Need a man bag. Any advice?

It should hold a 12" laptop, iPad + a little extra.

Canvass or leather fishing or shooting bag, plenty of pockets, good thick shoulder strap and not too gay looking.

Try http://www.epicmilitaria.com/product...arge-pack-grey - good quality. If you want something in leather try a soviet map case of the bay.

I have a couple of la coste ones I got when I worked for samsonite (they make la coste luggage) they still do a few good ones http://shop-uk.lacoste.com/Bags/5311000,en_GB,sc.html

Try and find a Belstaff Colonial. The mid-size one will do the job you want.

I bought one earlier in the year from SC and it was worth every penny!

Happy it helped. They get some good surplus stuff on that site. Those bags are classic and a bargain.

Visconti do decent leather messenger bags. There was a thread in the last few months in the same subject with some good suggestions in it that would be worth looking out.

They were de rigueur at the grammar school I attended in the early '70s; known there as 'haversacks'. Mine was identical to the one in the pic on that site.

The custom was to paint the flap, usually an album cover or band logo would be replicated there, but sometimes a football club emblem was favoured. I didn't have the necessary artistic skills, sadly.

Whatever you go for from epicmilitaria, just don't get any of the Nazi memorabilia they sell....

They were still doing that in the early 80s in Hull, always was a bit behind the times!

I went for a Maxpedition Mongo from Heinnes. Has loads of pockets and appears to be nearly indestructible.

Jost is great quality and well thought out. Can be pricey though (esp compared to £6 for the haversack!) so depends on what you're happy to spend. Think Selfridges stock Jost and they have a couple of shops in London too.

No, once their pockets are bulging, real men just carry twenty or so random things in their hands, leaving a small trail of debris in their wake. Or better still, they just stuff things down their pants, the manly way. 'Bags', I ask you, whatever next!

  34. #34
www.knomobags.com normally offer good quality products.

There is also www.etsy.com/uk/‎ for hand crafted goods, though it would involve taking a chance...

I'd go for a Rothco Canvas Messenger Bag which found fame in 24 with it being the bag of choice for Jack Bauer

Have a look at http://www.carryology.com/ for inspiration. They're usually featuring something a bit different than what you can find at the high street.

I have a Crumpler Silver Dig XL.
I use this for my camera as I don't like to advertise the fact that I am carrying about 7 grand worth of camera gear with me by using a proper camera bag.
It is very strong and looks ok.

Great timing! The strap on the other end of my current one has given way (the metal holder is too big for the phallus ) and I'm looking for a new one.

My current one is from Reiss - they do some nice ones too - really good value if in the sale as not quite worth th 150 quid plus they charge otherwise. It's lasted me 4 years and me overloading it with stuff.

Try Porsche Design, some may find them pricier but they are super durable and very classy. Suitable for business meetings and more casual uses.

I second the Timberland recommendation. I have had one of their messenger bags for 7 years and have used it as my daily work bag. It has padding for a laptop, lots of internal pockets, zippered compartments and a host of other goodies. It is the best work-bag I have ever had. Despite not being overly large, it has a great, full sized pocket on the back that is large enough to hold a dress shirt, 1 pair of underwear, a pair of socks and a tie, making it suitable for an overnight bag for a one day business trip. It might not look like a million bucks, but it holds everything and is very comfortable to carry even when stuffed.

    Cheers,

    Jay
