Spending a few days in Cornwall. Just popped in for a quick pint after a lovely walk with Baxter.

Few weeks ago we noticed a fair bit of blood coming from penis tip of our Brodie .
Took him to the local, domestic pet vet and all manner of tests, scans and samples taken with good news of ‘all clear.’
Bleeding got worse and wouldn’t stop so vet directed him to be taken to the EDI University Royal Dick Vet where poor boy was subjected to same intense tests but using more sensitive equipment. Again all clear BUT concern about the soft tissue area at the end of the penile bone near urethra. Vets optimistic that it was not cancer so huge sigh of relief. He’s 10.5 and not too old for a black lab! Bleeding diagnosed as idiopathic haematuria or similar. Basically bleeding that they can’t find a source for.
That was the Thursday. Came home on Friday with wife having taken call from Vet Hospital. CANCER. Urothelial carcinoma - this is a type of cancer affecting his urethra
Now undergoing regime of chemo to help but unlikely to cure. Radiotherapy or surgery not an option - only options were chemo or do nothing. Bleeding has finally stopped but is nothing to do with cancer - it’s a UTI
So chemo it is, at great cost. All told £10k cost so far. Daughter has even started a fund raising page bless her.
Moral of this good people is look after your mutts as best you can. As it is, our big fella is running about like a pup. He’s obviously not got the memo that he’s dying!
We are heartbroken and devastated. Life can be real cruel. Our granddaughter who stays with us has grown up with Brodie and she has asked him not to die!! How do you deal with that?? Tears flow very easily just now.
May all your dogs bark long and loud tonight folks.
Jim
This is Brodie today enjoying the winter sun. Might be the last time ….

Feel for you Jim, welled up reading that; hoping chemo works for him. I love having a pet, but hate the fact one day we will have to say goodbye.
Wow that is expensive, but vets are - we got to £1.3k for a bite on our cats foot in the summer. All racked up so quickly after a few visits and X-rays.
He had another scrap 10 days before a holiday last month that had him coned & on antibiotics, me cleaning the wounds 3 times a day and almost costing us a rather bloody expensive holiday as could not leave him if infected.

Thank you very much.
Sadly waved goodbye to a couple of others as they crossed the rainbow bridge to run free and wild, and it never gets easier. This one’s a real toughie though. I think cos he’s grown up alongside our granddaughter and they are pals. She will feel it especially hard.
Thanks for writing.
Jim
Brodie is a great looking lab; heart goes out to you all.
Feel for you. He looks like a Good Boy.
Jim, I really hope that is not the case.
We are approaching a similar stage, and I can't even think about it.
Heartbreaking to hear about your granddaughter’s wish Jim, my daughter has a similar relationship with our pup, it’ll be devastating when she goes.
Here’s hoping Brodie has many more days happily running around before his time comes.
Jim
That is so heart-breaking to read.
We are going through a similarly painful experience with our 8 month old flatcoated retriever who was at deaths door last weekend. We thought we were going to have to put him to sleep on Sunday morning, as he went downhill so fast, but he seems to have now (for the time being) turned a corner.
I sincerely hope that Brodie responds well to the treatment and continues to live a full and happy life without any discomfort or pain.
He is a gorgeous looking boy.
Every time we lose a pet, I wonder why we put ourselves through it again, as the heartbreak it causes is like having your insides torn out. They bring so much joy though, that I cannot imagine my life without them around.
I have two Jack Russell terroists. Archie who is 16 has always loved the beach.
So I took him to see my Daughter who is at Bournemouth uni a few Fridays ago. It coincided with amazing weather so had a great time together.
He totally deaf, partially sighted and really starting to struggle walking but he really enjoyed it.
A but emotional as this will most probably be his last visit to the seaside.
He still potter around the garden though.
Took a fujifilm Instax mini Evo to test out as well.
Thank you, each and every one of you for the kind and touching words about our big fella.
He got his 2nd round of chemo today and is a bit dozy as we need to give him chill pills at night and first thing. If he was to start saying it’s cool man and hey dudes I’d not be surprised such is his relaxed style.
Still we pray and keep everything crossed. Lily gave him a special hug today when she got home! No kissing though due to treatment.
Thanks everyone. Next instalment next week.
And to my fellow TZers in this boat. Let’s keep rowing away from the rainbow bridge for now. That’ll come but not quite ready thank you, not yet!
All the very best
Jim
Lily has just said she wants to be with him when he dies. How profound for a 9year old! There’s a few tears again I’m afraid.

Original post deleted as it went horribly wrong. Blue squares with numbers in, no idea what that is all about!

What a beautiful loving daughter, but please berate her on my behalf for making me well up again! Tears are a good way of relieving built up stress & pressure. Pre any previous mental health issues I saw it as a weakness, now I just embrace it all tbh.
She truly has a heart of gold, well done on how you have brought her up; such a loving human and people we need more of in this world.
Would be fantastic if this inspired her to become a vet. If she wanted!
I am mentally rowing away with you as hard as I can.

I’m sorry about that. I too learned a few years ago that crying is a strength and not the weakness we sometimes think it is!!
Lily is a diamond in truth. And I laugh out loud. Her auntie, our son’s wife, is a vet in Blairgowrie area and when they meet it’s all about dogs cats horses etc etc. This though with Brodie is very real for her. Wee soul knows what it means but is taking it one step at a time. Bless her!!
Might need an outboard on our boat me thinks. There’s a ferrying to turn against the tide.
Jim
Jim,
My gang send their love, licks and get well wishes.
Keep your pecker up Brodie (every pun intended)
…and what a star Lily is,
As brave as any of us.

Thanks Jim.
He’s a truly tough dog, frozen ponds…crash through the ice to get his ball, no problem. Scared me to death!
Cuts his pads regularly and they heal quickly
But this wound has become infected and the antibiotics have flattened him

Thank you. He is to get another round of tests after chemo round 4 next week on Boxing Day.
Poor fella has been great till the last 2 days. Now very lethargic and depressed. Very sad to see and deal with. He was so full of beans on Sunday. Round 3 chemo tomorrow.
I fear the rainbow bridge is looming. We darent tell Lily.

Just noticed this thread at the top of the page again, really sorry to read about Brodie Jim, all the best for him.
Our own beautiful 10 month old Black Lab had her own issues this evening, she went charging down the garden with our Cocker Spaniel when there was a loud and horrible yelping. When I went to see what had happened, I was horrified to see that a piece of ‘stick’ was poking out of her eye socket!
Straight to the vets, and they’ve given her a general anaesthetic and removed a piece of wood the length of my thumb. :-( She’s not out of the woods yet (no pun intended) and may still lose her eye yet, but fingers crossed.
Specialist eye vet tomorrow, thank goodness for pet insurance…
Here's Herbie.
Had him nearly 7 years & he was about 7 when we rescued him.
Loves people, never heard him growl, even if you take food out of his mouth, let's small children twiddle his ears and tweak his tail. It will be a truly terrible day when it's his time to go.

Hi guys
Brodie had Round 3 of chemo today which was full bhuna this time.
He seems neither up nor down now he’s had it but we had a lot of bleeding this morning before he went to the Royal Dick Vet - how very apt eh??
Vet reckons he’s exercising a bit too much so no more playing gently with a ball. His next round is on 27th.
Lily meanwhile was terribly upset at leaving him before she went to school. She wanted to come with him to vets. We’ve said she can go next week.
Thanks everyone for all your messages of support. It helps a lot right now.
PS if you see me with the guitar and empty cap outside your local train or bus station, forgive the singing just be kind 😜😜😜
