I've invested in a fair few KickStarter projects - this one shall certainly be getting my money!

I lost many a month to Elite: Frontier.

Not too keen on the name, Elite: Dangerous...

Wasn't Dangerous the level below Elite in the original game? I agree it looks a bit naff but isn't that where it's come from?

The original games sucked up a lot of my teenage years. God bless my old 200mhz pentium IBM. If you guys liked this I would recommend you have a look at EVE online. Yes its an online game but it is staggeringly complex and beautiful.

It was two levels below - Dangerous, Deadly, Elite.

Spot the guy who devoted months of his life to this, and the follow-ups "Frontier" and "Frontier:First Encounters".

    Yes, that'd be me.

I spent many happy hours being engrossed in the original game on my BBC Micro in the '80s. And it ran in 32K. Incredible.

Was interested to see this earlier, but there are some quite passable more recent variations of the game. This is very good:

Well I've chucked my £20 in the pot. I have a horrible suspicion it will be pants but it's worth a gamble seeing as I loved the game so much as a kid (played it on my first computer - an Acorn Electron)

Right, I've just pledged five hundred quid to this don't tell the wife.

Come on chaps, dig deep, or at least do a tenner, it will be fabulous!

A really exciting project to be a part of....

£500 notes! You will be in trouble once she sees a space station named after you.

I look forward to space docking (probably best the weak of mind do not google that term) with SS-TFB.

One week left, inching up to the total, they should just about get there. Plenty of info on it in the updates and video logs.

    Come on...

I'm in for £20, thanks for bringing this to my attention!

    TheFlyingBanana - £500! Good effort.

So its a MMORPG is it? and if you have loads of money to burn you get a big powerful butt kicker ship and wipe out all the guys in cheaper stuff?
What then , you lose your stake, sort of like a gamble?

Lots to think about I guess but here is an initial answer. I don't play MMOORPGGS thingies but I suppose it's pretty high up in their list of things to address.

How do we plan to address PvP (player vs player) “griefing”?An obvious danger is an advanced player with a big well-armed ship in a busy system spends their time just picking off beginners, for fun.
To understand how this will be stopped requires a little bit of understanding how real player ships will be treated slightly differently to non-player ships. Players will automatically be part of a “Pilot’s Federation” and will be identified as such, together with their ranking and name. Bounties are paid by this Federation – something that is therefore much higher for those that kill other Federation members. It will be balanced so that this cannot be used as an exploit (so a beginner killing a beginner is taken less seriously than an Elite pilot killing a beginner – it will be based on the ranking difference).
There are four separate ways we will address this:
    1. The offender will very quickly get a serious price on their head (bounty) and criminal record. That price on their head will attract bounty hunters.
    2. Local police or military will respond very quickly and strongly to them.
    3. It will be legitimate for other players to attack them for the attractive bounty without attracting a bounty for themselves, as once there is a bounty on their head they are officially a pirate and ‘free game’ for everyone.
    4. If enough players complain about the offender's behaviour in a certain time, then they will be banned from this group.

    Come on chaps!

Now is the time to pledge if you haven't already - they are nearly there, but just a final push needed to secure the funding.

I've upped my pledge already, and they have now added some excellent extra goodies you can get ranging from signed art prints to scale models of the ships.

Make a pledge - this may well be the greatest game ever and give you years of challenge and pleasure.

Plus that really hot technology journalist Kate Russell seems to be all over it too...

New "Elite" game via Kickstarter - I'm in!

    I'm in.

I made deadly on spectrum elite, cpc elite and both frontier and ffe. I still play a recompiled version of ffe on my laptop - one of the very best games ever.

Where does it say how near or far from the target they are? And why is there a deadline if jan 4th for a project that will go on for years? Seems a very artificial deadline - and I am a programmer by trade so doubly strange to me. Deadlines in coding are very flexible things in reality. :)

    See main page here http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/...lite-dangerous

It's funded via the Kickstarter website. People set their target funding and number of days, if the target is not met then they get nothing. The development will go on and final delivery estimated at Mar-2014 in this case.

Funding target is £1,250,000 (in 60 days) they have £1,033,000 so far but only 7 days to go. Believe Kickstarter take 5%.

    Thanks for the explanation.

But as a massive elite fan it is a shame I only heard of this a week before the deadline. Not much time to bore my mates rigid is there? Lol

    Very very nearly there!

Come on chaps - pledge now! Be involved in the design, testing, get the goodies, get THE game!

Look at the artwork and demo vids of gameplay.

Check out the comments too - very exciting stuff.

No. Eve Online is a bit like Elite, but significantly inferior in my opinion.

    Elite was first and best.

Hmmm, did you read the link?

Kickstarter is an alternative method of raising funds. Banks and VCs are obviously others. Software development isn't free.

yes but - normally an investment is made, a product is developed which then has a value.

the product is then sold either as a capital asset or to people who want to use it

money is then made and part of this is returned to the Investors or distributed as "dividends" and the like

All I saw was finance me - I'll keep the money without any recognition of ownership to the "investor"

Well then, you didn't read it very carefully. Read down the right hand side of the screen. Different pledge amounts give the pledger different things (copies of the game, inclusion in the game, t shirts etc etc).

    It's made the news: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-20897768

OT: EVE Online is limited as a single player game. The multiplayer side of EVE is breathtaking in its scope and scale.

    From today's update email:

"We have now passed the first stretch goal - we are now doing a Mac version in addition to the PC version, to be released three months after the PC version."

    Wahoo!

Well TFB, they made it and then some at £1,578,316 and 25k+ backers. The pressure is on them now to do the game justice. I just snook in for £20 as I'm not a big game player. I assume you're part if the Design Decision Forum - don't go signing any non-disclosure agreements - you're our insider on this and we expect 'in-the-know' updates.

Got to say it's hard to see how they will offer a free multiplayer option without monthly subscription fees - with thousands of players they will need a serious server.

p.s. Who'd have thought you'd be the biggest supporter of the most capitalist of games

p.p.s Will you be requesting a Banana shaped space station?

So, time has moved on, and I have been following the development of the new game.

Just released today, would you like to see some actual in-game battle footage? This is in-game graphics running on a high-spec PC.

W.O.W. That is looking awesome. I spent waaay to much time playing Elite in the 80s and other than a brief addition to Monster Truck Madness I haven't played computer games since. Looks like I may have to invest in a new joystick.....
