Heuer BLACK BAY Diver.. yes, you read that right...

    Purists, look away now...

So, I had a basket case of a Heuer oversized 42mm two-tone gilt dialed diver.. it sat tucked away in the back of a drawer, then Tudor released the gorgeous Black Bay.. and I got busy..

I am not a fan of Heuer at all, but that is a great piece.

I don't like the 'growths' on the hour and second hands, but other than that, it is lovely.

    Good job, Stewart.

    That's pretty tasty

My gay friends are always telling me that there is nothing wrong with a spot of buggery, they tell me that I should try it, cause I might find that I like it.

What I see here is a watch that has been well and truely buggerd. But strangely I like it, I like it a lot. (not telling my friends that though).

Ah, the Heuer they should have made.

Nice looking watch, I'd join the queue for one.

I really don't understand this sentiment.

The BB is a watch that draws on crown guard-less Rolexes and Tudor Snowflakes, while adding a spot of colour. It's a watch that's born of a mix of models form various times and brands.

Why would Heuer (of all people) have made such a watch?

Surely Heuer was (largely) a brand that forged their own path - a brand that brought us the Seafarer, Manaco, Autavia, Manhattan and Jarama.

Why would you wish that they plagiarised such a thing?

Most odd (in my, very humble, opinion).

How about a blue bezel non-gilt dial version?

Your humble opinion is right of course.

Heuer (and other manufacturers it has to be said) did produce individual pieces that were different to other manufacturers. But I'd note, that Heuer did also use a number of generic cases and bracelets which can be seen used by other manufacturers (Lemania, Lejour, Tourneau, Clebar etc.). I am lucky enough to own a 510.501 (which I'm wearing as I type this) but I've also seen a version by Lejour which is almost identical. I keep posting a link to this interesting article concerning the relationship between Heuer and Lemania which does indicate that generic cases, dials, hands and movements were used by a number of brand names:

    http://www.calibre11.com/heuer-lemania-part-one/

    http://www.calibre11.com/heuer-lemania-part-two/

I think the point of this is that we all buy into the proposition that the watch we wear is individual but to manufacturers the watch is constructed from a number of off-the-shelf components put together in a number of ways that are an attempt to make it individual.

The watch that the OP has constructed has a number of elements that I like - the red bezel, snowflake hands, bracelet and so on. There are Hueur divers with black bezels and mercedes hands that aren't too far from other manufacturers models. I'm thinking of Rolex of course, but there are lots of other models from all sorts of manufacturers that are variations on the same theme.

I originally meant the comment as an off-the-cuff light hearted remark that seemed funny at the time I typed it. I should have perhaps thought longer before posting. But it does seem to me that it's led at least to an interesting line of debate. Of course you may choose to differ.

Shouldn't work but somehow it just does..... I like it. Red black and gilt are obviously a winning combo.

    Thanks for the comments chaps.
I'd not really noticed before, but I think the snowflake hands work well with the Heuer angled shield - similar angles, if that makes sense.

**tries not to sound keen as mustard, fails**

If you're not kidding, yes please.

Feel free to take as long as you want though.

**goes off to raise funds in some nefarious manner**

    EDIT

Whoops, just seen how popular this thread is. Happy to wait my turn or if I miss out this time, keep me on the list for future innovations.

that's really, really nice & great work, i like that a lot, an awful lot

if you can make seiko divers or orients (or any other relatively inexpensive easily obtainable watch) look like i think you could sell em like hot cakes on a winters day to us forum folk

You could take a look at 10watches/dagaz. Jake has chocolate brown dial, rose gilt hand set and burgundy bezel insert for seiko bb mods. I believe the dial and hands would fit orients but finding a fitting insert would be difficult.

as someone who's changed one battery on my mrs watch & taken the case off his watch 3 times (did eventually manage a half decent regulation tho) i think dial/bezel/hand projects are only aspiration at the mo

tempting tho, thanks very much for the tip, guess i gotta start somewhere.....

    thanks again

That looks great. So great in fact that I got distracted looking after my three year old who has drawn over my beige fabric sofa. Arrrrghhh kids!

Anyway, back on topic, lovely looking piece and it's great to see it not being used as a parts watch.

Yet lag and 8month old baby means I really thought i was looking at a Blackbay at first, even the OBVIOUS Heuer script and quartz labeling did not register at first.
    However I want it!

Not for me I'm afraid but well done for pulling together something unusual and fun. No idea why but I hate snowflake hands on anything except a tudor. Irrational...
