. He takes his role as guard of the property - and guard of my wife very very seriously. For that, he was hired.

Amusingly, one of her litter brothers is called Elvis, he’s going to be a very beefy boy and I’m trying to persuade a friend to have him.

We had to say goodbye to our beautiful little Westie Tululla this morning, she would have been 17 next April and she had a fantastic life, just got to get over our broken hearts. Love your dogs like they love. RIP my little princess.
