Proxy for an analogue VGA connection

I'm not very techy.

I have a small unit that allows me to connect my laptop to multiple monitors. Thing is, my latest laptop doesn't have one of those blue VGA connectors. So I can't connect the unit.

Is there any way of getting around this?

Apologies if it's an ignorant question.

Yes you should be able to by an adaptor that plugs into the port on your computer, normally like this

When you say multiple monitors, do you mean 1 laptop monitor plus 1 external monitor or do you need to drive multiple externals monitors? If it's the latter the I suggest you share the laptop model.

It's a basic Dell Chromebook that's tiding me over for a few months. Just USB inputs and an HDMI.

Thanks C-B, I have an old Matrox Tripleheadtogo which can drive three monitors plus the laptop itself. There are three DVI inputs and one analogue output. I've downloaded the driver from Matrox.

The comedy moment came when I was holding the VGA cable and searching the laptop for the appropriate place to put it.

I may even have done the Stan Laurel scratching the top of my head thing.

I'm afraid that Chromebooks are all Greek to me; when you say you've downloaded the drivers I take it that you mean Chromebook drivers rather than Windows ones? I've just taken a cursory glance and couldn't see anything for that OS but I'll be the first to admit I didn't look very hard (but did find a comment about multi-unit support being available for Windows only).

This will do the signal conversion for you; it doesn't need a driver and draws its power from the HDMI port. I had to get one like this to connect Mrs. Plug's HDMI laptop to a VGA monitor and it's just plug and play.

What I don't know is how ChromeOS handles mutliple monitors, so your Matrox box may or may not work. But for 8 quid I guess it's worth a punt.

Chrome os is essentially a version of Linux. It is a while since I used one but you can mirror the display on one or more external monitors or use the laptop plus an external display. So if you get a hdmi to vga cable it should work out ok.
