    Latest Build completed.

    Pleased with this one.

ETA 2824-2 movement. Bought a Cousins Loose Pack movement, stripped, cleaned and oiled.

Case is from the USA - finally arrived this morning after weeks of angst! Came with a bill for £25 VAT etc :-(

    Nice solid screwed bracelet too.

    So, now it's all together.

Not sure it's all that unique! A simliar one was on SC recently - but I think that was Quartz powered. Thanks for the compliment though! I am getting to enjoy building them more than wearing them.

Looks good. How hard is it to build something like this? I'm tempted to give it a go. Must google for some online resources.

It's not at all hard - just takes patience, the right tools and more patience!

Building is easy - the servicing the movement is a bit more involved!

I think I might leave movement servicing to someone who knows what they're doing to start with!

    Nice job, looks very good.

Nice job there, looks very pro built!

Now can you explain to us uneducated lot what a 'loose pack' movement refers to?

"Loose Pack" in Cousins terms is a movement they've bought (it appears to generally be bankrupt stock) so they are unused but often not band new. Their website says:

These movements have been supplied from the factory in non-sealed bulk packaging originally destined to be fitted
to watch cases for the retail market. Whilst all will be complete and in working order, the lubrication may be subject
to normal deterioration during transport and storage and may require some servicing prior to fitting.
ETA movements are generally supplied with standard height cannon & hour wheels, however this may vary with
    "Loose Pack".

I've found with the ones I've bought (about 4) that they seem pretty standard and are clean and ready to go really. All the one's I've bought though have had the rotor branded "W H Wilmot" who were until about 2009 a watchmakers based in the Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham before they went into receivership. So the movements are at least 4 or so years old, but unused and generally sealed up OK.

I've always stripped and serviced them, but to be honest, they've usually looked pretty much OK before I started - so probably would be fine to just build straight up and see how they run.

They are about £50 cheaper than a brand new movement though.

One of the watches I've built has the Seagull ST2130 movement - a fair chunk cheaper again, but an identical copy of the 2824-2 and just as reliable as far as I can see. It's also capable of micro-regulation to within a very few seconds a week with care.

Looks good. Always impressed with a self build as it looks complicated to do!

I need to Google some instructions to see exactly what is involved.

    Thanks!

Have built a few now (a very few) I am more amazed than ever that Eddie can produce the watches he does for the price. He must cost his time at tuppence an hour!

I like the look of that, and I'm always impressed with people who can put watches together well. What really impresses me though is your comment that the case only arrived this morning!

    Heh.

Once you're prepared and have serviced the movement, actually fitting the dial, hands and casing it all up doesn't take long. Half an hour I suppose.

Very impressed. I keep telling myself I should do some kind of course or develop some of these skills one way or the other. Must be quite a sense of acheivement.

It is a nice feeling, when you're telling the time on something you've built yourself.

Not exactly in the same league as Thomas Tompion, but it's still good :-)

Not sure - can we file it under "it seemed a good idea at the time"?

    I actually quite like them.

Have you tried any decals yet? Just to add interest to the dial

I have, in the past, but with limited success.

I've tried printing - trouble is it needs to be both tiny and dead sharp.

I might try some white letraset. That might work out ok.

I've engraved inside the back - nice and simple - "Simon Atkinson made me" and the date.

Nice job Simes. Very tempting to have a go... But I'm not sure my skills stretch that far. Must be very rewarding. I've swapped hands on a few watches and a bezel or two and even that makes me like the watch so much more than others, so I can really appreciate the pleasure. Anyway, well done!

    Thanks Draygo.

If you can change hands etc you can build a watch.

  25. #25
That's very nice work Simes, love the hands ;) I've done a few home builds, nice feeling when you've put them together. It's amazing how awkward hands placing and correct date alignment is to start and then how easy it seems later on when you've done it 100 times ;) . Although I've never serviced a movement I've managed to get finicky things like repairing the keyless down to about 20 mins...compared to the 3 or 4 hours when I first did it :D That watch looks very sweet, and tempting...where did you get the cases?

btw those Seagull ST2130 are pretty damn good movement, never had an issue with them. The 2892 version also feels very solid. Much cheaper than eta for the same trill :)

That looks very good! I am most impressed. This has rekindled my desire to build one of my own.

Do you mind me asking: From whom did you get the case, dial and hands?

Case, dial and hands were all from eBay seller: sizzlinwatches.

Slow to arrive (from US) but price and quality are good. He had it up for $160 or best offer - I offered $120 and he accepted.
