    New York, recommendations in October

    Afternoon All,

I'm visiting NYC with the misses for two weeks in October and was wondering if you guys could recommend any must things to do/check out and most importantly any good places to eat?

(It's my first time and boy I'm looking forward to it :D )

    Thanks in advance,
    Alex

Download the NYC mate subway app, and timeout's travel guide and new york events apps. all free and show you things by location as well.

    The High Line

    The tenement museum

the disused city hall subway station (needs booking.)

Its a great city but damn expensive. Suggest you invest in a city pass for the main tourist things - it'll save you a bomb.

Get down to Bleeker St in Greenwich Village in the Evening and check out Slanes (Irish bar), 1849 New York bar - music with DJ, does food - very busy, Red Lion - live music, very busy. Theres a great atmosphere in all of them. You could always visit the Comedy Cellar too to see some up and coming comedians, very enjoyable.
As well as all the usual, Empire State Building - get there early to avoid queues, Rockefeller Building, you get a great view of Central Park and the Empire state from the top of that one and Statue of Liberty tours. Pier 17 is worth a look, the Brooklyn Bridge is great to walk over and take pictures and catch a ride on the Staten Island Ferry, even if you come straight back - it's free. :)
The open top bus tours are well worth a go, sounds naff, but they are really informative and you'll see stuff you wouldn't on your own. We went on one in the evening and it was great. We also did a show on Broad street - Mama Mia. Brilliant.

    I love New York :)

A couple of year ago, a few friends and I went to watch the Mets play baseball at Citifield, it is something different and good entertainment for a few hours (we went on a sunday am), it is easy to get to by subway from Times Square

If the Yankees are in the Wold Series, try and score tickets. The Mets will not be playing in October though unless, by some stroke of divine intervention, they are in the World Series.

Def go to a Broadway show. Hit any of the good Irish Pubs, a couple mentioned above, and goto Little Italy for dinner one night. The Diamond District and watch shops are obviously a must... as are a few Sabrett hot dogs from a corner vendor! :D

Coney Island ( if it s still open) subway across town and really easy to get to.
    Usual places,
Top of The Rock for the skyline at sunset.
The HighLine is really good, I think more of it will have opened since we were there mid May last year.
Staten Island ferry , Yankees if they make the World Series.
Food wise , it s hard to recommend . there ll be new ones opening and closing all the time.
Just get a sandwich in a deli on day one and that should see you through until the second week easily. Then go and get a steak :)

Intrepid Air & Space museum to see the Entrprise.

If it is the right weekend 10/12 to 10/14 the New York Comic Con is in the Javits center. Well worth it if you are into it. I'll be there all three days with the 501st.

Tons of museums to visit depending on your intrest.

Diamond district as well as 5th ave for the watches, stay away from Canal street.

Join the Dive Watch Connection lots of New Yorkers on that forum and they have a weekly GTG usually Wednesday night.

Eataly is worth a visit:http://eatalyny.com/, It's Italian food heaven with a great rooftop covered bar, plus it's near the Flatiron building so worth a look.

Plus why not sign up for Fat Dave's Five Borough Wheels of Steel tour: http://www.famousfatdave.com/. he's a Yellow Cab driver who does the best food tours, well worth it, he even managed to keep both happy on a tour with a meat fiend and a vegan!!

If you or your wife are TV addicts pop into St Patricks cathedral, it's the cathedral from every NY police or mafia show where they hold the big funerals/eulogies, we were lucky enough to be there during a special service for the Police Commisioner and it was just like being in a film, surrounded by dress blues and SWAT guys

A trip over the river to new Jersey is a nice thing to do, to see Manhattan skyline from over that side.

We stayed in mid town last year (between 28 and 29 on Lexington) and found this area fantastic. Some lovely bars and restaurants and a lot less touristy. Another nod for the baseball, we went to see the Yankees twice a few years back and as a none baseball fan, we actually loved it.

It's nice down at Brooklyn bridge park too. A lovely walk and a great relaxing place with nice sights. I also prefer the rockerfeller over the empire state as you can see more on top of rockerfeller.

If you're not seeking a particular Broadway show, buy tickets on the day of the show at the TKTS booth in Times Square - the tickets will be roughly half price, and are frequently quite good seats.

If you want to go to Comic Con, buy your tickets in advance on-line, or you may get shut out.

You can visit the new World Trade Center museum, but must buy tickets in advance. Nearby is the NYSE, Federal Hall, and the Fed building, all free to see from outside.

Free sights to see include the already mentioned Staten Island ferry - its about 1/2 hour to Staten Island, same back, free, and great view of the harbor and Statue of Liberty. On Oct 10 is the Columbus Day parade - 35,000 people struting down 5th avenue. Take a walk around Central Park - the city's noise disappears almost immediately, kind of like St. James Park.

Near Central Park - the Musuem of Natural History; also many art musuems, depending on your tastes. If athletically inclined, Chelsea Piers.

Check http://www.nyctourist.com - its got some good stuff.

Ellen Stardust diner - cheap food & staffed by broadway stars between jobs so they belt out show tunes, great fun for an hour or two, but they do belt them out !

Rockefeller Centre, (top of the rock) better (or at least the same) views as Empire State Building without the queues.

Come out to the Island and I'll grill you a Ronnie burger and give you a few beers (most likely Bass).

When the weather is nice: The Boat House, Central Park. Really a nice place to have lunch. The 9/11 Memorial; very, very impressive. Best to reserve you passes before you go. Every Sunday: Hell's Kitchen Flea Market, near West 39th Street & 9th Ave. A nice place to eat: The Oyster Bar in Grand Central Terminal.

    Have fun!

Intrepid museum is fantastic if you're into military stuff, plus a nice quiet break from the busy streets.

Empire during the day, Top of the Rock at night - best of both views IMO. The celebs going to the Jimmy Kimmel TV show come through Rockefeller on way to recording, look for the crowds and grab an autograph.

Defo a Broadway show (go to a big name one like a movie star) saw Hugh Jackman's one-man show which was utterly brilliant!

Food everywhere - if you like burgers get a Five Guys, absolute top notch (even better than the famous hidden place at Parker Meridien hotel).

And, as mentioned, Central Park - amazingly tranquil, the squirrels are a hoot.

I'd chop off a nut to live in NYC
