Very interesting site, slightly alarming when you see the amount of air traffic displayed like that.

    Thanks for posting.

How good is the app? Some of the flight trackers have gotten poor reviews thus far.

I have been impressed - even coughed up for the Pro version.
There are other apps available to do the same thing, but I rate this the highest.

We use a professional system for tracking aircraft in my office. Its a superb piece of kit. We can overlay weather etc on to the maps.

Are there any significant advantages to the upgrade to pro?

    I love this review:

    Oddly, a lot of fun

by Happy w/Radio 5-0I have never, ever listened to a Police Scanner before, & truly thought those who did were Redneck Freaks.

But I gotta admit, it's really a lot of fun! Perhaps aural voyeurism - I dunno.

At 3.50pm according to this, there's NOTHING flying over Africa, apart from the coast bordering the Med and literally only 2 or 3 on the SA coast. Not one !! Over the whole continent !!?

How's that possible ? Does it only show international flights, not internal flights ?

I think it's primarily focusing on flights in Europe.

    Re: track flights live.....

It is reliant on enthusiasts uploading the info. This is achieved via a Mode S box.
Not all aircraft have a Mode S transponder giving out the enhanced information, so they will not be displayed eg Flybe and Eastern aircraft in the UK, and most military aircraft.
As these Mode S boxes only pick up aircraft in line of sight, large areas such as Africa would require a much larger number of enthusiasts.
It is quite obvious that there are many more enthusiasts in Europe and the US, and people with the disposable income to purchase the equipment.

I don't think it uses Mode S; it only uses ADS-B transponders which are (to the best of my knowledge) not necessarily the same box as a Mode S transponder.

As you say, coverage is dependent on enthusiasts contributing data from their ADS-B receivers (and historically this has mostly been in Europe) but there is also the issue that not all passenger aircraft currently have ADS-B transponders. At present there are some aircraft types that do you have ADs-B transponders but, as I understand it, almost all new passenger aicraft worldwide will have ADS-B.

There's an about page here: http://www.flightradar24.com/about

    **edit**
Mode S versus ADS-B from the about page:
I work at an airline, and our aircraft are equipped with ModeS-transponder but not visible on your map, why?

Our receivers can receive signals from ModeS-transponders, but there is no position information from ModeS, so we cannot plot this aircraft on the map. Your have to upgrade the transponder in the airplane to ADS-B / VDL 4 to be visible on Flightradar24.com.

I was wondering why Europe was so crowded but not so much USA. It says

Flightradar24 shows live airplane traffic from different parts around the world. The technique to receive flight information from aircraft is called ADS-B. That means the Flightradar24 can only show information about aircraft equipped with an ADS-B transponder. Today about 60% (about 30% in USA and about 70% in Europe) of the passenger aircraft and only a small amount of military and private aircraft have an ADS-B transponder.

Just downloaded the free version. No more squinting in the sky - just the wanting to be on a flight to some exotic location!

That is amazing. I can't believe the number of flights in the air of the US! Make no wonder they are worried about the oil running out!

I have the planefinder pro app on my iphone. Very cool app, with all the info any plane spotter would want. Works a charm.

If anyone's into that sort of thing, you can buy all sorts of decoders that plug in a laptop and give you almost an ATC screen in front of you.

As has been said, not all aircraft track on the screen, mostly airliners and the odd private exec jet. Something I never grew out of as a kid so take mine all over the place with me. Wouldn't want to explain it in some countries but it keeps me quiet while we're away, like now!!

If anyone is interested, try googling kinetic sbs decoders, thst's the one I've used for years. Sorry not got any web sites, but like I said, I'm away at the mo.

Another one is called micro adsb, that's a lot smaller and easier to carry.

If you get into it, then can use something called plane plotter that has pretty much everything on it, including military flights!
