Least manly thread of the week... (UPDATE on page 4)

My iron has started leaking and dripping water when I am using  it so I need a new one.

I realise it's probably unlikely, but has anyone on here bought one recently ?
(Does anyone else on here even know what an iron is ??)

I think this is kinda cool... it needs to look good !

Anyone recommend anything up to £50ish ?

Probably not the answer you re looking for but I bought a Tefal Pro Minute steam generator iron a couple of years back and it is sensational. I d imagine any of the steam irons would give similar results.
It is a girly pink colour so may not pass the cool look but my shirts havent got a single crease in them :)

What is that a picture of ?

I've never ever seen one of those.

Definitely get a steam generator iron. I have a Tefal one which gets around 40 minutes on a tank of water. Mine is an older style one which can't be filled without taking the pressure lid off. Newer ones can be filled without needing to do this. It also makes it easier to drain after use without spraying steam everywhere.

As sad as this sounds, I got the 4890 version which won What small appliance 2011, and it's pretty good.......for an iron. Course, I also bought some weights, some music equipment & a few watches, so I'm all man...

Thankfully my Wife does the ironing. She bought the same 4890 model last week and reckons it's great.
Apparently a big improvement over the Tefal it replaced.

Can't believe I've come on a watch forum and within 30 seconds bought a Philips 4890 iron from Amazon

This site should come with a warning!

Read this thread, was vaguely interested but felt slightly emasculated, so now I'm off to read the Fireblade thread.

I'm banned from ironing (hooray!) after attempting to iron a shirt a couple of weeks back and dropping the iron onto the carpet, which burnt a charming shape into said carpet before I could recover it,

+2, women can't iron for toffee - they don't do detail

Make sure you get a steam generator for sure - mine was half price from Currys for about £130

Strange looking watch? Can you tell the time by the burn marks it makes?

    try:

    http://www.maleironingaidsforum.co.uk

there's some serious kit over there.

Seriously, stick to one of the good brands (morhy richards etc) and for that price they'll all be pretty similar. I bought one recently (Morphy richards) can't remember the model number but it was 49 euro, steams well, has a pointy front bit for getting round buttons and the like and a shiny base to glide over things quickly. Thats all you need right? 8)

I was looking at theT M Lewin site the other day to buy shirts and I noticed a link for "How to iron a shirt" I pointed this out to my wife. As a result I now iron my shirts! Won't make that mistake again.

A PVD iron? Now that is hardcore.

I do my own ironing; I bought a steam generator one recently and my shirt creases are sharper than ever.

That looks like a cool piece of kit, alas I've just checked and it's not available on this side of the pond  - and I do my own ironing and have done ever since I was in the RAF - Mrs Bond is allowed to do it on occasion when I'm mowing the lawn or something, but the creases in my uniform shirts and trousers are not as sharp as when I do them, and I like my t-shirts folded in a particular way - and yes I am a little bit OCD when it comes to ironing  Plus it lets me escape for a few hours - put a DVD on, and just crack on through it :)

Although I do draw that line at Extreme Ironing

Anyone who has had to wear uniform does their own ironing, otherwise you end up with tramlines everywhere.

I remember ironing in hairspray and pritstick to get those creases razor sharp!

There was nothing girlie about the regiment flight sergeant that taught me to iron...I think he had quite a serious kill count and a row of medals for Ops as long as I've ever seen. :salute:

A line of soap in the crease of my PT vest also worked wonders.................. however, that didn't stop us looking like wallies running round in PT kit!

Never tried that. I remember being amazed when starting basic training at the random techniques to kit preparation. Couldn't believe it when an ex-knocker took a blow torch to my shoes to short-cut the bulling process. Works though! :D

Never mind steam irons and steam generators. Real men use steam rollers.

    pfft.

Real men have a separate smaller ironing board just for ironing shirt arms... and they've figured out how to iron arms without creases.

Ironing = perfect excuse to stand in front of the telly watching the football, rugby, cricket, cycling etc (delete as applicable).

I've always done my own ironing since about 14, several girlfriends and two wives and none can do it half as well. :blackeye:

REAL men are proficient at the following:

    Ironing
    Cooking/Baking
    Laundry (folding as well!)
    Cleaning
    Comforting the daughters

If you can't do ALL of the above, man-up!!

My wife has only ironed my trousers once: whether the tramlines were accidental or deliberate, I'll never know.

I've had three Philips Azure irons, I believe this is part of the same range. They were initially excellent, but I always forgot to de-scale them and they started dripping. I've now got a Bosch model recommended by Which, and I'm not too impressed.

With regards to being manly, I think ironing is a very manly pursuit. No woman is going to be concerned about how sharply shirts or trousers are pressed, as according to an old tailor I used to know, theirs should be pressed flat, without creases. And surely it's got to be more manly than kittens?

Well, I bought the iron in my original post last Thursday and must say it works like a charm... and it looks rather cool (which is ironic)

Hopefully won't have to buy another for a good few years as long as I remember to de-scale it occasionally.
