You do know that there is a search option on here, don't you?
I know there are more than a few diver watches out there and would like your thoughts. What criteria would you use to make a watch a true diver and what in your opinion are the classic divers?

Blancpain fifty fathoms
rolex sub
If earlier, longines navy canteen diver
Mike
Vostok Amphibia. A triumph of Russian industrial design and a bloody clever way to make a 200m dive watch. For about £50.
I would say Seiko 6309 7040, as I've just got my first Seiko 6309 7040.
They are classic though.
Blancpain FF.... it's a classic diver for sure.
Great readability, clean and waterproof :)
Citizen NY0400-09E, now thats a classic.
Rolex Sub, without a doubt, and Omega Seamaster 300M and PO spring to mind.
You can't get more classic than a Seiko 6105.
IWC Aquatimer 3536 and TAG superpro
Blancpain FF...
Well, Omega made some...
As did Seiko :)
But for some reason, I don't have any snaps of my 6105 - it's seriously chunky for a vintage diver
I've got a few different ones, but I'd say that the intent was the thing. There are lots of modern divers with marginal water resistance, if the original intention of the watch was for it to be used underwater, then it's a diver. Classic? Well, age helps, but there are a few stand-out models in my collection (SM300 of varying model, including the SMP, 6105 and 62MAS) which were, for me, landmark models, ones which either changed the game, defined a generation or just changed public perception.
The main criteria for me, though, is simple - do I like it? :)
Rolex Sub for sure
Though maybe the 14060 ND rather than an LV
Omega SMP/PO
Both now moved on to other TZ'ers
Surprised there's been no mention of Doxa or Oris...
The TT1 is (IMHO) an iconic Oris design that is instantly recognisable, though they seem to have changed their design a bit recently.

SM300, Ploprof and Sea-Dweller ...and of course the first orage faced diver and He escape valve watch the Doxa 300T. simples
What about a Kontiki, surely a classic ?
Rolex Submariner 5512 and BP fitfhy phatoms
Rolex 1665...
But ideally would go for 666 with matte dial if you want more of a tool...
Something a bit left field, but these are becoming quite sought after - the Suunto Spyder Titanium... this one has logged me over 500 dives and still counting!
Eddie has made at least one
Although i have to say the Rolex Sub is probably the most prominent - i would vote for Seiko! 6309, 6105 and of course 62MAS! All defining classic divers IMHO!
I'd mention a few
Rolex Sub - in fact make it a Tudor
Universal Geneve Polerouter Sub (the EPSA twin crown one)
Eterna Kontiki
Something with a monster crystal like the Bulova Sea Hunter or Sandoz Typhoon
Citizen 150m
Certina DS
Doxa should be in there, but they are not my taste at all
Ploprof
and on and on....
Soo many to choose from, and so little budget left
Dave
Controversial I know but what about a Rado:

For me it's got to be Seikos, I'm an ex RN diver(1980's) and we even preferred them to the Navy issue Rolex ND which we thought were poor as tool watches, small dials and rubbish lume. So we bought/used these.Kev
I've had a few divers that could be classed as 'classic', but recently have seemed to drift in a different direction..
In fact, I've just realised that I have only two rotatable bezels at the mo :(
I've tried to put these in a top ten countdown order of my personal take on the classic diver, (that I've been lucky enough to have pass through my hands):
1. The Sub, the most iconic dive watch there is, (to 'WIS' or any normal human being)...
2. Whether you like Rolex or not, the Seadweller is a true classic...
3. Omega Seamaster 300, (no date) my personal favourite...
4. Seiko Tuno, epitome of tool...
5. Seiko 6105, classic case design, if its good enough for Cpt Willard something must be right.
6. IWC Aquatimer 3536, 2000m of classy classic...
7. Eddies classic, set new standards - no line up of classic divers would be complete without it...
8. Sinn U1, current classic...
9. Omega 2254.50 Future classic...
10. Anonimo Polluce, Bronze classic and because I miss them :(
Rob
seiko sumo, for sure

Ignorance breeds Fear. Fear breeds Hatred. Hatred breeds Ignorance. Break the chain.
Depends on whether you are actually going to use it underwater, or just 'pose' in it!
To pose, then either FF or Sub/SD,
To use, a Sinn U1W....unmatched legibility underwater.
I have both but only use the Sinn underwater.....mind you I still fancy an FF.....

True diver for me:
At least 200m WR, certified
Strong luminous hands and markers
Unidirectional rotating bezel
Classic divers: MANY and on all price levels. From Seiko to Blancpain FF. IMHO the most iconic is the Rolex Sub, but also a couple of Omega Seamasters, the Doxa sub, etc.
Personally I prefer the classic than the contemporary design on watches and I prefer newer than vintage on divers, in order to be able to use them in the environment they are build for.
As Classic as they come......

Sorry for blatant sales pitch but I couldn't resist.

How about a hummer?
Not a B M - but it is black
Verging on classicity
definitely a diver
has some bling (sharks beware)
Some very interesting and unexpected choices. Seiko and Rolex spring to my mind, but there are many others as well.
I like all of these,
And these two especially:
Not sure you can really beat the sub tbh.
Maybe not as legible as some but a classic none the less
Classic divers should be vintage IMHO (20-30 years old?). Real vintage dive watches are the Omega Ploprof, Blancpain FF, Rolex and Tudor Submariners (M.N. versions of the latter), Rolex Seadwellers 1665, all Comex and Spirotechnique stuff, Aquastar Benthos, All Jenny/Caribbean stuff, Seiko 6105's etc. etc. I also would like to mention the Eterna KonTiki, used by f.i. Israeli Naval Commandos Shayetet-13. Now I'm falling into my own trap, because the one I have is a reissue of the type and is less than 2 years old. But I want to show it anyway.
MM300 its a re-issue of a classic Seiko diver, but I think it is a modern classic...
