I wouldnt say I have a poison but I will only buy what I like and dont worry about other peoples opinion and that goes for anything not just watches. If you like something then just go ahead, buy it and enjoy it.
On the cusp of a new incoming from a brand that has polarised opinion - could care less personally since it appeals to me and it is something I have pondered for a while.
Whilst I have never been particularly influenced by what the 'masses' like I have had many that they do.
So if you could afford something that raises a divided opinion would you, could you?.......
What's you poison and does 'popular opinion' really matter...................

I wouldn't know where to start!
I have always just bought watches that I like or find interesting.
Obviously this has cost me a lot of money over the years, but then so does Golf, and I'm rubbish at that.
So clever my foot fell off.
I bought a Skoda when they were still something of joke. I have had 3 since and that original one is still going strong - no small claim in a seaside town :-)
Alex I would say that without a doubt you are the one person on this forum that has bought/collected the most bizarre unusual wathes I have ever seen :)
You have to be applauded for that.
Andy
I own both Christopher Ward and Bremont. Nuff said.
" (Don's tin helmet.....)"
You are not as alone as you think. I bought a tin helmet from Don as well.
Graham. Preferrably the GMT in blue or red.
Ive tried most models on, and fit and finish is impeccable. Its not an "only" watch for sure, but extremely well made, and does not look at all as weird in real life as it does in pics, its no stranger than a Panerai submersible or AP ROO / Hublot King Powers, in fact, less so.
And popular opinion can suck it... lest we'd all wear stupid "2 line" non cosc Subs cause they're "so clean". Really it's "I cant afford to lose any money when i sell this on in 3 months, please reassure me it wont drop in value..."
It is the biggest Breitling and has a white dial. OMG!!!
But after worn almost every brand I like this one most of all (-:
They are not too expensive, i.e. £00s and not £000s, but I am a fan of Benarus watches. My money....my choice.
I think it's good to go against popular opinion when the mood takes you, Chris. I've done so a couple of times of late, but was surprised when this received a really warm response as I thought it would really prove to be a bit marmite...
The Perrelet was probably another one, but I really don't care whether people like my choices or not. (Actually, that's not true. We ALL like it when our choices are applauded but I really don't care if they're not.)
I lóve high end quartz in 18k, wear an EPD digital as daily, have two old ´tuned´ SsangYongs for family transport resp. farm chores and lótsa fun.
I do let popular opinion influence me as I see it as a voice of reason but that said I love Panerai which attracts a few haters
RIAC
Bremont, but then I like marmite too!!!
Problem is most of us end up flipping at some point no matter how perfect you think the watch is to start with. Pick a leftfield brand or model that goes against popular opinion and it usually loses you money in the long run.
I have a TW Steel arriving soon...
Do you reckon Bell & Ross qualify?
Explorer II, the unloved Rolex sports.
it probably doesnt go against popular opinion due to g shock being "middling" but im currently rather enjoying wearing a big fat bright orange g shock king which looks like a bangle on me.
its likely to be unpopular due to size than maker.. but i like it because its ridiculous.
usually my tastes are dead conservative so <shrug>
In terms of 'controversial' watches I've had several Grand Seikos (all wonderful), a Hublot Big Bang (less impressive) a Bremont (staggeringly good in the price range, so sorry I was a doubter before), a Bell and Ross (not bad), several Tags (never got on with them, they feel poorly made), several Panerais if that counts (they are okay but I will definitely get another some day), I'm sure there are more but I have lost count.
Quartz watches in general - an Aqua Terra or two, an Oysterquartz and a B&R Demineur. I have nothing against mechanicals and own quite a few but I take the long view - quartz was interesting and futuristic in the 70s, and still will be long after the current mechanical fad goes the way of flares ;-)
I have a u boat Classico, the smaller version.
All of mine - at least when i try to sell them!
i have a soft spot for Ti Seiko kinetics, don't ask me why.....

marchingontogether!
Nothing. Not even shoes
Bought a Graham Swordfish and got a lot of stick over that
My omega constellation with a diamond dial. Awful in pictures and perfect on the wrist with a white shirt. The absolute opposite of the macho bullsh1t sports watches that are currently in fashion.
Oh and film cameras too. Love the permanence of film.
Quartz for me.
Can't understand people's aversion to them and can't understand when people talk about 'bonding' and suchlike while setting and winding a mechanical watch.
This impulse buy
I am pretty conservative (boring!) when it comes to watches, these prob aren't everyone's cup of tea but I loved them all (except the RXW)
If I could afford one I would like to try a Corum bubble or maybe the pagoda crystal Orfina Kampfschwimmer (I know I'll get my coat but I just fancy one, can't explain why?)
Nothing too leftfield but this is as off the beaten track as its got over the years in an otherwise straight-laced world of Sinn/Omega/Seiko:
When not in rubber wellies I wear swedish clogs in/around the farm during winter and fake crocs as a warmer weather version. In spring & summer I will be mainly barefoot and barefoot in those crocs for all but going out.
Meddlesome legislation forbids me driving a vehicle on public roads barefoot The clogs too btw
When I first got into watches my decisions as to what to buy were based solely on my own taste - I haven't found the need to change that approach. There is no doubt that exposure to the internet has broadened massively anyone's exposure to a vast array of watches - and opinions on them. It still comes down to personal taste, for every thread praising a particular watch there'll be plenty of others with a disapproving tone. My money, my choice. As stated elsewhere in the thread, whilst not seeking approval for a particular choice, it is nice to receive positive feedback - and there's always someone that will like it too.

Alongside my mainstream penchant for Omegas, I like vintage digitals, LEDs especially.
Popular opinion generally turns me away from something rather than towards it. Most of my watches go against the general likes (Seiko Ananta, Oris BC4 Flight Timer, etc.), and I'd quite like a Corum Bubble or even one of the AC in a smaller size. I wouldn't mind a Seiko Landmaster SD either.
