My wife and I are giving serious thought to getting a dog over the Summer. One of our main choices is a Beagle - any owners on here?

A good friend has Ruby the beagle. He likes a curry, hence her name. Ruby is very friendly, good with children and is excellent at guarding the front door. However she's lazy, greedy, overweight and recalcitrant. This is probably more a reflection on my friend than the breed, especially since he didn't train her when she was young. She does shed hair.
I hope that doesn't sound too negative because overall she's a lovely family pet.

Hopefully we will get round to continue the training. It really is very simple. We won't ever get to the level of competing, but will rather use it as a way of keeping us and the dog active.
In its simplest form it's just a matter of finding a suitable place.
- Mark a starting point (in the beginning with some treats)
-then walking with small steps (start with a straight track) for 10-20m
- Mark the end with a toy
- circle back away from the track
- wait 15-30 minutes.
Then you lead the dog to the starting point and wait for it to pick up the trail, let it lead you to the end point and find the toy.
As they get more experienced you can do longer trails and also add in som angles.
I don’t own a beagle so don’t take this as gospel, but I’m acquainted with a few on my dog walking outings.
Beagles are lovely and beautiful, but they are also infamously bad at recall, which is coming back when called.
I’m guessing this is something to do with their breeding, being bred to hold a scent and not get distracted once they’re on the trail.
As a consequence of this, they are nearly always on the lead, which seems a shame.
Yes, in the past we had a Beagle called Taz, he was the coolest dog ever. Everybody’s friend, dog friendly and children friendly.
Training was a bit of a challenge, but sausages or cheese, made for excellent recall.
House training was the opposite, he caught on straight away that if he need the toilet sit by the door and it will be opened.
He developed epilepsy in later life, and the fits were getting worse and worse as time went by, so at age 10 we had to say goodbye.
I’d have another beagle anyday..
Thank you. Our friends have a beagle cross and she is lovely, the comments rings true from their experiences - especially recall :D
Update on our "wee" lurcher pup Clover.
She's coming in great at 14 weeks now and is amazing and a horror in equal measures. Training is coming on well and already had 3 weeks of puppy classes.
Unfortunately as can be seen below we lost the battle of the sofa.
White flags were raised and treaties have been drawn up.
(That's a comfortable 2-seater sofa, and the only one we have in the flat!)

Speaking of work some dogs do:-
Hero dogs receive bravery awards: Canine OBEs for dogs who helped at scenes of terror attacks
A police mutt probably wouldn’t know what to do with a medal, unless you covered it in gravy or made it look like a tasty chihuahua. He or she is much more likely to appreciate an extra few biscuits for dinner – and would probably love you forever. That is probably what seven dogs from the Met and British Transport Police are tucking into this week.Seven police dogs who supported the cops and paramedics during the London terror attacks at Westminster Bridge, London Bridge and Borough Market have been honoured for their heroic actions by vet charity PDSA.They were awarded the PDSA Order of Merit – the animal equivalent of the OBE – at a ceremony on Tuesday. The dogs have been chosen to represent the 19 dogs who served during the 2017 attacks. From the Met, they are Kai, Delta and Dave and from the BTP Bruno, Marci, Jax and Bobby.

Herbert is now 17 weeks old, and his damned legs just won’t stop growing. He stumbles around like Bambi, some days his hind is higher than his front as it’s clear his legs grew over night!
We also spectacularly lost a sofa battle.
Few things as photogenic as a tired out puppy
Can't remember if I've posted this, apologies if it's a duplicate.
Great photo, I cant believe you've managed to tire out a couple of Springers! Had one when I was younger, used to take it for miles out in the Cumbrian fells (hours and hours of walking), soon as we got back she would be off for her ball for me to throw......endlessly😂
6 months and 25kg now
When my wife's nephew brings his springer to go for a walk up Rivington our staffie enjoys chasing her.
Then the novelty wears off and i can see a look of 'oh f**k it' on his face.
Polo looks like he's full of beans but he's a sloth compared to Maggie.

I've owned a beagle cross for the last 6 years and see plenty of beagles owners whilst out on walks. They make a fantastic family pet due to their calm and loving nature but early training is key. They are clever and enjoy training. Recall is a real problem, once they have a scent there is no calling them back.
I can walk Baxter off lead during the day but early morning or dusk when there are more animals about he has to go on lead or he'd be gone!!
Love dogs but am very allergic to them so don’t have one
But wanted to adopt these that I met last week in the Lakes

Sadly won't be seeing my little darling for the next month but she will be well looked after at home by my youngest and his gf.
There's no escape from the Bullies though as I will have to contend with her Floridian step sister....
Cheers,
Neil.
Great pics as always Neil! Have a great time in Fla (and DO wear those Chav Meister Sandals!!)

Bags.
You were born 01.01.09.
You loved the beach, walks round Bangour and snow. You loved cuddles, your cow, and armpit scratches.
You loved watermelon, tomato soup and ice cream.
You loved rolling in shit. Grub.
You loved everything, including me, unconditionally. You were kind.
And dear God I loved you and will continue to love you.
You snored. You chewed up your ear drops because you didn't like them. You bunny kicked me if I moved onto your side of the bed.
You learned to drive during a trip to Applecross where you stared at me from the back seat for over 6 hours.
You were taught to cook every Christmas day.
You were my best friend and my heart is broken.
You died yesterday. 25.04.19. I held you and I didn't want to let go. You were only ten and you fought a brain tumour for as long as I would allow it.
Rest my little one. Find Hilary. Be a good girl. X.
Verv. So sorry for your loss. Been there too many times. It hurts and leaves you feeling raw. They really do make life better and ask so little in return.
I'm so very sorry to hear that, Verv! RIP Bags!!
So sorry for your loss V, I wish I could say something that helps,,

My heart goes out to you.
Dogs fill our hearts with their affection and devotion, and there is little that I can write by way of consolation, though the tears of sorrow shed reflect just a fraction of the joy shared.
What a blessing you have such wonderful photos as testament to those ten years.
My thoughts are with both you and Bags.
