Which would you keep? Sinn U1 or Seiko Sumo

Ok i know there is little comparision in price, but then that is in some ways my point.

I need to sell either my Seiko Sumo orrr my Sinn U1 (pictures below for those who can't picture them)

Quality wise the Sinn is superior, it streaks ahead in pretty much every respect. The only hurdle it falls at is value for money, which in my opinion the Seiko sumo is the king of value for money divers (can be had second hand for £270 ish)

Now both are automatics divers watches, both are good for beaters, however based PURELY on looks which would you have?

    Seiko SUMO:

    SINN U1:

    A rushed side by side:

Both very nice, but based just on looks I'd keep the U1

A tough call. I've had both and liked them a lot. I think Sumo is classically better looking, while the U1 an awesome tool. If money was no object, I'd keep the Sinn, as it looks that bit more special.

Based on looks the Sumo has it for me. A tough one though!

Sumo for me. It looks more versatile than the Sinn.

Also, seeing a lume is part of the look (practicality as well) the Seiko is top trumps there too, the Sinn is actually a little week when it comes to lume and some what depressing.
Thanks for the thoughts so far..

The U1 all day long for me. The look is so distinctive whereas the Seiko looks like any number of other divers.

"based PURELY on looks"... it has to be the Sumo for me. I prefer pointy to blocky.

This question is a pause for thought kind of thing :)

Another pictureof the Sinn, which I'm kind of leaning towards at the moment.

Based purely on looks, I'd keep the Sumo. With the stats currently as 5-5, I guess that shows it's a tough one to call!

Based purely on looks I'd keep the Sinn, the Seiko is basically a fairly standard, generic diver albeit well done , whereas the Sinn is an original. Taking everything into account I'd definitely keep the Sinn, at the end of the day the Seiko is, well, just another Seiko . I am a bit biased though, I do have 4 Sinn's.

    I'd go for the Seiko...

As much as I want to like the U1, I find the hands and the bezel with those indentations not very aesthetically pleasing....

But I agree that the U1 is a more SPECIAL piece...

    Great watches

Both are great, I suspect if you moved the logo from the Sinn to the Seiko there would be a great swing in votes.

Seiko.... Great lume and a solid movement.

Even though I don't really like the hands on U1 it still looks more balanced thanks to its 22mm lug width compared to Seikos 20mm. So Sinn gets my vote this time.

Why did Seiko end up with 20mm lug width?? That's pretty much the only thing why I haven't tried one yet

Has to be the U1 for me, although I have looked hard at the Sumo before. The Sumo kind of looks just that bit too unbalanced in size ratios for me, whereas the Sinn hits all the right spots :)

OP, whereabouts in Brighton are you? I've always wanted to see the Sinn in the flesh as I've lusted after it long enough - wondered if you fancied meeting for a pint to show it off (I'm buying!)?

If one must go then I would keep the U1, however as the Sumo will raise a relatively small amount of cash I would be inclined to keep both.
Have owned both, still have the Sinn.
(would also suggest getting a Sinn rubber strap if you don't already have one)

Why does one need to go? If you need to raise max cash sell the u1 as the sumo is better vfm.

Personally the big numbers on the sumo bezel keep jumping at me so I'd keep the Sinn.

I actually have a U1 and a Blue Sumo also on an Anvil bracelet and they are both keepers. However if it came down to it I think it would be the Sumo that I would keep over the U1 as it is just so comfortable on the Anvil bracelet and whilst it is my cheapest watch it is the one that probably gets worn the most. Without that bracelet though it might be the other way around!

The Sinn. However it looks better on the Sinn rubber strap IMHO.

I've got a U1 and an Orange Sumo (which I'm wearing today). Both are keepers in my eyes, but if forced into liquidation I'd lose the Sumo first. I like the sumo (and my seikos in general) a lot. But I've never taken it on holiday / away from home working as my only watch, the Sinn has filled that role several times. Out on site, in the sea, in the pool, in the bar, in the business class lounge it works.

Bottom line I think for me is that I have lots of divers, the sumo is a nice one amongst the bunch, but it is far from unique. The U1 stands alone from a design point of view for me. The hands set it apart...

Oh and both the bracelet and the rubber are fantastic on the Sinn, and it works on a NATO / Zulu. The 20mm lugs on the Sumo are too twee for the rest of the watch, its the one thing that bugs me about it.

I very much doubt that to be honest. One of the biggest attractions of the U1 is its distinctive looks. You could remove the Sinn logo from the U1 and it would still attract the same sort of buyer. I get the impression that most Sinn owners aren't brand snobs, quite the opposite in fact.

Got a new watch, divers watch it is, had to drown the bastard to get it!

I would keep the Sinn, only because the Sumo looks like alot of other Seikos 007, 031 mainly

I've had both and it would be the Sinn every time. The U1 is a distinct and iconic piece, the Sumo is very nice, but not special enough by comparison.

I've owned the Sumo and own the U1. both are great divers. Tough choice but the U1 just edges it.

I've had all 3 colours of Sumo and I loved them all. I may acquire another in time.
BUT, this thread has encouraged me to think outside of the Swiss/Japan box I've mostly kept to.
U1 could be next for me to try.

I'm a huge fan of the black Seiko Sumo, but voted for Sinn, mainly because is different and because of its case material specs and because I would keep the more expensive watch between these two.

In terms of looks, which is your criterion, I like both, Sumo has a more classic design, while the U1 is more unique. I would personally go for the classic option, if this was my main criterion. On the other hand, it depends on what else you've got.
