    OMG!

If you think that the expression OMG is a product of Internet-era txt spk, think again ..

Whether Churchill replied with "LMAO!" is not known.

Whole chunks of my life come under the heading "it seemed like a good idea at the time".

I prefer (in reply to Nancy Astor saying 'Sir, if you were my husband I would give you poison'):

If you were my wife I would drink it!

Unfortunately, this is now generally recognised as a misattribution. Richard Langworth in his recently published book Churchill By Himself: The Definitive Collection of Quotations lists it in the appendix entitled 'Red Herrings: False Attributions' with the following analysis:

Official biographer Martin Gilbert (In Search of Churchill p232) suggested the author was F.E. Smith, Lord Birkenhead, "a much heavier drinker than Churchill, and a notorious acerbic wit". But Fred Schapiro (Yale Book of Quotations) says the riposte dates back even farther to a joke line in the Chicago Tribune of 3 January 1900: "'If I had a husband like you,' she said with concentrated scorn, 'I'd give him poison!' 'Mad'm,' he rejoined, looking her over with a feeble sort of smile, 'If I had a wife like you I'd take it.'" Verdict: F.E. Smith, giving new life to an old wisecrack.

Pete, I found FIVE different versions in less than five minutes of researching it! In the end I left it at the last correction, as I couldnt find any concensus.

    That's pretty interesting.

It's amazing how many times we think a phrase or whatever is modern but find that it was used in antiquity.
    Cheers,
    Neil.
