Please elaborate.
Ok, so I'm looking for a blue SMP quartz as a beater, but which one is the best bang for buck at the moment? Is here any real difference between the feel of them?
Please elaborate.
In what way? I'm trying to find out if there's any difference in the feel of the different models (rather than the cosmetic differences) and if there's a certain model that is undervalued compared to the others. It looks as if the price can vary from £899 for a 2531 to £1200-1400 for a new model.
Full size 41mm versions is the way to go. If you go for the original 2541.80.00 (Not 2531, that's the auto) then expect to pay around £6-800 for a pre-owned one.
If you would like the newer 2221.80.00, with more vibrant colour, more pronounced wave design, red writing, applied logo and indices as well as longer hands and a redesigned caseback, expect to pay around £850+ pre-owned, but both models are appreciating now they are discontinued.
My old 2221 which I sold a few weeks ago for £875:
2264.50 is the one (I know it's black but it's the best one)
See JCowley's REVIEW - SMP Bond 2541 thread, although its main focus is the 2541.80.00 (as the title suggests!) its serves as a great little quick reference guide to all of the main SMP variants that have been mentioned here, definitely worth a look I'd suggest
And don't forget not all 2541's are the same. Some of the early ones used Tritium and not SL on the dial and these tend to age (yellow) very nicely. Had an old 2541 and it was probably my favorite dial with the aged yellow indices on the darker blue wave dial. Didn't glow much though.
Hiya. IMOP there have not been any changes to the feel of the bracelet for a long time until the release of the 2221.80.00 which you wouldn't want as a beater . Prices remain consistent but dependant on age and condition be prepared to pay £800-£1000 with all box and papers. You might get for less but that would be dependant on condition. Hope that helps
regards
T
My two year old quartz black bond went for 900... I would say it was in very good condition...
Silvered markers, deeper wave, red accents, nicer than the current version IMHO

Sword hands are much better for lume than the bayonet hands - the 2265.80 would be my choice, if I were going for a blue dial. There's one currently for sale - head only on a brown Toshi for $1100 on WUS (I've no connection with the seller).

If its a beater you're after, maybe look for a mid sized one. It's going to be less likely to get knocked do much and I would think they'll also be a little cheaper.
I originally bought a mid size SMP but after wearing it for a while came to the conclusion that it was just too small for a diver notwithstanding the fact that my daily wearer is 36mm.
The mid size SMP looked much better on my wife so she now has it and I've now got a full size SMP which is ideal.

Thanks folks, the blue 2264 looks too dressy and the mid size I fear would be too small for me. I'm already looking to sell my Gen-1 to fund this as its's too small for me. I had thought that the skeleton hands didn't have enough lume until I saw pictures recently. It looks as if the 2541 prices are higher in relative terms than the 2221 though, which is interesting.

I bought a BNIB one, stickers and all from SC a few months ago for just over a grand. That was just before the recent upsurge in interest in the outgoing SMP quartzes so I believe I got a pretty good deal. I also don't think it would hang around now quite so long as it did (was a couple of weeks or so) then. Just linking this to the SC thread ....timing and general mood of your market changes very quickly.
I had the Black version of the 2221.80.00 above, great watch. Missed every day!
Thanks again, does the second hand align perfectly on these?
Nope.
Of the 5 SMP quartz I have owned, only one aligned perfectly, but not all the way around the dial, approx 70%. That was the best I had ever seen. Poor quality control IMO but just a quirk of most quartz SMP's.
As for the lume on the 2221:
I'm surprised to hear you say the 2541 is demanding more money. Not from what I've seen. The 2221 is the later, and much improved watch IMO. £800-£1000 easy, but I wouldn't pay more than £700 for a 2541.
