We also brought home James, a much older tal fenek with an unfortunate history- apparently thrown out by the farmer he spent his first few years with and then went through two abortive rehomings. I think he may be around 9 years old and I suspect he may have sandfly disease so will be going for blood tests and if he has it will be on medication for the rest of his life but hopefully he’ll get to enjoy at least a couple of good years with a family...

Finally a group shot of the whole pack- L-R Candy, Pie, Jenny, James. All rescue dogs...

    Excellent work 👍🏼 👍🏼 👍🏼

Taken this morning, just after I finished my ham and cheese toastie. They are not allowed in the dining room while we are eating, but after... "please feed us now".

Brilliant and good to read that you follow the rules of a pack: the leaders eat first. Lots of people melt when they see those droopy eyes and feed their dogs eat before they eat themselves.

Using 2 people makes the initial training easier to control (and praise) appropriately. You probably wont need 2 people for many sessions.

Start the training in a location where there are limited distractions and work up from there.

When he/you are ready, introduce a whistle for the recall command. It is much more discrete than shouting at the top of your voice at 6am, when your dog has chased a rabbit/hare/deer into the nearby farmers garden.....

LOADS of praise and never scald them. I got angry (tone of voice only) with my youngest pup and now he is reluctant to come back to me, even though I have never done it again since.

Little and often is better than a single marathon when it comes to training.

Always end on a positive note.

    Always be consistent.

Always be patient. If it is not going well, knock it on the head and come out another day.
Sound advise this, I would add.....

If you are going to use a whistle start now as you are feeding him. I use five short pips when I recall and always start off when very young and feeding. Five gentle pips on the whistle and then feed. Use an Acme whistle for consistency and choose a tone and stick with it. I use a 210.5 for my Springer and 212 for my Munsterlander to differentiate so they each have a tone. Don't just use any old whistle. Acme whistles are consistent and you will have exactly the same tone for your dog for the rest of its life. people think a whistle is a whistle. It isn't...…. Five pips to recall. One pip to stop and sit. 2 to hunt left, 3 right, etc, etc. Always treat when they recall and never scold when they don't. As someone has already said, don't keep calling or whistling. Once only, otherwise it becomes background noise and they will ignore. If they don't recall go and get them. They soon pick it up. To be honest the best way to get a young pup to have good recall always is to be their best mate and the source of all of their fun when they are very young. If they are having better fun free hunting and chasing birds or rabbits then why would they want to come back? When training initially do no more than 15 minutes and make the rest play and fun.

My two really are my best mates and make me smile (and swear) on a daily basis....

    Video

Thought you’d like to see this video.. the young lady in it is a great friend of my wife’s... and the little dog and the cat are hers..

A couple of years ago whilst being supposedly looked after by a dog sitter, the dog got out and was cris crossing the main road where we live.. because he knew me, he came when called, and I took him home until his owner could collect him..

Nice video. I thought that the joke was a message to her with: "Your husband has eaten too much pies today!"

These two live with me the brindle is mummy's baby and the other is my daughters baby.

Deacon I call him Deacon Monster he is a Mountain Cur that hunts and kills anything that moves including groundhogs.

This one is a mutt 60% Staffordshire Terrier my son gave my daughter a DNA test to her for a Xmas present one year. She is named for my daughters favorite designer Dior. We call her Dior-oreo cookie her contrasting fur color with the shirt color makes her looked photoshop into this picture too.

Porridge has had a rough time of it lately, she’s been having seizures for the last year, and last month we thought we’d come to the end of the road. However, things are looking up, a neurologist has given her a new drug regime, and crucially, a new drug for her seizure recovery. She had a seizure the other day, which for the first time in a few months didn’t develop into a cluster, and she seems to be feeling fine. Snoring a lot, but fine!

Saw this quote, and it immediately made me think of this thread.

“Dogs have given us their absolute all. We are the center of their universe. We are the focus of their love and faith and trust. They serve us in return for scraps. It is without a doubt the best deal man has ever made. ”
