Thread revival to show my new JLC Master Quartz and have all Gary's great background.
It's had the tender care of both Rocco and Keitht and looks and goes great.

I'm ridiculously late to hop on to this thread, but does any of you have experience from both the white and the blue dial? I am desperately looking for a Master Quartz and I'm not sure what to go for. The blue is stunning, but the white may be more wearable? Thanks!

Sorry for the dodgy picture which does not give the colours of the dial its due the hue of the blue in sunlight is amazing. I had been after a nice example of a MQ for a while and this certainly does not disappoint. I unfortunately can not give you an answer on the white dial.

Fab with shirt and jacket. Also great with Jeans and T. Have been kindly informed by the seller that it is not the original watch in the OP's post but never mind still a stunner.
If you don't mind me asking, what do you think would be a fair price range for an MQ in nice-ish condition? I have checked at Chrono 24, but I often think the prices there are made up in Cloud Cuckoo-land.

TBH Can not give you a valuation or price range. It really comes down to seeing one at a price you can accept. I was happy to pay what I did for the condition of the watch given I had always wanted one.
Thanks for the advice! Compared to other JLC's the MQ is on the whole still in a sensible price range. I wonder if JLC has always been above say Omega in price or if it is lately that they have rocketed?

Spent a long time looking for a good one of these and found one recently from a German dealer at a reasonable price.
It's sitting at home waiting for me now but I'm working overseas and won't be home until next year so still haven't been able to wear it.

Ended up with a silver dial.
A lot of the blue I looked at had damage to the dial around the lume which is apparently a common fault with these. Someone with more knowledge than me might be able to expand on this.
I'm not sure I qualify as having more knowledge but it's commonly referred to as dial rot and doesn't just affect JLCs; I have an Omega with minor signs of it happening.
I have aZenith XL-Tronic with a blue dial that has patinated to a lovely mottled effect that is almost like polished stone. I'm not generally a fan of dials that have turned "spider" or "tropical" but occasionally the effect can be very attractive.
It is specifically a problem with blue dials. I have seen it on all makes, including Tudor, Longines, JLC, Zenith and others.
I have had quite a few and it is very hard to find ones that are not affected.
When they are affected the blue seems to flake off around the lume plots.
But when they are not affected, they remain fine.
For what it is worth, I remain convinced that it is a combination effect, and that a reaction is started when the dial has something happen to it, like, for instance, an exposure to a moisture level.
I never see dial rot in an a "middle" state, it seems that it either affects the dial massively, or not at all.
I personally think blue dials are fantastic, and most of them have a real variation in appearance with differing light conditions. This is an effect yo simply do not get with most black, white and silver dials.
So you do have to find a good one, but it is worth it.

Prices seem all over the place. Hodinkee, not a reliable indicator of price of anything really, had one with the original box for $2900. So taking that as a likely high water mark, still a lot less than an Oysterquartz.
To Hodinkee's credit, they take good photos though…

I was very lucky, both to get mine and also to get access to Rocco's lapping machine in the early days before he chose to focus on servicing a small number of brands. A lot of these will have had a hard life - their bulk means that they are a natural door-frame magnet. I would begin by finding out who has access to a lapping machine before buying one - they have plenty of metal to allow for refinishing. Parts are not an insurmountable problem as the same movement is in a number of lower-value Girard Perregaux models and we have people like keitht on the forum who will work on them.

I absolutely loved mine but unfortunately the bracelet was to small for my wrist. Try as I might I was unable to source an extra link anywhere so very reluctantly I had to let it go. This and the beautiful polerouter I let go because it was “too small” are my biggest horological regrets.

The bracelet maker is a bit of a mystery - I've seen the same (or very similar) bracelets on Favre Leuba, Zenith & Girard Perregaux (and maybe Omega) and I wonder if they could be cannibalised. Too late for you, mind you.

For those possibly interested / for reference:
The outside ring comes off first (probably best to use a caseback opener, unless you have finger nails of titanium).
Then the metal caseback (fingernails a fine option)
Then the inner caseback.
And finally you should have access
I fitted an SR44W (gold coating). The old battery was an SR44. Both seem to work.
