    Best car related films?

I was browsing HMV yesterday and found DVDs of the original Gone In 60 Seconds (£3) and The French Connection 1 and 2 (£6). Going to have a few boys' nights to try to stop this tinnitus I get at home. We've seen Le Mans, Bullitt, Ronin and that sort of thing (but strangely enough none of us have seen Gone In 60 Seconds), can you suggest any good driving or car related films along the lines of Two-Lane Blacktop and Vanishing Point?

C'etait un rendevous is a classic but maybe less of a movie and more of an extended trailer. Awesome though.

Given that you like Vanishing Point and Two Lane Blacktop I'd suggest Five Easy Pieces, and - for me the best British road movie - Radio On. It's excellent, and if you like Kraftwerk then all the better. The 'Sweet Gene Vincent' sequence is lovely too. (And don't be put off by the fact that Sting is in it. He's actually not bad.)

    I presume you've seen 'Senna'?

    If not, it's absolutely superb.

For a Boys Night circa 1987 try "The Wraith" with Charlie Sheen and Sherilyn Fenn. Got to be in a bargain bin somewhere.
Just make sure it's not the first film of the night and you've had "a few" drinks when you put it on.
We used to enjoy playing spot the shot without the cameraman's shadow in it!!!

Thanks for all the suggestions, keep them coming! I've seen a few of these, forgot about Un Homme Et Une Femme, I saw parts of it a few years ago and will get hold of a copy. Five Easy Pieces and Radio On also sound good.

Another vote for this one, it's been a long time since I've watched it and have the soundtrack on cassette (remember those?) somewhere.

Plus if I remember right, Sherilyn Fenn gets her puppies out

The 1960's "Grand Prix" with James Garner is worth a watch, groriously dated but with some excellent driving sequences that were all filmed live with giant Panaflex movie cameras bolted to the cars. James Garner did all his own driving as did a number of the actors. They also had a fair number of the F1 drivers of the day, Graham Hill, Jochan Rindt, etc appear. The DVD also comes with a "how we filmed it" extra which is also fascinating.

Also you should add "Le Mans" with Steve McQueen to the list, minimal dialog (and story), good driving sequences, and generally moody and magnificent. Also good for watch spotting

    enjoy

Depends if you mean car film, or film with good cars in, or film that involves bits of good cars or chases? The lattergives quite a lot of options :)

  18. #18
Sticking with the current '70s theme you could try The Driver, Dirty Mary Crazy Larry and Grand Theft Auto :)

Herbie? It is car related - though not in a good way.

The original (1998) "Taxi" is a lot of fun. Predictably the 2004 hollywood remake was not!

Surprised nobody has mentioned "Duel" yet.

"The Hitcher" (original version with Rutger Hauer) is car related & quite scary too.

"Breathless" (Richard Gere) & the original "A Bout De Souffle" may also float your boat (other mixed metaphors are also
    available)

As all of the decent car-related films have been mentioned in the thread already, have you considered real-life footage?

A friend of mine has some of the older F1 seasons (60, 70s and 80s) and it's just as good to watch these as it is to see Le Mans or Grand Prix. Watching the old racers being interviewed while they hold a bottle of champagne and a Marlboro girl on each arm is quite entertaining.

  24. #24
Can you buy old F1 series then ? Sounds interesting...

I like the original French 'Taxi' series as well. I remember seeing a film in Germany in the early 90's called 'Manta Manta'; can you guess what it's about?

Oh, there was a nice British film called 'Soft Top, Hard Shoulder' which featured either a Triumph Herald which was about Peter Capaldi driving from London to Glasgow. I enjoyed it!http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soft_Top_Hard_Shoulder

particularly the bit at the start where the clock reaches 4.00, the heartbeat noise stops, and McQueens Porsche 917 explodes into life....spine tingling indeed

Now I've had a little think, here's a few for a night in:

    The Gumball Rally (1976)

    The Great Race (1965)

Monte Carlo Or Bust (1969) -- great cast...

    Smokey & The Bandit (1977)

    The Cannonball Run (1981)

These are all great "switch off your brain & enjoy" movies.

If it's a boys night in, I'd also suggest some Russ Meyer. There's usually a muscle car or two to be seen amongst the
    humungous teetos...

No Ronin yet? Great car chase scenes and pretty good movie to boot! Audi S8 FTW!The second Bourne film (Supremacy) with him in the taxi being chased by the Merc G-Wagen is an epic sequence.

Hi Matt, yes there are a few suppliers apparently but the ones I've seen are from Duke Video (dukevideo.com). Well worth a look (I've sent them as presents and they've been very well-received).

Duel - the original and best.

Roadkill - Modern day equivalent of sorts.

Both road movies rather than being about the cars..but excellent.

'Collateral' by Michael Mann is primarily set in a Los Angeles cab.

It was one of the first major feature films to be shot on digital. The result is some really lucid images of LA at night.

The story concerns a hitman (Tom Cruise) who forces a taxi cab driver (Jamie Foxx) to drive him from hit to hit, all in the space of one night.

The driving isn't as furious as in, say, Bullitt or Ronin; but there are a few good hi-octane driving scenes.

It's a good film and a decent choice if you've got friends over.

I don't know if it's been mentioned yet but, I loved the chase scene in Against All Odds. Ferrari 308 GTS v Porsche 911 Convertible.

As an aside, there are some great vehicle chase scenes in The Dark Knight Rises. I was lucky to see a preview screening yesterday, but I won't spoil it for you.

+1 to The Transporter films...perfect for a 'beer and farting' lads night in.

    Days Of Thunder
    The French Connection
    Mad Max
    Disneys Cars (don't knock it!)

Various Bond Movies...loads of them have decent car chases

And come on people....longest car chase ever?....The Blues Brothers

It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses.

Don't think anyone has mentioned 'Grand Prix' from 1966 - young stud James Garner vs. old dog Yves Montand. A tad long, but a great look at grand prix racing in the sixties. And with the scrummy Françoise Hardy.
