He’s my fox red labrador. Angle and early morning sun working it’s magic I guess.

I’m a bit biased where red dogs are concerned but he’s absolutely gorgeous. That’s quite a pack you have there!

Indeed, a trip to the vet this morning for his 12-weeks shot revealed that he's grown up to 11.4 kilos. According to the vet, all's well.

Funny situation at the vet's: she told me and my wife (we also brought the cat in for his 12-weeks shots) that she (the vet) and we are practically neighbours. With only a handful of houses here in the rural area, one is practically always a neighbour. She'd recognized our dog when she walked her dogs the other day.

A 12-weeks shot certainly hits a dog. Today, he's not the happy-go-lucky pup he normally is. His spot in the sun on the terrace and his bench are now his happy places. Hopefully, tomorrow will be a better day.

And we've started puppy training. That's currently a problem. Due to Covid rules, some city councils won't allow training in small groups. I had contacted a few trainers with Rottweiler experience and finally I found a lady near the NE Dutch German border who was willing to train and coach. She has trained both the dad and mom of our pup, so she's well aware of the breed and this line of dogs. We went there yesterday. A very useful first training. Apparently, a lot of training is going well: what I'd done myself from memory and YT videos; but I was told that I wanted too much in a short time. That was good. Someone telling me what to do (or in this case NOT to do). Anyway both Elvis and I enjoyed the training.

It is generally accepted that "puppy class" is usually more about training the owner on the dos and donts. The dog picks up everything quickly, including unfortunately the handler's mistakes, hence the classes

I must say that I was quite chuffed with the fact that things had gone so well without experienced advice. It also shows where YT videos fail: they're not clear about the pace: every dog (and owner) has/have a different pace of learning things.

An example: my pup was quick when it comes to walking next to me with no tension on the leash. Let's say that all goes fine around 70 - 80% of the time. Yesterday I've learned that the remaining 30/20% is something that takes time. And that's something that's not shown or mentioned in a YT video!

I relocated a row of plants and I turned on the garden sprinkler for watering the plants. All on this first day on which I started training Elvis to stay near me without a long leash when working in the garden. He encountered one of the sprinklers. Better: he attacked one of the sprinklers! The outcome was not what he had in mind...

My wife was not amused when I took the wet dog into the kitchen (where I took the pic). A smelly dog... After a lot of comments about his smell and my decision to take him in, she dug out special dog shampoo (so-called 'dry shampoo') she'd bought on the internet. I was amazed by the fact that (a) he wasn't protesting when the foam was put on his fur and (b) he smelled really nice afterwards.

    Yes he does!

It's interesting to see how he reacted when met his sister (again). The body language is different compared with meeting another pup or grown-up dog. More sedate, quieter. Then it's like they pick up playing where they left off a month ago.

This puppy class is all about training Rotties. Great to see how different they all are and how different they behave. Elvis is used to roaming around without a leash. He can't leave the grounds around tour house and I have all day training him to stay close to me. The only time he's not with me, is when I use a chainsaw. That's torture for his ears and I can't divide my attention between a roaming pup and a 60cc chainsaw on full speed... So, he's used to being called and is used to getting a treat when he comes. I'll start training him with a 'come'-whistle starting tomorrow.

What I love when he's around, is 'helping': when I dug out a shrub, he starts clawing with his paws and is covered with soil within seconds. And when I replant it, he wants to be certain that it's the right spot for the plant...

His nemesis is the 2 kilo cat, Louie. I've suggested we change the cat's name into Blofeld. After the Bond villain with the cat. My wife doesn't agree. But I reacted with: "Why not? He doesn't listen when you call him by his name!?

Bella is 13 today and still loving life.

She has cancer that will take her in the next few months but no one has told her that yet.
If we could bottle her lust for life, the world would be a better place.

    Cheers,

    Adam.

    Oh Adam, I’m so sorry,

I wish we’d have had a few more months with Poppy
But her diagnosis during surgery meant not waking her was the kindest thing.
    I miss her everyday.

    Happy Birthday Bella,
I hope all your days are birthday spoilt.

Elvis is not allowed on chairs and sofas. But hey, when I’m not around... who’s going to ‘enforce’ that rule...

He didn’t see me when I took the pic. After taking the picture, I went outside and he quickly jumped off!

I wouldn’t be worried. A male dog should never harm an immature. A bitch could tell him off but either harming the puppy would probably tell the owner they have a tragedy waiting to happen in their dog.

That ended perfectly. He's best mates with the B'dog. A very gentle giant. However, that dog is 7 yrs old and that's pretty old for that type of dogs. Elvis runs in circles around the Bourdeaux but he loves that 'young boy' near him.

That's good to hear. One of my dogs is the very devil with youngsters. Unless their dog etiquette is perfect he'll grab them by the scruff of the neck and lay them out. Doesn't really hurt them, no blood involved but quite frightening for them.

Elvis, now 8 weeks living with us. Doubled his weight, lots of fun. He can roam around in the garden (fenced). He’s only on a leash whe outside the gates.

Ted in a rare moment of stillness just after rushing through the long grass, chasing pheasants out, (hence the mucky eye!).
